Infection 1.5 months post-neuter??

We're back from the Vet and luckily it's not bad. Apparently what happened is that his internal stitches didn't dissolve like they should have and he started to have a slight reaction. The Vet said that if it does occur, then it usually does around 1.5 - 2 months post-op, and this is right around that time for him. The entire morning before his appointment I had been holding him to keep him from licking and also gently washing the area with cool water every hour or so to keep it clean and help the swelling go down. It did start looking better and she said I did a good job.

She said no medication is needed, but if I feel necessary I can apply Neosporin. I was told it should heal on it's own and within 1-2 weeks at the most. He's wearing an E-collar for now and sound asleep thankfully so I can also catch up on sleep I didn't get last night! Again, thank you so much everyone!!

Yep, that is what I was saying last night. I have had it happen. It is usually only a tiny spot....I was not thinking that he probably made it larger by licking.

I am SO glad he is better.

Yep...you can both sleep tonight! He is SO cute! A little yorkie lamp.

oh good. i'm glad its not serious and will heal on its own.
poor little guy is exhausted he doesn't even mind the e-collar

This is why I love this site!!!! I am having this same type of reaction with Reesie's neuter incision and it's exactly what someone explained, a small little area, with a small cut on it. Im taking him in tomorrow to the vet anyway, but so glad I found this thread as I was worried!!!!!

Hi Vivian,

I'm so sorry your little guy is going through this also, but just to put your mind at ease, within a few days JoJo's incision site looked much better and ultimately it healed beautifully. I kept the e-collar on him for about a week to keep him from licking it and gently washed the area with only cool water, followed by a generous application of Neosporin, twice a day. It was probably overkill, but I tend to be very overprotective of my baby (aren't we all? ) It's been about a year and a half now since then and it's practically invisible now, and there were no long-term effects of his infection.

I'll be praying that Reesie recovers as well as JoJo did.

This SAME Thing happened to Riley... It was about 1 - 1 1/2 months after his neuter... suddenly he started licking his incision area and messing with it. When I took him in for a nail trim I asked if they would look at his incision........... Sure enough, they said that his internal dissolvable stitches had not dissolved like they were supposed to and his body was having a reaction and trying to push them out. They just pulled what was there out and he healed up immediately, after that.
