My Sick Little Mitsy. Please Help! My yorkie.. the love of my life. was perfect 5 days ago. her normal self. 4 days ago she kept me up all night with a cough. the vet called it a collapsing trachea. we got antibiotics and a pill to help her relax. she only took 1/4 of the pill and her cough was completely gone. the next day she was still tired. not wanting to walk. and hid in a strange place. she wouldnt eat. we took her back into the vet and they gave her more antibiotics and fluids. they didnt seem to help at all. she was still vomiting. not moving much. just sleeping. and refused any food. she continued hiding in strange places when she could and wasnt herself! it has been the hardest days of my life. for the past two days she has been going to the vet all day. and has gotten an iv. which gives her fluids and nutrients because of the weight she has lost in just 4 days. they dont know what is wrong. they suspect pancreatitis or a few other options. does anyone else have a similar problem! i need help.. i cannot lose her... she means everything to me! please any advice. anything! thank you so much. -Mariel and Mitsy |
O I am so sorry, it must be awful! sending up some prayers for you lil one.. |
Please help quickly! please Please help me guys! any advice or anything would help! little mitsy needs help:( i love her soooo much! |
Did her cough sound like any of these on this thread? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...d-trachea.html What bloodwork have they done? Have the tested for liver shunt? |
the vet said it was the collapsing trachea. but that has stopped since the first day. but yes she has gotten blood work done everyday and her liver enzymes are high and today they said she is yellow colored. she did mention the liver shunt. but seemed to dismiss that problem today. it so hard not knowing what is it! she is at the vet currently on an iv and will stay there overnight also.. |
Why did the vet dismiss the liver shunt? Do you have the bloodwork results? If not, can you call and get them to post here? Did they do a BAT (bile acids test) test? If not, please insist they do one and post those results here, too. There are some very knowledgable people here on YT and I'm hoping one will see this thread soon who will be able to help you more. In the meantime, please post those test results. |
I am so sorry your little Mitsy is so sick. I would get her to a specialist, like an internest. Usually they are at 24 hour animal hospitals or go to a University teaching animal clinic. Sounds like your vet isn't sure what it is and you don't want to wait to find out. Keep us posted please and I will keep her in my prayers. |

How is Mitsy this morning? |
Just checking in on Misty. I hope today brings some much needed answers. |
With the high enzymes and jaundice, it almost has to be a liver problem. She needs to see a veterinary internist today. The vet can't rule out liver shunt without a bile acids test. |

The specialist is a great idea. I agree with Ellie May, that this sounds Liver related. Try not to freak out, you have to be strong for your baby. IF she has a Liver Shunt, or MVD or Liver Disease, please know this isn't a death sentence, with proper treatment, diet and supplements she can live a happy life :) We are here for you, and may of us have Liver Issue Babies (including me ;)) Just be sure to post what the Specialist has to say, and any more teset results. Bring a pad and pen with you to write it all down ;) |
Will keep Misty in my thoughts and prayer's. I hope the new vet can determine what's wrong before it's too late. Your right to be so nervous I would be also. Hugs to both of you, poor baby, if they could only talk. |
Mariel, I'm so glad you were able to post her test results here. Ellie May and TLC are the two members I was really hoping would see your posts. I've been impressed by their knowledge many, many times. I will keep praying for Mitsy and check back in for updates. Oh, I don't remember seeing how old she is? |
I'm glad to hear that you're seeing a specialist. I hope you get the answers you seek soon and little Misty can begin her recovery. |
Thank you all so much! actually we are driving to iowa tomorrow to go get her help. so were doing everything we can! but she is only 4 years old.. still such a baby! but i know in my heart that this cannot be the end of her long life ahead! |

Aww, she is just a baby still. Please be sure to let us know how tomorrow's visit goes! |
Bless your hearts. I will be praying for your little Misty. Please try to keep us posted. |
Saying prayers for you and little Misty. She has a very good mama taking care of her!:) |
Iowa Hey everyone! We are currently in Iowa. They believe that she has leptospirosis. They gave us the option to put her down or have her continue there and they would help her but it would cost 5,000 dollars to keep her there for a week. We chose to have then help her. I'm actually 16. And thank god my parents care enough about her! I'm so greatful! But they asked us if she were to go into cardiac arrest if they should resusitate her. My mom said no. Let her go peacefully. Is there a big chance that could happen with why she has? |
Oh no!! Poor girl. I'm so glad they think she's treatable, though. A lot of people on here will not vaccinate their pets for this because of the dangers of the vaccine, but I wonder it they know the cost of treatment is so high? I don't know anything about this illness, but I will keep her in my prayers! Please be sure to come back with updates, ok? |
Oh no I am so sorry. You and your parents are wonderful to go with the treatment option. I am just wondering if she is stable enough to treat at your regular vet now that it is known what is wrong. Just thought if possible it would save a little money. I will keep you all in my prayers. Thanks for updating. |
Oh honey I'm sorry she's so sick but glad to hear there's still a chance for survival with treatment. So many don't give the Lepto shot but look at what can happen? I will keep your baby in my prayer's for her to be strong and come threw this ordeal. Your parent's are wonderful people to give her a chance. God Bless all of you. |
Bless you and your parents for going the distance for little Misty. I will continue to pray that she recovers completely. I struggled with whether to give this vaccination to my 2 babies (my previous vet didn't give it). After reading your post, I am so thankful I listened to my new vet and did have both dogs vaccinated. Please know that we're sending warm hugs and hope for you all.:hearts-xx |
Aww, I'm so sorry to hear this. Bless your parents for giving her this chance. That's a really hard decision. Our thoughts are with you and Misty. Big hugs. |
chester and I are sending prayers your way, I hope she gets better, she is very lucky to have you and your parents to do this for her, good luck |
I'm so glad you went to a specialist. At least you are doing all you can. Many blessings to your parents for being willing to help your baby. Please know that you and Misty will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs. ~Joanne~ |
