Parvo Well on Tuesday I took our litter in to be examined, everyone was great. On Wednesday night I noticed one had a slightly soft stool. Didn't think too much. Thursday he was getting a little worse, called the vet and they recommended keeping him hydrated. Everyone else is doing good, may just be a slight reaction to vaccines. This morning he dies. I called the vet rush everyone in, and we have Parvo. Never in 30 years have we had Parvo. Nothing has changed around here, except I switched vets. I am now thinking, had I not everyone would be fine. I chose to switch over because, they are the best in our area, and our current vet was more into equine/cattle care than small animal. I thought I was doing our babies better by going with a small animal and well recommendedoffice. I strongly believe that it was contracted in the vets office. And the vet some what agreed. But since it is so highly contagious they can't be held responsible. He was kind enough to not charge and office fee, and not charge me for an experimental drug that has shown to work well. My total was only 163.00 and that covered the testing, a saline drip to administer fluids under the skin, amoxicillian, and anti nausea medicine. I have my hands full with all our dogs being exposed and two more litters, one that is 5 weeks old and one that is 3 weeks old. I never imagined that it would be Parvo, that was the last thing from my mind. Here's what the plan is Oseltamivir(experimental drug) today and tomorrow, Beef liver water 4 times a day, 1/4 dropper of Amoxicillin twice a day, Metoclpramide 0.3 mL twice a day and saline fluids injected 2-3 times a day. We are also giving all the dogs ( that are not ill) a shot of Duramune Max Pv as precaution, even though all are fully/currently vaccinated, and the pups will now receive the Pv at 6-10-12-14 weeks along with our regular schedule of 5 way at 8-12-16 weeks, per his recommendation. Has anyone had any luck pulling a litter thru? I am so stressed and feeling overwhelmed, I can't stand the thought of these poor babies suffering. I just don't understand why/how this happened. |

OMGosh! I am so sorry! I have no idea what you're going through, but you will all be in my thoughts and prayers. :( |

OMG! What a nightmare! I am so sorry! Several times my Vet has had me wait outside while they disinfect... One of my biggest worries, yet we do need our Vets.. What to do?? Scary! Wishing you much luck and sending prayers your way! |

I am so sorry! I am praying for the rest of them. That is one of my biggest fears. I ALWAYS bring pee pads with me to the vet to put down on the table so mine don't actually touch the table but even with that I know they could still get infected. I never let them down on the floor or let them use the bathroom outside of the vets. Don't beat yourself up about it. You made a choice for what was best for them and you could not have predicted or prevented this either way. My thoughts are with you for everyone else to do fine through this. Kim |

I had 2 basset hounds they were pups and dolly got it first I called the vet and they said they could hook her up with IVs upstairs in there vet office 20% chance making it So I took the job in doing it instead them being there so sick and not with me I did what I could do it was a constant taking care of them and getting up just to push fluids downs with a syringe I bought human pepo bismol and gave that to her by syringe sometimes when you look at her you had to look hard just to see if she were breathing I kept this up I also got infant pedi lite gave that to her and more pepo bismol And we had some LA 200 we had to do something and we just took the chance they were really for cattle goats and we used to use it when we had goats gave her a small dosage of it when they were looking better I would take her puppy food blend it in a blender with a little pedi lite and give them a syringe of it. she got over it ...them Molly got it did the same thing with then poor Dolly got it back Doctored them both They both made it And I think when Dolly got it twiced I think that was what made her smaller then her sister that only got it once They were healthy after that But it took alot of work and praying (Usually the floors would also be contaminated any where the pup with it has been) I really don't remember what I did for that but they did make it and was healthy:animal-pa |

