Also forgot to mention he gets a liquid skin formula with Omega fatty acids in his food to help his skin & coat internally. When this fungus crap is cleared up this will help him grow a beautiful coat. He will be a prince charming....
Foster Mommy to Chance:animal36 Thanks for all the support :thumbs up

You can purchase gloves from a medical supply store or even a pharmacy for a very minimal cost. They are sold in sizes and are much thinner then gloves that you us of house cleaning. It might make it a little easier to work with him and give meds if you were not also struggling with giant gloves ;) You are doing a great job....you rock! :D:thumbup:

Thanks for the tip on the gloves but I actually have medical supply gloves for some of the work I do-sort of a medical testing however the problem is he has bitten me once-HARD! and he has nipped at me about 4/5 times now (including this morning) Had I had on thin gloves all I can say is MUCHO OUCHIE!:eek:It WAS an OUCH but the thick gloves prevented him from breaking skin.

He is just not feeling good and scared then wha-la if I bite or nip at her (meaning me) she will leave me alone. I am trying to figure out how to handle this....he does not want to come out of his large crate, if I try to take him out like this morning he nips at me...... He used to come out on his own into the small crate to be carried outside for potty. I can't even get him out to put a collar & leash on him..... Any suggestions?

How was the ringworm diagnosed? Is this saran wrap for that?

The crisco lubes the skin and the saran wrap helps keep the moisture in.

what about a crate that opens from the top so you can always be able to grab him without backing him into a corner so you can't reach him?

also a thick towel helps this way he can't get ya.

I thought about keeping a harness on him as well but i don't know if that will chaff his already irritated skin?

Actually it is not crazy. My son has really bad psoriasis and it has been recommended to him too. It actually is a pretty common treatment to use saran wrap to help keep the ointment or in this case Crisco on the skin. From a medical standpoint it would be like applying a tegaderm to the skin after a surgery. We also use tegaderm in the OR.

Rizzosmom~ my suggestion would be to get him out of the crate and put a harness and leash on him. When it is time to get him out of the crate for potty or treatment you can use a treat and gently guide him out. Just leave the harness and leash on him all the time. I use to do that with Pebbles when she was younger and in her cart. She was kind of a devil  I feel so bad for the poor guy. I'm sure that he doesn't like being forced the medicine and it probably tastes horrible. Hmmm i wonder if you could ask the pharmacy to add one of those flavors to it like they do for kids. Maybe they have chicken or liver flavor :p...........JK about the flavors but not about the idea. I also wonder if you could possibly mix it into canned food and give it to him that way? He might take it more readily?

Could you put a harness over the shirt to keep it from rubbing?

Poor baby he is not used to being handled and now you are doing all this to him. He wants to love you but you keep doing stuff to him he isn't sure of or doesn't like or isn't comfy. Hope he can stop whatever treatment is upsetting or hurting him soon.

Chance is really doing well!!

Just a quick update on Chance. I did rectify the nipping problem with a soft lead/leash that stays on all the time. That way I can guide him into his transport crate to go outside without him nipping at me...

I also decided that I was going to start mixing his medication in his food and not putting it directly in his mouth. I started that with great success. He is just a lot happier all the way around. He gets really excited when I come in and he even talks to me, wags his tail and greets me. Now that he knows that nothing is going to be "done" to him he has started to relax...

I ordered some Chlorophyll capsules to put in his food also to help deoderize his body from the inside so he won't smell so bad. It will help his immune system also.

He will be going to his first vet appt. this week for an exam and a start on baths or dips whatever we decide at this point to really get him well. He is really a sweetheart.........

When he goes to the vet and I have some help I will be getting an updated picture of Chance to post here.

I have been taking him for a walk twice a day now for about 4 days. He loves his walk. Since he has no crusty skin falling off with the spores I feel it its safe...I walk him on the side of the street however-not on the sidewalk. I walk him early in the morning or late when there is no traffic...and we live in a very quiet neighborhood.
I just can't wait to be able to hug and kiss him like all the babies here get lots of TLC.

He has got to feel better physically and mentally. He probably wonders how long he'll have it good though. He knows not everyone will take care of him. He probably hopes you are his forever mom.

Yep he prances all right:p All the scabby, scaly nasty crappy crud is sloughed off...thanks to the Crisco. He just looks like a bald dog. A happier bald dog:D but a BALD dog noneless. He just has some hair on his head.

Not being able to hug & kiss a dog is just so wrong...:(

chandracz 06-02-2010 11:06 AM

I cannot wait to see pics of him!!!!! :)

Chance will have to stay at the vets overnight tonight

Well Chance had his first vet appointment this afternoon. He was actually very good for the assistants and the vet. Told them he might nip at them but he was great.:p

He has been 14 days on the anti-fungal meds (still smells to high heaven). Vet was impressed on how good his skin & ears looked in spite of his extensive condition. Told him about the old Crisco treatment.

Flushing his ears with an anti-fungal of remaining deep fungus will require sedation. So he is going to get a few things done while he is under...his teeth cleaned, micro-chip, heartworm test, and his vaccinations.

He was not a happy camper when I left him :( but they said they would give him as much TLC as possible. Hopefully he will be very happy when mommy comes to get him tomorrow:D Will get a picture tomorrow at the vets.

I understand wanting to do alot while he's under to avoid stress, but is it wise to do so much at one time? Can his little body handle all that at once?

Rizzo's mom 06-05-2010 12:10 PM

All went well with Chance at the vet

I can really appreciate your concerns. The Vet felt confident that this is the best way to go after reading his previous report from Shelter Vet. Believe it or not Chance is pretty healthy in spite of his current skin condition. I felt confident with it.

Actually I am going to get him in a few hours. :pThey called last night and said he did great and is doing well this morning....

That's great to hear. I am so glad he did well and they were able to get everything done at once. What a little trooper. Can't wait to see how happy he is to see you when you pick him up.
