| Eye swollen shut I came home this evening to find my 1-year-old Yorkie, Blake, as happy and full of energy as usual--but one of her eyes was completely swollen shut and the hair all around it looked matted. I wiped her eye several times with a cloth and warm water and now it's open about 3/4, but there was yellow mucous (or something) all around the eye and in her hair. If she seemed lethargic or anything, I would have taken her to the emergency vet, but her attitude is fine--despite having only one eye to see out of for hours. Has anyone had an experience like this with their Yorkie? I'm trying not to freak out but I'm so worried. I'm going to bring her to the vet tomorrow, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do for her tonight. Any advice would be appreciated... |

| Sugar was having quite a lot of eye problems related to allergies and ended up with an eye infection. Blake's symptoms sound just like Sugar's. Antibiotics cleared it right up- he was better just a few days into them and in the meanwhile I just had to be really diligent about washing his eyes to keep the goo from accumulating.

| It sounds like an infection. The vet can give you drops or ointment and they can check for a scratch.

| It's probably not allergies because the symptoms are only in 1 eye. So it's probably pink eye or some other infection. If it's bothering her, just make sure she's not rubbing it or she could scratch her eyeball.

| It's probably conjunctivitis, but it could be dry eye or even a corneal scratch. Your vet will be able to diagnose it easily and prescribe drops. FYI, conjunctivitis is contagious to humans so be very careful to wash your hands after you clean his eyes. |

| my dd has horrible allergies and this happened once when she had beef and only one eye swole up as she rubbed it over and over on carpet and it swelled shut If the mucous in eye is yellow or green it is sign of infection eyes are nothing to mess with they are one of the most important things to get in right away with per vet so go in asap and have them look for scratch as rubbing and pawing at it can cause this and if hair was matted then definitely was doing that. They will give eye drops did anything change in treats or diet that would cause her to itch her eye? It could be as simple as she had a hair in it and she kept rubbing it then irritated it further |