Thank you everyone who has offered prayers. We are still hanging in there this evening. I have bleached all the floors and started on the walls. The doc said it wouldn't matter. There is no getting rid of it. He said the only way to get it out of the home would be to get rid of everything and rebuild a completely sterile home and yard and live in a bubble. I understand that there is no way of knowing where it is and with five acres to contend with it is impossible. But know that I am bleaching all the floors( as I do 3-4 times a day anyways) and even going to wipe down the walls with bleach water. I am just still in denial that this is happening. He also said that since our dams are well vet'd it works against us. That Bitches who do not get the recommended care often have better immunities to pass on. I don't know if I believe that, but it does make sense that they would have more natural immunities. I just hope that these babies pull thru. It is never easy losing one, and to lose a whole litter or half at this age is heartwrenching. I have a hard enough time with them leaving home, to have them pass on so horribly is...awful. Not even the worst dog deserves to suffer like this. Thank you all who are thinking of my babies. And any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |

Hi I don't have any suggestions, but can only offer my sympathy. I know you are doing everything you can, and even if the vet says it will do no good it makes you feel better doing it. I hope and pray that none of your other dogs have the parvo. |

oh wow what a sad read .. wish you all the best and offer prayers of hope that the babies pull through and that none of your other litters come down with it |

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. I hope and pray all will go well!!!! |

update Well after a couple hours of sleep, I got up and checked the babies. One is much worse(he was the worst yesterday) two are about the same, and one is much better. He was tearing up the puppy pads and wanted out to play so bad. I feel sorry for him, having to stay locked up. The one guy, I fret is just not going to make it. He is very lifeless. I am getting ready to try and feed him and hydrate everyone. I am going to add some vanilla pedi-sure to routine. I already started in with the bleaching again this morning, I can't handle that smell of Parvo. Oh it is horrible. Thanks again to everyone praying for us, and the kind words. |

The company that sells the parvaid has this emergency tea... here's the link. Parvo Emergency Tea Recipe I have no idea if it works but I hope so! Also, I have found invaluable information from this yahoo group: CanineRepro-PuppyCare : Discussing The Practical Issues I'm really hoping your little ones make it!:( |

Update I have lost another guy. I don't know if I can make it thru this. My heart is breaking everytime I look at them. One of the boys seems to be feeling okay, at least better than the other two. My little girl is not having much luck keeping anything down, I am giving her food every hour, only about 1/2 ounce and making sure she is not dehydrated. But I really think she is not going to make it. I called the vet and he said not to add anything to the routine, until Tuesday. That it may interact with the drug that he formulated for them. So I am taking his advice. I pray that they make it. I notified everyone on my waiting list, and refunded the deposits that were taken on Tuesday after the vet appointment. I still just feel like this is a bad dream, and I am going to wake up and feel relieved. If any of the other babies or adults come down with this I will need to be placed in a padded room. I can't handle this, it is so horrible to watch them suffer. Am I doing right by them, or should I have them put down. I feel like such a bad mommy, how could I let this happen to them......I know I had no control over it but, it hurts so much to see them suffer and not know if I am going to be able to save them or just drawing out their suffering. |
|
I am so sorry this has happened. i know it hurts but I am sure youare doing everything you can to help them. Fortunately, I haven't had it since I have been breeding but my hubby had it in his Beagel kennel about thirty years ago and it is so hard to get rid of. You are in my thoughts and prayers. |

I have been checking for updates and was hoping things were looking better.. oh geez my heart so goes out to you.. I just cannot imagine the emotional pain and the anxiety your going through right now.. I cannot believe a vet would have a parvo case and let you come in with such young babies for shots... what was he/she thinking... Such devestation that could have been prevented.. sending prayers.. anne |

my Lexi had parvo when i got her.. she came so close to passing. but within about a month she was all better! with the help of three different meds and rest. she stayed at the emergency vets for almost a week on fluids! just because i was scared that i couldnt keep her hydrated on my own since she was throwing up so much. right before she came home i bleached EVERYTHING. and i sprayed lysol on everything else! haha. dont forget the bottoms of shoes, the couches, door knobs. anything youve touched after touching them or their environment. good luck! |

