I have a 4 yr old male yorkie. For the past 6 days I haven't been able to get him to eat. I've been feeding him chicken soup, beef broth with mashed up rice and some smoked trout broth all with a little maple syrup. He drinks water and goes pee but other than that just sleeps and is listless. I have to force feed him with an eye dropper. I fed him a couple of hot dogs about 10 days ago could that be the problem. I know I should take him to the vet but I don't have the money. Is there anything I can do to get him to eat solid food? Help!

No one can empathize with you more than me on not having money for a vet visit, but if your dog hasn't eaten solid food in a week and is listless, you have to take him. Has he had a bowel movement? I rarely suggest vet visits, but this would worry me.

I haven't seen him do anything in 6 days.

I don't mean to sound harsh but you really need to get you dog to the vet. Six days without food or water?? Please, take him in asap. If you don't have the money you need to find it, your dog could be dying. If you can't get a credit card, care credit or a loan, please turn him over to a rescue. He cannot survive much longer than this without proper medical care.

If you look at the top of this section that you posted your thread in you will find a Sticky that has some suggestions on how to deal with unexpected vet bills.

On that note.....I strongly recommend that you take your baby to a vet. You very well could lose him if you don't. That would be devastating, I'm sure.

Thanks for the help and support guys, I'm going to take him down to the animal shelter this morning. I think they have some type of free emergency program.

Good for you! I'm sure someone will be willing to help you & your poor baby. There's a definite problem if he won't eat. Keep us posted please.

What ever you do, please DO NOT turn him into the Animal Shelter.

If he is really sick and you can not afford his care, Please search for a Reputable Yorkie Rescue in your area - there are lots of them that will take care of him, and even a Small Breed Rescue would too.

Well I tried but they can't see him for 2 weeks, so I took him to the Vet. They said he might have some blockage like from chewing things but he doesn't do that, then we figured out it's probably some trout skin (I) gave him a few days before. They weren't positive without x-rays which I can't afford. They said he needs surgery $ 1900 or he'll probably have to be put down. They gave him a fluid Tx-SQ-Initial and parvo test and gave me some Doxycycline, Carafate and Cerenia. He did have the runs a little yesterday which is the first time in a week that he's done anything. When I let him outside I have to watch him or he tries to dig a hole somewhere to hide. I can't find any oganizations around here that I can ask for help. Is there some way I could (roto rooter) him. I'll just have to keep feeding him with an eye droper and the medicine and see if anything changes. I hope that skin I fed him will eventually pass. I sure can't afford the surgery. I'm not giving up.

I am so glad you took him to the Vet. Please don't let this go for much longer, bc if he has a blockage he could die. He is only 4 years old and he doesn't deserve to die, not when he can easily be fixed.

Do you have a Credit Card or family to lend you money? Have you tried to apply for Care Credit???

And last, please if you can not afford to help him get better, and IF he doesn't get better today (I would not let this go on any further than today), then please start to contact Reputable Yorkie or Small Breed Rescues and ask if you can surrender him, as they have donation funds and they will not let him suffer, they will get him into Vet care asap.

I consider this a life and death situation. Since you cant afford his care please consider surrendering him to a rescue before its too late. It is the responsible thing to do and he is counting on you to make good decisions regarding his care

I agree with Chachi completely. He needs immediate care. Please, give him to a rescue - they can help him get the medical attention he needs. He's depending on you to do the right thing for him.

Please, please don't attempt to treat any type of intestinal blockage yourself. You obviously want to help your pet.....thank goodness you were able to take him to the vet. You have reached the point at which the problem will only be resolved with additional professional care.

This has gone on too long for the 'wait and see' approach; you have already done this. I was happy to hear you say you are not giving up, and hope this means you are exploring finance options for that x-ray as we speak.

Please review the advice given by YT members and do whatever you need to do to help your pet. No one wants to see someone they love suffer.......

Draggon_9 - my heart is breaking for you. I have the feeling that you really love your little guy and are feeling a bit lost and hopeless. The truest and most unselfish form of love is to be willing do what is in the best interest of those you love even if that means letting go. In your situation, if you cannot afford xrays and/or surgery, it would mean surrendering your beloved to a rescue that has the resources to treat him.

Please put aside your feelings and do what is best for your Yorkie.

