Holly has GIARDIA? I have had Holly for 2.5 months and have tested her poop 4 times and has come back positive for giardia. I am so confused because she does not have any symptoms of having this. The vet has given her medication 3 times 2ml twice a day for two days and have to get her tested in 3 wks. I have read about giardia in books and online and that does not sound right. I dont know if he is just trying to take my money or there is something wrong with Holly. Should I take her to a different vet? Please help!!!! |
Hmmm I really do not think that two days of meds is enough at all plus three times a day? I am not sure what meds they gave for it, but it doesn't sound like the way I would go. |
What medication did the vet give you? |
The vet gave me .3 ml of Albendazole liquid 2 times daily for two days. I need to retest her tomorrow but I dont know if I should take her to that same vet or change to a different vet. |
You could call and ask another vet what they would prescribe. Everything that I have read about giardia, and I have read a lot about it, says that it is very hard to detect because it only shows up in the stool at one stage of development. Normal treatment for giardia is treat with panacur for 5 days, then wait 10 days and treat for another 3 days. If he is using Flaygl it could be different. There is another thread going about coccidia and if vets just diagnose parasites to get the money. |
I think the treatment is in no way going to get rid of it. Did he tell you that you must clean like crazy? That one cyst can reinfect? I think I would try to find another dr. Yup when Peanut had Giardia he took Metronidazole (Flagyl) too |
Personally, I don't think vets are in it for the money, that's a lot of schooling, and they see so much heartbreak, I think vets are one of our unsung heroes. There are exceptions to every rule, but I think this is very rare indeed. Regarding treatment for Giardia, this site explains that while Flagyl takes ten days of treatment, however a newer drug, Panacur, takes only two to three days. Flagyl has much more serious side effects, while Panacur is safe even on puppies as young as 6 weeks, and will also treat roundworm, hookworm and whipworm. So if this is what you vet has given your dog, I would feel very confident. Also, remember that part of his choice was made because your dog is symptom free. Quote:

I made her a potty that when she goes pee an d poop everything goes to the pad and does not touch her feet and still I wipe her feet and bottom with wipes. If that is not clean I dontknow what is. I have been giving her pineapple so just in case she goes potty and I dont catch it on time or it does not drop into the doggie pad she will not eat it I knw she does not eat her poop but you never know if at some point she will pick it up. I wash her bed and toys every day. |

After a lot of reading I've learned that many dogs have giardia but it is inactive until the dog comes under stress and then it can take off. But unless it is active it cannot be detected in the stool. In fact it can only be detected in the stool in just one stage of it's life. So I cannot understand how they can find girardia in the stool of a dog that is not showing symptoms of it. Now this is just the conclusions that I have drawn.. If someone has more information I am eager to learn. |
Yes, I cant wait to get more info. So far I will be going to another vet to get a second opinion. |
I have always thought that even a carrier can shed cysts in their feces....just in smaller amounts; and that can be detected in samples. I might be wrong. If I think of it tomorrow, I will call my vet and ask. Testing is difficult even in a case that is full blown. |

I have partial information. The tech I spoke with this morning asked one of the vets about this and he said that it all depends on what kind of test the vet is doing. If they are doing an on the spot test (Elisa), then they are looking for antibodies. So...if a dog had giardia, that test would not be the one to use if it were recent since the dog would understandably have antibodies. If your vet is doing the test right there and giving you immediate results....that may be the problem. He said they should not do the Elisa for about a year after treatment! What the tech forgot to ask the vet is whether a dog who is a carrier would also test positive...I am thinking they would; but will let you know when they call me back later on. I was there a couple of hours ago, but it was too busy to find out from the vet. |
:rose:Thanks for the info. I went to another vet the is great! I will have the results tomorrow or Monday but if it comes back pos. she will be getting Panacur not the same as she was getting. The vet said she looks fine she does not look like a puppy with giardia because most of them look tired because of the weight they loose. So I will let you know when they call me. Thanks Friend |

I have read that cleaning with amonia is better than with bleach. I'm not sure why you are bathing the puppy so much. |

sorry for the confusion; my second and third link suggests the use of DE as a parasite killer when ingested. however your first instinct to use bleach is probably the most effective Giardia ENVIRONMENTAL DECONTAMINATION The most readily available effective disinfectant is probably bleach diluted 1:32 in water which required less than one minute of contact to kill Giardia cysts in one study. Organic matter such as dirt or stool is protective to the cyst so on a concrete surface basic cleaning should be effected prior to disinfection. Animals should be thoroughly bathed before being reintroduced into a “clean” area. |
