air licking Ted has suddenly began sticking his tongue out as if to lick the air constantly...almost as if he has peanut butter in his mouth. Is this a sign of some medical issue? thanks |
Not to scare you but this can be a serious sign of something. I can't remember what though :( |

Please let us know what you find out. I may be overreacting, but my little one licks her lips a whole lot- not sure if that is the same or if that is something to worry about. |
I will let you know. Hoping I can get him in to see the vet. Can't find a solid answer on the net. Everything from obsessive attention getting behavior to something stuck in their teeth to allergies (I did recently change food to Canidae) and the worst...kidney problem. Poor wee man. It looks so annoying. |

Really?? There's a medical issue behind that?? Mimi girl does it all the time...only when I'm brushing her tho. I thought it was cuz she enjoyed the brushing! I'm calling my vet, but please...yes, keep us updated. I'm soo worried now! |
Ted's appointment is 9:30 California time tomorrow. He seems healthy otherwise (bit overweight though); so, hopefully, it turns out to be something silly. I imagine they'd have to run tests for allergies and such. He does eat a lot of chicken or maybe it's something in the Canidae that doesn't agree with him. "Air licking" of all things to get us worried, huh. |
Mine eat chicken too! I hope it's nothing serious...I made an appt too for 9am tomorrow (Wed) to have acid bile test & whatever else needs to be done for both Mimi & Momo. Been reading here on YT that too much protein is bad for yorkies...soo worried! But they won't eat their food unless I mix in plain boiled chicken breast...smart stinkers! Well, it's my fault :( |
Ted wants his CHICKEN in his kibble too. I have noticed though that if I leave the kibble out long enough without the chicken he will eventually eat it...I just feel so bad to give him plain boring kibble. My fault too. |
How old is Ted? Is he losing his baby teeth? Daisy Mae did that when she was about 5 to 6 mos. old. One of her molars could not fall out all the way and then her adult tooth starting coming out and the tooth was caught hanging there. Thanx, Kathy. Ted's almost a year and a half. Any baby teeth left in there? i tried to look, but I can't tell what tooth is what. Of course tonight, now that I made the appointment, not too much air licking going on...little rascal. |

Just back from the vet. He said it's nothing to worry about, most likely allergic to something he ate; so he recommended I take him off the Canidae and go back to his old food (Life's Abundance) or Science Diet. He discovered his little knee joint is loose and a wee diet should help allieviate future problems. He got his shots today, we went to the park, and now he's resting completely unaware that his "treats" will be cut in half. Good luck to all AIR LICKERS. |
Wow, I didn't know there could be medical reasons for this. Becca always did this when I scratched her back for her. She looked like a little frog catching flies. :p |
Thank you so much for letting us know what your vet told you. I'm glad it's only an allergy and not something more serious. Poor baby- hopefully he won't miss those treats too much ;) It's hard not to spoil the little cuties! :) |
So glad Ted is alright! I dropped off Mimi & Momo at the vet this morning to have their acid bile tests done & totally forgot to ask the doc about the air licking.:rolleyes: I'll ask when I pick them up & see what he says. BTW, Science Diet isn't a premium food. If you go to Yorkie health & diet section, there's a sticky w/a list of all the premium food companies & you can request a sample. I'm feeding mine Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato (they really like it)...grain free & limited ingredients for allergy sufferers. I better lay off the treats too. |
Researching on the net, it could be something as simple as enjoying a good bum scratch and not a medical problem...so keep scratching your little furbutt. Allergy seems to be common cause of air licking |
The vet did say "Now that Science Diet is back to being a reputable company"....that doesn't sit well with me; so maybe I'll try what you're feeding. I switched foods cause Wallace the Lab was too expensive to keep up with the cost of Life's Abundance and it's impossible to do two different foods as they constantly have to check out the other's bowl. Sweet potato sounds yummy. He said he could still have his chicken just to cut back 10 percent on the food and chicken and cut treats completely in half. What's life without treats; right!!! I'll be interested to hear what your vet says about the "air licking" as mine didn't feel the need to run allergy tests at this time. Thanx, corrinne |
Just to add something to the mix... I read recently that lip licking is a sign that the dog is worried about personal space. I'm not sure if this is different from "air licking". But if your dog is yawning and licking his lips while you scratch him, unfortunately, this probably means that you are a little too close for his comfort. A dog can also lick his lips while he approaches you to let you know that he respects YOUR space. In that case, it's an appeasement gesture. It's been quite a bummer for me to discover that, because once I started looking for it, I realized that Thor is uncomfortable with a lot of my physical contact. You know that cute little tongue flick dogs sometimes do when their picture is taken? It's a sign that they are uncomfortable. I asked an animal trainer at my local shelter and she confirmed that it's a sign of discomfort, and told me to back off a little and let him approach me. I can post references to these books if anyone is interested. |

Thanks QuickSilver for that post. I notice Mimi doing the air licking when I'm brushing her & when I get near her bum area...she seems to not like it. She loves getting brushed, just not near her bum. I've heard somewhere that dogs air lick people when they're not sure of you or to get a 'feel' of your mood. But I forgot about this until you posted your insight. Yeah, looks like a lizard tongue or like bonbon said like a frog catching a fly! lol :) |

I'm glad to hear that Ted's air licking isn't anything serious. When the vet put my Daffney "on a diet" he told us to replace her treats with carrots. So now I cut baby carrots into smaller pieces and she loves them. I've heard that carrots help to keep their teeth clean, too. Linda K. |
My Kayla licks the air when she gets something stuck in her teeth. I brush her teeth and she is fine. It is aways food stuck. |

Word from my vet...'air licking' can be many things... One of them can be hair in their mouth, he said to trim the hairs around the mouth...I need to but she won't let me. Two, it can be their teeth...checked her teeth & she's fine. Three, it's nothing serious. What a relief! Their acid bile test results are tomorrow, but he said not to worry, they should be fine. |