Yes, we can all see that you love this little one. But please take it that one step further and take your little one to a rescue if you absolutely are not able to afford his care. He's been suffering and now you understand the extent of his medical issues. Please, please do not let this go on for the the sake of the dog. He can be treated and recover from this. Please let the love you have for him come thru do right by him. You can on here to find out what can be done, please take the advice that has been given.

When my girl was not eating because of burns in her mouth, we fed her with a eye dropper as well.

What we did was water and pedialyte. Every couple hours we would do that as well as a little chamomile tea no sugar of course. I would even put a little NUTRICAL in water and let it melt a bit and give her that. She was fed like this for one week. The vet said she couldn't eat food. She never pooped either because there was NOTHING to poop out. Yo usay you are feeding him broths which is why he probably has went.

I know the best is to try chicken and rice which is what I would of tried to get him to eat.

But if he has not ate in a week I wouldn't suggest that. I know after our week of no food we were to SLOWLY give her a little bit of meat baby food by syringe and slowly give it to her thicker.

My vet didn't want to believe that she would survive and I like you didn't have lots of money, the meds and visits were alot for me at the time but we brought her home anyways and my mom cared for her how I mentioned above. She survived and was eating regular food within two-three weeks.

If they do suspect a blockage I would probably turn him over to a rescue which can give him a chance at life.

My heArt is breaking All over again as I read this. This summer (7/31) I lost my 5 1/2 year old perfectly healthy boy to a reaction from flea medication. I DID have the money to treat him and it didn't matter to me how much it cost, I wanted him fixed no matter what. But sadly, they could not save him. I had no choice in the matter. And no amount of money could fix him. YOU do have a choice. Your baby can be fixed and a 4 year old deserves that choice. I pray that you can somehow find the funding right awY to fix him or do the unthinkable but right thing for him And turn him over to someone who can assure him a healthy happy life thAt he so deserves. I would have gladly given Sunnie to the man in the moon if it meant he would be alive.

You should never feed such a little one hot dogs, trout skin or any fatty foods.they very sensitive stomachs. if hes gone that long with out food please find some way to get the money and get him the help he needs. I know everyone has trouble with money from time to time. with the economy the way it is many are having money problems. BUT you cant keep letting him suffer or he will die.
use a syringe and get some pedialyte into him, nitre cal too. I cant see how a vet can tel you he needs surgery with out even doing test or x rays on him. and be able to come of with a total amount of the cost. when he hasn't tested him yet. But he does need help. sign up for the credit care TLC posted the link, if not borrow the money from some one before its to late for your little one. boil him some chicken and offer him small bites. they have a can food at the vets that will help him get energy faster. but it wont help with what ever problem that hes having. please get him to a vet for help ASAP.

If he is digging hole to hide, he is looking for a place to die. Please rturn him over to anyone. Do not let him die.

I'm not sure if he's looking for a place to die, this is probably what they do when in a great deal of pain. They are trying to find protection because they know they can't fight off a predator.

Does anyone know if this could be pancreatitis? She said something about giving it trout skin, could that be high in fat? If it is pancreatitis, doesn't a Pepcid pill help? To the OP, when Joey was sick his vet said I could give him 1/4 of a 10 mg pill of Pepcid. They also sell Pepcid in 20 mg, however get the 10mg and give 1/4 of the 10 mg pill for a 5 pound Yorkie. At least it won't hurt him.

I was thinking the same thing, she also gave him a couple of hot dogs. He might not have an appetite bc he doesn't feel good.
Why did the vet diagnose his condition as a blockage? Is he vomitting? Runny stools? Any updates?

This is one of those threads that I don't like to revisit but at least there is a little bit of hope with this one that the baby can possibly be saved.

To the OP, please let us know how your little one is doing. Has he gotten any better at all? Is is possible for you to find the money from friends, relatives to get this little one treated? Have you thought more about surrendering him to a rescue? He needs you to make the hardest decision you have to make, for his sake. Please don't let this little one suffer any longer. it is not fair to him, he has a chance, please don't let him die simply because of money or pride. He is one of God's living creatures and he deserves a fighting chance. I hope you will do the right thing for this little one before it is too late.

You guys can stop now, I get the point. He's BETTER! A couple of days ago he past something a couple of times that didn't look good. Since then a almost complete turn around. This morning he was back to barking and chasing squirrels. I'm still having a little trouble getting him to eat solid food. Now I have to make him take it easy so he doesn't over do it. He's lost a little weight but I think he'll be fine.
