Default General household medication for yorkies???

Hi all.
I don't know if there is a similar post/thread like this. I did a search and couldn't find one though.
I'm looking for information on general household medication for Yorkies. The ones you don't have to purchase from your local Vet and pay a arm and a leg for. My Yorkie seems to have a lot of problems with her stomach. What influences it i don't know but every time it passes on without a expensive visit to the vet. If anyone has a remedy for easing her discomfort please share. And in fact a list of all general information about all household medication which is not harmful of coarse are welcome.
Thank you

Default Only know two

There are only two tips I have to offer, for constipation we use Metamucil mixed with a little water and a 1/2 tsp poured over their food. The second one is 100% Pure Pumpkin in a can (NOT Pumpkin Pie Mix! just PLAIN Pumpkin) used for constipation or diarrhea. I'm sure others here will be much more helpful than me.

I'm not sure what kind of tummy problems she is having but....When my Harley was sick with Ulcers the vet had told me I could give him a teaspoon of Pepto Bismol if he acted like his tummy was bothering him. He was a big boy though at 12 pounds so I'm sure you would have to cut it down for the smaller Yorkies.

By stomach problems i mean that she seems to be constipated a lot and her stools sometimes is black and hard and not as it should be. She also struggles to pass a stool and i guess this is because she is constipated.
Where can i get "Pepto", a lot of people recommended and praised it but i don't know where to start looking. Can i buy it at a chemist. I'm in South Africa so i don't know if we have it here yet or at all.
Thanks for the responses, i appreciate it.

honestly i would NOT use pepto the new formula has aspirin in it and can cause problems

Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol®, Kaopectate®)

organic canned pumpkin is best but sounds like the food you are feeding is the problem if this is an on going thing so your little one may need a new diet

have you had fecal checked and blood work to make sure no health issues? I do annual blood work, fecal and urine for mine and my dog on steroids goes every 6 mos for blood work.

I agree with dwerten (she's very helpful) about the Pepto. My mom used to give her furkids Pepto years ago, but we don't give it anymore. Just worried what's in there that might cause more problems. I never knew there was aspirin in it

I just thought of something, I was always told pepto was for upset stomach and diarreah not for constipation? it is to help "bind" things up. If she is constipated, pepto will only make it worse and more uncomfortable. I personally wouldn't give it. But dewerten has a good question, what kind of diet are you feeding? If you give kibble maybe add some warm water. Do you have compounding pharmacies near you?

Post 8 on this thread might be helpful! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...g-dosages.html I think a vet check is always important, you don't know if it's something serious, like a bowel obstruction or pancreatitis. I think it's always good to have a good phone relationship with your vet and his staff, they don't want you running in for every little thing, and they can ask you specific questions, to see, if it's urgent. If you don't trust your vet enough for this, it may be time to find a new vet.

A black stool is a sign of internal bleeding. She really needs to be examined by a vet.

First of all thank you for all the replies.
Dwerten i think i should have the blood work done to see what they say. I'm feeding Lienkie Yorkie pellets from Royall Canine but she doesn't eat it just like that. She is a very very picky eater so i mix in some steamed chicken and ever other day mince or peaces of meat, which ever she didn't have the day before. During the day there is plenty of kibbles to eat but she doesn't seem to touch it during the day. Anyway thanks again for all the replies, appreciate it.

If she knows she is going to get boiled chicken or other foods, she is not going to eat the kibble.

I would cut out the chicken and meat ... especially the meat! Their tummies cannot handle this.

AND, I would stop free feeding her. Put her food down and give her 10 - 15 minutes to eat it, then pick the bowl up. Two or three feedings/day. She will eat when she gets hungry!

Thanks Ladyjane i will try this and see what she does. Do you think i should stop with the mixed food/chicken and just feed her the kibbles as is? She does'nt eat unless there is something nice mixed in though. I would so like her to get use to just the kibbles as it is contains all the nutrition that she needs for her health and coat and it will be much better on the teeth as well.

She does not eat because you give her what she wants. I have successfully stopped pups from this behavior many times. You just have to hang in and not freak if she does not eat at first! If you pick up the bowl and put it away .. she will get the message. I feed my pups twice/day and they know that is all of the food they will get, so they rarely turn their little noses up.

Once she realizes that is the only food you are going to give her, I am quite sure she will eat it.

Now, of course, you must keep an eye on her for hypoglycemia, but honestly, I have never had a healthy pup get that if they did not eat for a couple of days. I get rescues who sometimes do not eat for a couple of days without any problem. Some of them have lived on table food....and they learn to eat kibble!

Thanks for the advise. I think i will have to hang in there and put her on a strict diet of only kibble but still keep an eye on her. Thanks again.
