| Diarrhea! Fun! Hey guys! I have an 11 week old puppy that weighs 1.01 pound. He is having some diarrhea. Not 'watery' yet but very, very soft. Sorry for the graphics Anyway yesterday he was given some canned food. I was having a hard time getting him to eat so I was desperate. It was the same brand if that matters at all. He only had a small amount of it. Since then he has been gobbling down boiled chicken and rice with some of his kibble mixed in. He is playful, active, drinking his water, urinating......he does not look sick at all. He has only pooped 3 times today but each time was very loose. My question is when should I start to worry? I thought rice and chicken would help the pooping but it has not. I know that he is very, very small and I know bad things can happen very quickly in these little guys. I know its just probably the change in diet but how soon will this get better? He had a vet appointment yesterday and everything was great....just a mild case of ear mites Could ear mite meds cause diarrhea? I almost forgot...Sunday we had a terrible episode of hypoglycemia so I have been diligent about making him eat every 3 hours. Could I be over-feeding him? Could this be the cause of his loose stool? Whats funny is he has been gobbling up food ALL day it seems. I am just so happy that he wants to eat so I am letting him. Thanks for anyone's input! |

| Maybe talk to a doggy nutritionist. I dealt with loose stools when Precious was on canned food. I switched her to Halo dry kibble and it was the first food she loved.

| Soft stool can happen when you change their diet in any way. As long as it's temporary and it doesn't turn completely watery, don't worry too much. Now that you have him eating chicken, rice (both bland), and kibble, wean him off slowly to kibble only. It's easier to switch them over to foods slowly, as it avoids upset tummys. Also, poor quality foods, like what is sold at grocery stores also produce "poor quality" poop.

| Thank you! That makes me feel alot better. Now I only hope I haven't spoiled him with chicken! I did change his diet super-fast but I was just trying to keep him alive after that terrible episode. I will just keep a very, very close eye on him. Thank you for responding! |
