Capstar? OMG! Good Morning All! We are living in The Sunshine State for the summer and my baby has fleas...well I did the flea bath and collar~nada. So Capstar was recommended to me and I gave him a pill yesterday and he was fine, ate, drank ect ALL NORMAL. This morning about 20 hours after taking the pill he was vomiting awfully. OMG, I was so scared. Food and then foam.... and so loud it had to hurt him :-( He also had VERY liquidy diarrhea. The episode seemed to quiet down so I rinsed him off with some cool water in the kitchen sink with the sprayer and just held him. Now he is lying next to me. He is alert but wow what the heck? PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ADVERSE REACTIONS TO CAPSTAR. I HAVE BEEN READING ON LINE AND THESE ARE POSSIBLE REACTIONS BUT OF COURSE THEY DON'T TELL YOU WHAT TO DO IF YOUR 7 LB YORKIE EXPERIENCES ANY OF THEM. THANK YOU! Hugs, Bridget

My 2 lb baby had to have capstar....twice actually......the first time she threw up the next day but she was fine once she threw up. The next time she took it she was perfectly fine. My vet just said make sure she's drinking. Which she was. Maybe it just takes some getting used to for them. I will say.... that stuff works great as far as killing the fleas.

No...not for regular treatment. You're supposed to give them a capstar, to kill any adult fleas, put on advantage (or something similar), vaccuum carpet and wash all bedding. Worked for me and now I am flea free. (Wow! that sounded like a commercial)

:-) No, Bam isn't on any other meds. PS I wouldn't recommend using Capstar. The possibility of these reactions aren't worth it.

here is another thing to consider -- has your dog had bile acids done or blood work recently? because many yorkies have liver issues so any internal or external med gets into the blood stream and can affect them if they have a liver issue as the liver problem makes it harder to detox the body of the toxin so just a thought this could be a sign that your dog does not have 100% liver function. My dog has mvd so we have to be very careful of any meds due to this so just a thought to look into it the next time you do blood work if you have not had recently

liver Thank you for the info. I will have the vet test him on his next visit and knowing this I am not going to put any external meds on him either. I will try the Dawn.

I have used capstar on my girls, and they are 3.2 and 3.8lbs. I would call the company and ask them if it is a common side effect(I know that comfortis will cause vomiting)--it could be that your baby is allergic. Usually you pair capstar with another 30 day treatment, since capstar is only good for 24 hours. Dawn will strip the oils out of the skin and haircoat--there are good flea shampoos that are ph balanced for dogs, I like mycodex or adams(I've seen this at wal-mart, it used to only be available thru a vet). My boss raises yorkies, anytime the puppies need a bath-this is what we use(I'm talking maybe 4 week old pups and older), and we never had a reaction. Good luck, hope your baby is feeling better soon.

| I've used Capstar several times with Zoe (she's about 5.5 pounds) and have never had a reaction like what you described! In fact my parent's vet has said it's so safe you could use it every day (not that you should, but that you could). I've even said that I think it's a miracle pill whenever Zoe's gotten fleas (since whenever we visit my boyfriend's family she always gets fleas; even when she's on Frontline or she doesn't even set foot on their property). That said, I'm sorry you had to deal with fleas AND a sick baby! I agree with the others, I would talk to a vet. I'd be concerned that it could have been a reaction or something! All in all just keep an eye on him. Hope everything works out!
