My 7 month old yorkie has 2 rows of teeth

I called the Vet yesterday and she was out so I spoke with the "other" vet on call. I asked him about the acid bile test and he looked at Hootie's chart and told me that his protein level was just slightly low and that they wanted to keep him on this (Amoxicillin) for a week then to bring him back unless he exhibited unusual symptoms. Part of the vet's instructions was to "Force Feed" him at least 2 times a day if he wouldn't eat on his own. They even provided the large syringe to feed him with. I was also to keep a diary and bring it with me on my return trip. I was to "look" for symptoms such as, him banging his head into objects (walls, etc), inability to walk straight or to be walking in circles, glazed eyes, extreme weakness, whining, basically anything that looks like a neurologic problems especially within an hour after eating. I am VERY happy to report that SO FAR, he is doing great. I have had to force feed him 2 x's yesterday then gave him his Amoxicillin and he has literally been bouncing off the walls. No sign of any of the things I was to be looking for. He has been VERY playful, running through the house and growling and barking. This morning he woke up and jumped in my face, licking me all over (yes...he sleeps with me...LOL). He went into the kitchen and actually ate on his own then I gave him his Amoxicillin which he actually seems to kinda like.
Oh yes, yesterday the Vet said that after the "week" was over and I brought him back in next week, that if things were still NOT right with him , that they would do an acid bile test but that they ONLY do them if there is an indication of a problem. They test the obvious possibilities FIRST, gradually doing more testing as it is needed. He said he may NOT need an acid bile test if the Amoxicillin works. That he could just have an infection and to wait and see before I get myself all worked up. I'm not fooling myself into thinking that Amoxicillin will "cure" averything but if it works, hey, I won't complain!!!
Right now he is the cute little growling furball be is supposed to be. No ill side effects (so far).

I'm glad your little guy is feeling better!

Just an FYI......According the Dr. Center, all Yorkies should get a bile acids test once they reach 20 weeks whether they have symptoms of a shunt or not. Unfortunately, liver shunts are more common in Yorkies than all other breeds and routine screening is very important.

A bile acids test is a very simple and inexpensive test. If it is done as a puppy, it will give your vet a baseline to refer to later on should he start showing symptoms of liver disease. It can save him from much more expensive and invasive tests like biopsies later on.

At present we recommend that all puppies undergo paired bile acid tests before they are adopted into homes (15 weeks or so). Why? Because you do not want a veterinarian to surprisingly find high bile acids when a dog is presented for illness. This results in aggressive testing that may include an expensive abdominal ultrasound and even a liver biopsy in a dog with MVD- consider for example a dog presented for vomiting after eating garbage. A high bile acid test would implicate the liver as being severely affected, and the clinician would be obligated to inform the client that the liver should be investigated. If they already knew the dog had high bile acids as a pup, consistent with MVD, then the medical investigations would be judiciously focused on the vomiting.

I am Glad to hear that your little one is doing better... and you are happy with that too !!!

I knew others would know more about the liver shunt ... and at first it did sound like it...

But we will keep hoping that it is nothing serious ... and now at least you know what to ask your vet...

Well, after MANY infections my vet did do a bile acid test. They came back high so I was referred to specialist. I went for consultation this Monday. The surgeon convinced me that Hootie had a liver shunt and needed surgery immediately so they KEPT him. (he didn't want to go with them). His surgery was Tuesday, vet called Tuesday afternoon said he did really good and if he continued he would be able to come home a day early. Then Wednesday morning (three days ago), surgeon called and started out saying, "Well, Hootie had a rough morning. He stopped breathing so Dr Green worked on him, revived and stabilized him. Then about 30 minutes later be began having trouble breathing again and although they worked on him, he never began breathing again and then his heart stopped. He died Wednesday morning". So it is now my FIRM belief that I will NEVER under ANY circumstance have any dog taken in and talked into surgery. I will simply let natures take it's course. I am now on Xanax and when they run out I am constantly crying. Hootie is buried by my back porch so I can look out at his tiny grave any time. I just pray that this pain will end soon and that NOBODY EVER has to go through what My little Hootie baby and I have!!!

I am so very sorry for your lose of Hootie. It sounds like you tried to do the very best for him. Please know that Hootie is now in a much better place and that you were a very good mommy and did what you felt was the best for him. If you would like to talk I will listen~please PM me anything. I am so sorry you have such a sick little one I will be sending prayers your way for you and your baby as far as the teeth are concerned I just had my 2 yorkies baby teeth extracted this week Snuffy on monday and Eddie thursday.I seen the post where the woman paid 450.00 for this wow.My vet removed 7 teeth from each of my boys and also microchipped them while they were asleep for 118.00 a piece.The teeth were 54,the microchip 45 and the 20 for pain meds and 7 days of antibiotics

Please don't blame yourself for his death. You were doing what you thought was best for him. Many yorkies have the surgery and live better lives. If he had died without having the surgery then you would have always wondered if you did the right thing or not. Either way it is not a winning situation when they die. We all have to live with our decisions, sometimes things just don't work out. Your little boy had been struggling with life and now he is not suffering. Please cherish his memories. Hugs.

You did what you had to do: make a decision ! If you had delayed and he died you would be blaming yourself too. Now you made another wise decision: you will let nature take its course ! And one way or another this is what happened: nature took it's course, your little one gave you his best and got your best !
Cheer up ! Yorkies love life !!! They are fighters !!! They love unconditionally !!! They do not give up !!!
Well ... cheer up ! Your little one will forever be in your heart ! Honor that !

To all that helped me with advice on Hootie the last few months, I thank you. I believe I have found a way to deal with my grief and possibly to help others in the same shape I'm in. I created a website today dedicated to parents of deceased or missing yorkie babies. There you can chat (with me) and post pictures of your own lost, missing or deceased babies. Anyway, it seems to be helping me, perhaps it can help others to talk with like minded people. No, the crying hasn't stopped...the depression only worsens the closer to Christmas it gets and Thanksgiving was literally hell to me.

Goodness he is tiny .Please look at my photos of my Andy He also had two rows of teeth and he was weak at times didnt eat alot .I'm sure your puppy has very bad breath as lots of bacteria developes in his mouth between all those teeth .Please take him in ASAP while he hopefully has some strength left .He needs to have them extracted. Andy got so much better after ,and has gained weight
