They took their dog to a vet. hospital....They had the pre blood work done to make sure everything was fine and then she went in for the surgery. The doctor was quite experienced with the procedure, and the owners felt assured he was competent to proceed. The owners where still soooo scared for her......The biggest worry was for the anesthesia, but it was all over in about an hour........

Every time our babies have to have any kind of procedure done it is so frightening for the owners and its certainly understandable.....Just be prepared to worry, that's what moms do best.....;)..... May Daisy have a speedy recovery......

I am so sorry to hear your baby brokie her leg.

My Brownie broke his back leg a few months ago. He had to have a pin put in for awhile and then they removed it once the bones were healed. The surgery went well although his leg looked pretty nasty afterward. He had pain meds for a week and I am so glad they did this because I know he was hurting. Today is his last day of being confined and we couldn't be happier!!

The good news is that a plate is better for her to have in a way. She can actually move around more than if she had a pin put in. The plate is screwed in so there isn't much chance of it moving. It will be uncomfortable for her and she probably won't want to use the leg for a little while but her recovery time will be much faster.

The only thing I can't remember is whether the plate is permanent or able to be removed. We talked about it with the vet and I do remember him saying something about how cold and hot weather would affect it. You might want to ask your vet about it being permanent or not, I'm pretty sure it is permanent though. Since it is screwed in there you would think they it is permanent as they would have to go in and unscrew it to remove it which would be another painful surgery.

I think it could be permanent, we'll find out tomorrow when we go and see her. Shes not having the surgery until friday so she'll have to go through all tomorrow with it :(

so sorry your baby got hurt! I know how upsetting it is when they get hurt. Daisy dislocated her knee last summer and we both were a wreck. They put her out and reset it and she was in a sling for a couple weeks and no stairs for a month. That was hard carrying a 20 lb dog up and down stairs and I have a bad knee two torn ligaments. We survived though and she is doing fine!

I have a foster who had surgery for a fractured leg. It was an old fracture (six months) and so it was a bit more complicated. He ended up needing a bone graft and then an IM pin in the bone and a plate and 8 screws.
He has been on crate rest for almost two months now. The past couple of weeks I have been able to let him walk more and he is doing very well!
If his leg had been properly done the first time, he would have been well in less time.

I am so sure Daisy will do really well! You will not even be able to tell that there is a plate in that leg. And, they really are amazing in the way they recover.

Keep us posted! I will say a prayer for her.

My Tarra was 14 weeks old and shattered her elbow and had to have surgery, only bad thing for us was she had to be in a kennel for 9 weeks, which we did and she is almost 2 and great no limp or anything.

My Bluebelle broke her elbow when she was a small pup, just fell down a little step in the garden. She has a pin and a screw in her leg and was out of hospital in 3 days and walking, but confined to crate. After 2 weeks we had an xray done and the bones was completely healed in one direction (to the point you could no longer see the break) and the other was healed but not completely.
Others are not so lucky, but the outcome on small dogs with good rest tends to be very good.
At some point the metalwork may need to come out, but not so far.

Just been to see Daisy and she is doing ok. She is on painkillers which is helped her with the pain and she is quite drowsey. They gave us the option of either amputating the leg if we couldnt afford the surgery or go ahead with the surgery tomorrow. We obviously chose to continue with the surgery tomorrow, regardless of the price!

Ill write back here tomorrow after I find out how the surgery went.
