Can a microchip cause problems with the dog?

Something is wrong with Cherrie. Her head is shaking and she is wobbly. She is still trying to play with the others though.

She just had a microchip put in yesterday. She has always been healthy.
I just noticed I can feel the chip. It has moved quite a bit over from where the vet implanted it.

If the microchip is the problem what can you do about it?

They do migrate but should not be causing those symptoms.
Any vets open by you today?

Wish I could help, but don't have experience with microchips. Hopefully someone will be along shortly. Hope the lil one gets to feeling better.

No there isn't any open. I called the emergency vet and they said they couldn't say, I would have to talk to my regular vet. I called and left him and message and hopefully he will call me back soon.

Can it be a reaction to the anesthetic he used before injecting it? It just doesn't make sense.

He used a local?
Really shouldn't be that but can't say for sure.

No history of any shaking or wobbly symptoms?
Checked everywhere for pain?
Gums pink and moist?
Capillary refill time?
Pulse and respiration normal?

If it hasn't stopped, I think the ER is the right choice here. Wobbling concerns me. :(

Couldn't have gotten into anything abnormal?

ETA: is her head shaking as in shivering or is she shaking it like it itches?

The vet just called me back. He says he don't think it is from the chip or local.

We are thinking now that it may just be a hypoglycemic attack. I've been so busy this last day that I can't say for sure whether she has eaten. She has food down though.
I gave her some nutri drops so we will see if that helps.

How long before I should notice a difference if it was because of her blood sugar low?

Shaking like she is shivering.

I just put some food in front of her and she is trying to eat but the shaking is making it difficult for her.

If it's a hypoglycemic reaction, you should see improvement within a few minutes of giving nutrical.

Nutrical should start to bring her out of it quickly.

She is still shaking but not nearly as violently now. I gave her some nutri drops, some nutri cal and she ate a piece of chicken and wants more.

I just hope it stops all together soon.

Keep feeding her the chicken. If it was a hypoglycemic reaction she will need the protein to help stabilize the blood sugar and prevent a rebound crash.

you said wobbly head? Is this what you mean by shaking or is it like a bobble head type thing? If bobble head then i am concerned for AAI so i want to make sure this is not what is occuring?

and no microchip is not causing this as all of mine have microchips and have never heard this

update:

After eating a good meal Cherrie is her normal happy playful self. No more shaking or any other abnormalities. She perked up shortly after the nutrical and food so we are pretty sure it was just her blood sugar being low.

That's good news. Somebody needs to ring her dinner bell sometimes. ;)

How much does she weigh?

Yay. That's good news. Just keep an eye on her for another episode. Nutrical is good for emergencies, but they can have a rebound drop in blood sugar if it's used too frequently or without some slower burning protein to follow it up.

I forgot to ask you how old she is and what she weighs.

She is 17 weeks and just under 3lbs, she is just a little thing. She is eating good now. The vet thinks the anesthetic he used made her nauseated so she didn't want to eat. But her appetite is back to normal and she is eating good now!!

I just feel horrible that I wasn't more careful or observant. I should have noticed she wasn't eating. I feel like such a bad mommy and I am glad she is all better and back to her normal feisty self.

Unfortunately Cherrie is doing bad again and getting worse. She can't walk or barely stand but she is eating.
It looks as if it may be neurological.

According to another vet it looks like it may be one of two things. Some disease affecting her or the vet that put the microchip in, improperly placed the needle in causing nerve damage or damage to the spinal cord.
I just find it too much of a coincidence that Cherrie was a perfectly healthy happy puppy prior to the procedure done and less than 24 hours later she's developed serious problems.
At the time (I watched him do it) he mentioned something about the hub being off before implanting it. I didn't understand what he was talking about so I have no idea what it means.

They are running some tests on her tomorrow so we should have an idea in a couple days what is the problem.

If this is indeed from nerve damage or damage to the spinal cord, is there anything that can be done to help her? Will she ever be normal again?

I just feel sick over the whole thing. It's my fault for taking her in to get it done, she hasn't been the same ever since.

Please say a prayer for Cherrie that whatever she has is fixable and she will be alright.

DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF this could have happened without the microchip. You were trying to do a good thing.

You need to get her to a neurologist immediately - going to read the rest of your post and watch video

Please do not take her to a vet at this point get her to a NEUROLOGIST. I think you may be right if this happened after microchip and it affected the spinal cord. You thought you were doing the right thing it is not your fault. All three of my dogs have microchips and a ton on here do too so please do not blame yourself. Now you just need to get her the right help immediately

she may just need steroids to get inflamation down on spinal cord. This is definitely neurological unless she is having a reaction to the microchip which i highly doubt.

Did this vet not sedate your dog when doing this chip? I believe in dogs being sedated for this procedure so they do not move as my dd was done when under for her spay as this is painful also to do plus the dog is moving around :(

Did the vet do anything else like vaccinations that day?

This may just be a coincidence too that this symptom occured after the microchip so that is always a possibility as gme is a trigger from something that sets off the inflammation in the spinal cord.

I am so sorry about your baby. Hoping things get better for her real soon. Keep us updated. I would definitely take her some where else to be checked out.

oh the poor little thing. something is definitely not right and it is weird that it just started happening after the microchip was implanted. It is possible that something happened when he did the injection or it may not be related at all. a full cbc/chem panel should be done tomorrow as well as an x-ray of the thorax to start with. You may then need to be referred to an internal med specialist or a neurologist.

the "hub" is part of the syringe and needle. its that little space in between the actual needle and the measureable part of the syringe.

so by saying it was off he might have meant that the needle wasn't screwed on properly and he just had to tighten it. that happens with syringes that comes with needles, sometimes they are just not securely tightened so you always need to check that.

I will keep her in my prayers. I hope you can get her in to a neurologist tomorrow. Some Er vets have neurologists on duty.
