I have a yorkie pup and she has a hernia. She is 7 weeks old, any advise or should I just take her to the vet?

Yes take her to the vet. My Pebbles had an inguinal hernia when she was born. It is very common in these small breeds. She had it fixed and she is good as new. Good luck with your baby.

I had a pup that had one too, he had a inguinal and umbilical hernia. He had them both fixed at 4 months old.

We took our Bunz(lhaso/shih) to the vet about his hernia when he was a puppy and the vet said it would get smaller and go away, and two years later, its still there. We're planning on getting it fixed when he get him neutered. Definitely get a vets advice though.

I never heard that a hernia would go away. That is very dangerous. My Pebbles got hers fixed before 8 weeks.

Ginger had a double hernia that we had fixed when she was spayed. Maggie had a very small hernia, but it closed itself up. I even had 2 vets confirm that it has closed up, so she won't need surgery. It really isn't a big deal though. And, if you plan to have your dog spayed (if female) then you can have it all done at the same time and save some money.

Welcome to YT !!

The best thing for you to do is take your pup to the vets...

They will determine what kind of hernia it has... there are different types of hernias... basically what you want to know is if it is an accidental hernia, perhaps an umbilical hernia caused by mom violently shaking and trying to cut off the umbilical for an example...

Or it could a hernia caused by a genetic predisposition to have weak muscle walls of the abdomen, like inguinal hernias usually are ...

Then after the vet determines that you and him will be discussing the next step... depending on the severity of the hernia surgery will be recomended sooner rather than later.

If it is not that severe but still needs to be fixed by surgery you may wait until it is time to get the dog fixed and get it done right there...

And it may be such a small hernia that may have a great chance of closing as the puppy grows and abdominal walls gets stronger...

Hernias don't go away, they just get worse. Baxter was born with one, and had it fixed around 8 weeks, before I got him. They even neutered him at the same time.

I had a little 5lb Yorkie,Chelsea [RIPChelsea] and the vet dicovered an inguinal hernia when I took her for her 1st. check up,he fixed it when I had her spayed,no big deal, she was wonderful and lived 15 years.

Hernias can and often do go away as the abdominal wall strengthens.Was advised to wait untill she was at least 6 months.
I had a puppy with inquinal hernia and the vets explained that there is an opening that closes over. At 6 months they examined her thoroughly and couldnt find the hernia.
