| any advice on ticks? just found a tick on my maggie and now I'm terrified, we decided to go to PA for the weekend and now I regret it... we are not even in the country side.. we are in the city part.. I just happened to pet her and I felt something almost by her ear.. I am so worried I think it was stuck in her hair cause I dont see any red mark left from it.. I threw that tick in the toilet and flushed several times after we burned it to death,,,, Im very worried cause she still needs two more shots.. any one else had this problem?

| Wow, we've never found a tick on our dogs. Are you using flea and tick prevention? Not to freak you out but a girl at work has a Pug and that dog is on monthly frontline plus AND has had the lyme vaccine and she has lyme disease! It's scary. You could always add in a natural remedy to repel flea and ticks. I think it was YORKIEDAZE who has a recipe, you might want to PM and ask her.

| I found a tick on my Mickey a week or so ago. It was so gross and I know how you feel! I just read something that said if the tick has been attached less than 36 hours you have a much better chance of not getting a tick borne disease. It is scary.... |

| I am not sure about when it safe to start using it but we've found a few ticks on ours. YUK! We live in what I call country suburbs and in an old wooded area and we have lots and lotsa deer. I found a very large tick the other day on Hot Rod and I and I had to get it out myself as hubby was at work! Ewww! I took a flea comb and slowly combed it out and smashed the bugger! ewwww! He had to have gotten on him during our walk because w usually check each time we com in from our walks. I shave their bodies down for the summer so this one was really easy to find.

| After talking to our vet he convinced me in our situation (we camp often and live in a rural area on several areas surrounded by forest) the benefits of having our new puppy on the lyme & lepto. shots. They have seen several cases in our local area. While I have read and noted to the vet that small dogs can sometimes have problems with this. He assured me that they take all the precautions to keep them safe and they only offer the shots after all other shots have been given. While every case is different and I'm sure not all dogs need these shots. I do think that its beneficial to consider them if you plan to have your pets in areas that ticks or wildlife may roam. Im not sure there are any dog friendly tick repellents. While the frontline type products do kill anything that may bite, that dose not protect from lyme decease overall. Again I do want to point out each dog is different, while city dogs may not need these shots, I strongly urge those who camp, walk trails, or frequent parks that have wildlife talk with their vet and weigh the benefits vs consequences. These shots are not your standard given shots but an option for most new puppies. My choices may not be the views of all small dog owners and I understand that. But I know my dogs will be subjected to these things and I felt it was the best choice for us. |
