My baby had LS suurgery in March at University of TN. She is doing great! A great souce of information is - Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support I have had so many questions, both before and after her surgery, and there is always someone available on there with an answer. They will most likely know about the Dr. / animal hospital you are asking about. Good luck! It's the best think we ever did for our baby. ~~~ Valerie

Dr. Tobias/UofT is a leading vet in the research of LS and has done hundreds of the surgery. Another factor is their costs are so much lower than many of the other places that even with airfare and hotel it is much, much less expensive.

We had a wonderful experience with Dr Tobias and it was half as much to have it done there compared to having it done anywhere close to home (Houston, TX). I cannot say enough wonderful things about UT! ~~~ Valerie

My mother posted the original question about UPenn. Our baby did have surgery there on Wednesday. I can't say enough good things. He isn't home yet, and he isn't out of the woods, but so far so good. Thank you for the quick advice and responses. We had to go with our gut feelings and do what was best. Hathaway had a very large congenital shunt that was quite difficult to get to. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. It's a long bumpy road but worth it to save his life.

| That is great news and please keep us updated on how your little one is doing. It will also be great to hear about this surgeon/U Penn. It will be wonderful if members can recommend them also. Has your mother contacted the breeder? If yes are they helping?

Our surgeon was Dr. Mike Schlicksup. And he has been absolutely wonderful. I would recommend him in a heartbeat! Hathaway should come home tomorrow. Of course we will have follow-up visits to re-test bile acids and what not. I have been in touch with my breeder and I am getting a full refund for Hathaway. I've already received half. I am very appreciative, but at the same time his surgery was $6500. I only paid $800 for Hathaway. With all of the testing before hand, I'm close to $10,000 already. I just want to mention too that my regular vet thought I was a "nut case." I was in her office at least once a month since I brought Hathaway home last Easter. I just knew something was wrong. He wasn't a normal puppy in my opinion. I went with my gut, purchased pet insurance and took him to UPenn. Since my regular vet thought I was a hypochondriac there was nothing in Hathaway's chart about a possible shunt. This was not considered by the insurance a "pre-existing" condition. (Even though mother's instinct let me know when he was 12wks old.) Pet Plan insurance covers all hereditary and congenital conditions that are not pre-existing. It is definitely the company I would recommend as well. Depending on your plan (I purchased the highest threshold) they cover 100% at your regular vet and 70% at a specialist or university hospital. And I only have a $50 deductible. As long as there is no break in coverage, he is covered for life.
