| ![]() I'd be interested to know what testing has been done and those results...ask your vet for copies of all test results for your own record. Bile acid test is simple and inexpensive. Good idea to start there, be sure to get a CMP/complete metabolic profile as well, this will include BUN/creat. The double set of teeth is an issue and may be causing some of the symptoms...but I doubt the vet will remove them without a blood work-up first. Hope this is something that can be easily fixed.

| ![]() Living Dust Mops (I like the name btw), this Vet is one that is a small town Vet (pop. 300-400). He see's horses and cows lots since we're out in "No Man's Land" here. But that is exactly why I brought my dog problems to this forum and so far I'm getting so much appreciated tips on what this could be. This Vet is treating her with 2 medications. One is Baytril (1/2 tablet (22mg) once daily) and the other is Prednisolone (1/4 tablet (5mg) twice daily). I'm not sure which works in which manner but I believe (but I'm not really sure) is that one is to fight infections (if it is her ear) and the other one is to fight inflammation if it is brain, ear, or whatever. "SO FAR" she seems to have some slight improvement since Wed. (20-25% better). Where the Vet and I left things when I saw him late Tuesday evening was that he felt it was brain but he was agreeable to try anything and this is why we were going with the possability it could be her inner ear. I think too that it could be a combination of things but at the moment, I'm thinking those crowding teeth "must" come out first! The antibiotics she's currently on will help "maybe" with a more speedy recovery after teeth extraction but those things need to be out no matter what (IMO). If it ends up being a problem in her brain.......it will be well worth the effert (IMO again). But this is where I'm at with things at the moment. It's 5:30 AM and I can't wait for these Vets offices to open today (Sat.). Might not be able to get her in until Mon. but I'm after the "quickest" appointment I can get and NOT with this Vet here (different one) that charged my 4X's what the Farm Vet charges and she was "supposedly" specialized in cats and dogs but removed adult teeth (6) from my male! Don't trust your Vet or your own doctor EVER at 100%. Always get different opinions! PR |

| ![]() the baytril is the big gun antibiotic and the prednisolone is a steroid and is the anti-inflammatory. I think the vet is right to think neurological ![]() |

| ![]() I'm at awww that the Vet never even suggested doing any lab work when I had her there. Maybe he thought it wasn't worth the trouble and expense. Dunno why he didn't bring it up and to be truthful, I didn't think of it either. I did phone and get her an appointment (Wed.) for her teeth. She is slowly improving day by day. Today she is still lopsided but more frisky and not as sensitive to touch (like before). I think maybe I should phone on Monday and see if he would run her labs and take another look at her to see for himself on how much better she is doing. He did look at her pupils though and he told me they were fine. Not that uneven pupils needs to always be present to diagnose brain issues. I do think you're right and labs should be done. I'll ask if they wouldn't mind doing the bile acid check too. I almost had to beg them to get her in for her teeth on Wednesday though. Seems their schedule is just jammed. Six-seven Vets in this group and it's harder than heck to get in, lol. I'll definately give it a try though! Peggy |

Good luck again !! The Baytril prescribed is for the ears. IF it is an inner ear infection - I'm surprised he didn't give you the Ear Drop form of Baytril along with the pills. The Prednisolone is an active steriod and can be a wonder drug ...I'm not sure if I'm correct here or not but I THINK it's a form of prednisone which has alot of adverse side effects - so you have to be really careful with dosage etc... for your sake - I Really hope it's an inner ear infection....and you're smart to get other opinions !

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() I would definitely insist on blood work being done before having her put under for any reason. Hoping she continues to improve.

| ![]() I have a little girl, she was born in March 09, perfectly healthy but tiny. She was about 3 months old when she spent the whole day with my vet having bloodwork and liver panel done. I had someone who wanted her and I wanted to make sure she was perfect. All test came back perfect! (I ended up keeping her) when she was about 5 months old she began to stagger, she was very tiny and I thought that was why. a few weeks later she couldn't walk, she tried and she would fall over, we rushed her to the hospital where she stayed for three days, they ran all the test they could think of and all were normal. We brought her home and she eventually was able to walk again, still with a stagger (like an inner ear problem) but she is doing well. The vet felt is was a genetic abnormality some where in the lines. |

laci32 - your're right about the teeth issues - the double rows are a breeding ground for bacteria peggynitro....all the best when you go back to the vet - I really hope you get some answers - this has to be so upsetting and not knowing why makes it all even worse ....

| ![]() Hi Peggy -- please push for liver shunt testing if you haven't done so already. The Bile Acid Test usually only costs about $100 bucks and it is very informative in determining whether the liver may be the issue. Liver shunt is VERY had to diagnose, because some dogs have very severe symptoms and some have virtually none. My lhasapoo just had his liver shunt surgery at AMC in NYC (11/10/09) and thankfully, he's doing great post-op with no complications! But he didn't get dignosed until 2 1/2 and he had virtually NO SYMPTOMS -- Not just "some" of the symptoms listed...he had NONE!! I had to fight and push and demand my Vet to do more testing, because she said I was over-reacting about him being too tired. That's why I brought him in...his pee was too dark and he was always sleepy. Since he had no severe, clear-cut liver shunt symptoms, they refused to believe that was the problem. Well, a couple blood tests, bile acid tests and ultrasounds later, voila! Liver shunt was clear as day and we instantly started prepping our little man with the food and supplements needed to get his liver strong and ready to endure surgery. Vets know VERY little about liver issue (scary, but I've learned very true) and sometimes, you just have to demand to have things done to get answers. Best of luck with this! It's not easy....but my little man is now healthy and happy and while we have used TONS of Care Credit credit cards to pay for all our testing and everything else, he's our baby and we realize now we would've paid 10 times as much, and eaten Campbell's soup for the next 5 years if we had to, in order to afford his Vet bills....