Oh my, I am so sorry you have to go through this. Parvo is a horrible thing. My neighbor's 4 m.o. puppy just had it, and her litter mate actually passed away because they didn't get him to treatment in time. I'll keep you and your babies in my prayers!!!!! Please keep us updated. Hugs, Nadezda |

Thank you again everyone for being so supportive. I will update again this even before I head to bed. The vets office probably see's over 100 clients a day if not more. I am not sure that they actually had a case right before me, but I just know in my heart that it came from there. Just because these pups are the ones that came down with it just a day after being out of the home. I understand that they take precaution, but it still isn't enough. They have no way of knowing if someone brought the virus in and with it being so contagious it's just putting everyone at risk. They made me wait outside the office till our room was ready, but still I am carrying them in and out thru the lobby, touching handles signing the forms, paying at the front desk, so by just cleaning the exam room and the doc arms and hands what is that really doing? He told me that it gets in your hair, on your clothes, the walls, floors, everything. So even though he used exam gloves it could still be on him somewhere when you goes to exam the next pet. Or I just contaminated the doors walls etc, by walking in and touching things. So really how safe it is to take our babies out. I am strongly reconsidering the vet check till all shots are complete. While talking about this with him he said that the same thing happened about a week and a half ago, a lady brought a six month old female in to get a health certificate for shipping. The dog was in perfect condition they gave the rabies shot and then the next day she called up because the pup had become lethargic, she brought her in and she had Parvo. That is basically the same thing that happened with us. He said that her neighbors just lost two of their dogs to Parvo, so that is most likely where her dog contracted it from, but that it was possible that she was infected there. My head just keeps going over and over everything that happened. And that had I just stuck to our small DVM's office this never would have happened. But I will never know, and I need to just stop thinking about it. Thanks for listening to me......I will post about the babies soon |

Parvo is an ugly disease. We have had good luck at my clinic with Tama Flu. We keep it on hand just in case a case comes in. |

My vet told me that Parvo most often is transmitted through feces, and that it can lay dormant for up to 6 months on any surface. So we ended up cleaning the spot where Daisy pooped in our back yard with 10 parts to 30 parts bleach & water, according to the vet's recommendation. Again, I'm holding my fingers crossed for you and your babies! |

I had a litter get parvo and I brought it home from where I work. I work in a grocery store. My co-worker had a puppy that got parvo. She said absolutely nothing to me even though she new I had a 7 week old litter. She also exhibited dogs and knew how devistating parvo could be. Well, I just walked it home to my pups. I knew it came from her as I had not been to the vet or anywhere else that dogs might hang out. I watched every puppy but one die. It was horrible and I am truely sorry for what you are experiencing now. |

I have 2 acres and I bleached everything I could. I got a hose sprayer and filled the container full of bleach and sprayed as much as possible multiple times. my whole house smelled of bleach, but it was better than that parvo smell. Best of luck to you!! |

Update 3 Attachment(s) Well everyone is sleeping, I will give them a little more fluids before I head to bed in a couple hours. They seem to be the same as earilier. I am really doubting that Cosmo(little girl) is going to pull thru. She is hanging on but I just have that feeling. Yoda(biggest boy) he is still upbeat, and Pete, he is not much better than Cosmo. I am going to attach pictures of them from Monday, this was before it all happened. I love these little guys so much. I can't remember the last time I had so much heartache...... |

The second litter will 6 weeks on Thursday, that is when I planned on giving it to them. I was just afraid of it lowering their immunity too much, but he said it was better to try the vaccine than chance not giving it. So that is the plan. |
|
Update Cosmo passed on this morning around 4:00 am and I just lost Pete. Yoda is still hanging on with a positive attitude. He is eating on his own but still has loose stools. He is tearing up the puppy pads and not acting ill at all. I have high hopes for him. Thank you again for everyones prayers. I will not be at ease for awhile, still really concerned about the other two litters. Lucy's litter will be six weeks on Thursday and will get the Pv shot if still not showing signs. I will continue to update the thread. |

Oh, I am so so sorry. I know it is tearing you apart. Good luck with your other litters. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. |
