| Medications - VENT ok so I have been sold expired vet shampoos so now i check all food, meds and shampoos before leaving office Vet food with rat poop in it and learned this happens in dog food and human food. It was not hard to miss as purina ha is white like corn pops and the brown stuff had hairs sticking out of it. The vet returned it and they sent me coupons -GREAT. I am stuck with the food though due to health issues Ok but today topped it all. I went to pick up DD soloxine which she has been on for a few years and i called it in ahead of time so they had time to get it right and double check it. I get there and the bottle says one tablet twice daily so i thought the med was dosed down below the normal .1mg so i open bottle and nope it is still .1mg tablet. I asked her why it says 1 tablet twice daily when dd is 7lbs and on 1/3 of .1 mg twice daily. Chart says it that way too. OOPS a mistake. Ok I understand mistakes happen but with MEDICATION. What about the owners that do not check this stuff? Or the ones that are getting a new med for the first time? Please check medications and expiration on vet products and make sure to get the correct doseage from vet directly and double check the bottle to make sure it says the same thing What is scary is dh is taking care of the dogs this weekend so he would have read the bottle and gave what was on the bottle. I made a checklist for him and I made the tech print out a new label with the correct info. Last edited by dwerten; 05-13-2010 at 11:54 AM. |

| I had that happen recently at my new vet's office (I moved away from my wonderful vet two years ago.) I called and talked to some new receptionist and asked her to call in a refill for Lady's phenobarbital to Walgreens. She called in Daizepam by mistake! I didn't realize it until I got home and since it is a controlled substance, I couldn't take it back. I was out $14, but what if I didn't know the difference in the two medications?????? |

| whoa scary - yeah i always ask a couple pharmacists, vet, specialist, etc before doing anything now as i want to double triple check everything as this is scary I did not want to make a big deal and get them in trouble as they are all nice but i just walked out shaking my head thinking thank goodness i am a very detail oriented person and check everything now. I just do not want it to happen to someone who isn't so what do you do? Last edited by dwerten; 05-13-2010 at 12:07 PM. |

| It's really scary what the heck is going on. If something did happen to a pet due to wrong med's they would just say their sorry. Heck, my SIL's mother fell walking her Min-Pin, actually tripped over his leash while crossing the steet last Wed, was rushed to the hospital, x-ray's showed a broke knee cap. Her pain continued in the second knee and she went to an orthropedic to be checked, guess what? Her other knee cap was broken as well. She hobbled around on that bad knee for almost a week. What kind of hospital can't read x-ray's? I think this thread will open up lot's of scary stories regarding meds and health care for both pet's and humans. You have to double check everything. Thanks for the reminder. |

| Thanx for the reminder...and it happened to me a few weeks ago. I had to bring TJ in for Metro, and we were discussing all sorts of stuff for his IBD, I mentioned I was giving Probiotics and he went and got a box of Purina Probiotics and said the rep said it was really good, blah, blah...Anyway I love my Vet he is really really good, he said to give it a try and that it's pretty cheap for the box, blah, blah, blah...I didn't have the heart to turn him down (as I usually do), so I figured I would buy it and donate it...Got the bill, it was $19 for a box of 35 packets, so yeah it was sorta cheap... I get home, I open the box and it only has 5 packets in it. I look at the top lid (the box is black), but I could make out that someone wrote in pen on the lid....Hospital ...so he obviously "grabbed" the hospitals box and I stupidly didn't check, nor did the girls up front... The Vet is out of the way and I don't plan on using it anyway...so I guess I really did waste $19 |

oh and i have figured out on vet shampoos to ask for free samples from manufacture before buying it after 100's in vet shampoos for dd so now the manufacture sends me a whole bottle for free. The only one that does not is virbac I believe but others do to try their product. Also for meds, shampoos, etc i call the mfg as well and ask the dosing as well as side effects etc as they know more about their product than vet usually so i get both takes the vets and the mfg

they told me you cannot return shampoos but when i called mfg they said yes you can so i told them the mfg said you can and they returned my money to me. Of course this was after spending tons on shampoos i started getting smart about it all Meds they sadly will never return even if they make a mistake as i think by law they cannot for fear of tampering with meds

If I had not known what the pills should look like, and if I had simply followed the directions on the pill bottles, I would have gone home and taken enough pills to stop my heart.

| Thats terrible that happened!!!!!! Thanks for reminding us....it is so easy to put so much trust into, a vet, a Dr., even a pharmacy, cause when things get hectic and our babies are ill, you just want to get them started, and get them well.
