Worried about Layla

She has been doing very well lately, and continues to be strong and stand up every once in awhile, although we haven't taken her to rehab in over a week now. We're training her to stay in her carrier in the backseat, because it's just not safe with her carrier on my lap if the airbag happens to go off. And now that it's winter here and roads are icy, I don't want to chance it. I've been ignoring her cries and she does quiet down eventually. We actually drove over 2 hours away this weekend and she was really good for the trip! Woohoo!

I also set up a new corner for her in our living room. We had a big blanket for her in the corner which was kind of an eyesore, so I brought down her old tent that she was never interested in. I lined it with a fleece blanket, put her food and water bowls inside, and her bed in a corner. Then I bought a cheap bath mat so she had something outside the door to grip the floor on her way to the area rug. She LOVES it! She sleeps in there all evening while we watch tv. She was never ever crated in her life, but since she went down and we've had her carrier and crate, I think her "den" instinct has really come out.

It's true! She's an inspiration. Besides, she's just so darn cute, too. It sounds like she loves her new room within a room. She just wants to be close to you. Doesn't want to be alone. Remember when she pulled herself all of the way to the back door? She just wanted to be with you. I'm glad she is doing well and is happy.

I knew this day might come but I think Layla may be having another disc flare-up. She is not acting like herself and I'm beside myself with worry. She just wants to lay there and she's trembling a little. We will let her rest for the night and see if she can see a specialist tomorrow if she's still not herself.

Oh, Lindsey! Are you sure it might not be something else like a tummy upset?
I'll say a special prayer for your lil Layla that she will be ok and you know my heart goes out to you. Let us know how she's doing. She has a world of people praying for her and you both.

I don't think so. She will not move her head sideways. She is trembling when she picks up her head. I am worried she's having cervical issues. I don't know, I'm sitting here bawling now. I need tomorrow to come faster. Thank you for the prayer

I can imagine how you feel. I've been through some scarey issues with some of my little one's in the past. Just try to keep her comfortable for tonight and please know that we are thinking of you all and sending prayers that she will be ok.

Thanks guys. We got Layla to eat some soft food this morning. If it's a cervical issue it will be too painful for her to eat solids. She was refusing her kibble last night. She still won't move her head to the right but she will move it further to the left. We're going to take her to the hospital when they open at 8, and I'll stay there with her until someone can see her.

Other than the trembles and inability to move her head, she is acting okay. She is interested in things and she's licking us. I hope she will be okay. She is my world.

Lindsey, I'm sending lots of prayers and hugs for both you and Layla. Try to stay positive - she's an amazingly strong little girl. Please give lots of extra lovins from me, and give us an update as soon as you can.

Thank you. I guess we've changed plans... Scott isn't feeling well so he's not going in to work all day so we'll just stay home until the hospital opens and call in and see what time they'll be able to see her. Layla will do better here with us than sitting in the lobby getting excited with every other animal and person walking by. I didn't sleep last night and I just feel numb this morning. I don't want to go through this again.

I knew it... a bulging disk in her neck. We had to go in as an emergency because they had no spots available for regular times, so we went as emergency. The vet saw us right away and saw Layla was painful to move her head to the right side but wanted to have Layla's surgeons look at her too since they are more familiar with her. We left for a couple of hours to get our mind off it. I got the call two hours later saying they had looked and they all agree it's another disc issue. She has a week of Metacam and 8 weeks of strict crate rest. If she moves anywhere, we carry her. Her food and water are elevated so she doesn't have to stretch her neck. We have to avoid ALL excitement, anything that will make her move her head quickly. Avoid letting her bark. Don't let her shake.

I know I need to be positive because she feeds off my energy but I am a mess. Why do we have to go through it again. I am crushed.

But at least the hospital felt bad for us... we had an emergency with a regular vet and surgeons and all they did was charge us for a regular check plus medication. They waived the emergency fee and everything. They are good to us there.
