Shelby - facing another hardship. I have been hesitant to write this, as so many of you have been going thru what we went thru a little over a year ago. I don't want to be discouraging, but really am hoping for some in-put and maybe advice from anyone who may have an idea of what we are dealing with now. As some of you know, Shelby had bi-lateral luxating patella surgery in Feb of 2008. It was a true success and her little knees are still in place. She had no problems until now. A few weeks ago we noticed that Shelby was favoring her left leg. Lifting it when standing, and not always putting it down when she ran. I thought it was her patella...... and so we went to her orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday. He did a thorough exam and then did x-rays. He came back and consulted with my husband and myself telling us that her patellas are still where they needed to be and they looked wonderful...... but what we may be facing is a slight tear of an ACL. :cry8::cry8::cry8: Right now, she is being confined at all times, except for potty time and when she eats. It is so very difficult on her. (not to mention Seymour, who wants to play with his big sissy so badly). She is also taking some meds for pain. I am pretty distraught. I just feel like this little bright eyed, energetic, little gal just ain't getting a break. We did everything that we could do for her while going thru her first surgery, including taking her to a rehabilitation center (where she had the best PT.... laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, and hydro-therapy. AND we did our own PT exercises between those appointments)....... just to have to face this now. And if we see no success in the next couple of weeks, she may have to face another VERY intense surgery. Has anyone else had this happen AFTER a patella surgery? or know of someone that had this misfortune? |
Oh my gosh, girl...I am just *SO* incredibly sorry that you and Shelby are going through this. Before I continue though, I just have to say how INCREDIBLY thoughtful you are for even being hesitant about posting this being that so many of our babies have just gone through LP surgery. But please do not ever worry about that. I am just so concerned about Shelby now. Of course it does put a little worry in the back of my mind with Tatum, but I want to know all that is going on with Shelby because I truly do love that little girl. You have always been there to help me with all of the LP info regarding Tatum, and I want to be there for you and Shelby also in any way I can. My heart is just broken for you guys. I hope and PRAY that sweet little Shelby doesn't need another surgery  Please, please, please keep me updated on her. I will be checking back in this thread often....love you guys...and give that sweet angel a little hug for me  |

Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. I will keep you posted. I have called her rehab specialist and hopefully will get some input from her. There is a possibilty that she may be able to help us .... and I wanted to get her in "the loop". I can already see the $$$ flying out the door again..... but we gotta do what we gotta do! :) I WILL keep you updated. |
Im so sorry to hear her having problems with her leg again. Ill pray that it heals. |

I am keeping my fingers crossed that her rehab specialist will be able to help you out and give you some answers :hands: As for the money part, I HEAR YA! :( It costs an arm and a leg...I need to get myself a TATUM credit card! |
I'm not of any help as far as experience with it or knowing anything about it but I will definitely keep you both in my prayers... bless her heart! |
Wow.. I am sending my hugs and prayers your way as well! |
I am sorry to hear about Shelby. My yorkie that I had back in the 70's had a torn ACL and they did the surgery and did his knee at the same time since it looked bad when they went in. Zorro did well after the surgery and if I remember correctly he wasn't down for that long. I will say that even after surgery when he was standing still he would still hold that back leg up but if never seemed to bother him. I also heard that in small dogs you don't always need to have the ACL surgery. I hope the specialist can help you avoid surgery. I will keep you both in my prayers |
I'm sorry I can be of no help with this particular problem. I'm sorry your little one is going through this. I will keep you both in my prayers. |
I am soo sorry..you are in our prayers.. |
I am so sorry that you are going through this with Shelby and I truley hope she gets better soon. As far as a Torn ACL goes, A pitbull puppy that we had sold had gotten a Torn ACL in her new home and I KNOW it's not a Yorkie and may be different in healing time etc. but the injury is the same and I am sure the possibilities can be as well. the puppy was only about 11 weeks old and she had healed up without Surgery, she was on Pain Meds and kept on the low key and the vet had said there was a possibility surgery would be needed BUT in the end she had healed on her own. So there is a possibility that Shelby can recover without surgery. I would just keep doing what you are doing and giving her love and we will all be sending prayers your way.. I really hope she recovers quickly and again I am very sorry about this. I know what its like to worry about your babies and feel bad for them.. and it's definately not fun and not something I wish on anyone. ~ Adrianna Quote:

Thank-you all for your postings on this thread!...... The ortho vet said that we ARE going to try to keep her "low key" for a few weeks, but it seems as if she is favoring that leg more now than she has a couple days ago. I don't understand why she would.... unless she injured herself further in her crate (... and we are using a soft crate with a solid, firm crate pad). She has a small lightweight blanket in there to lay on but it is small and nothing that is all going to cause her any problems). I am so hoping that she starts healing and we can avoid a surgery....... but right now it seems like it isn't looking like it is going in that direction. I hope that I am "jumping too quickly" with my thoughts and she proves me wrong. Again, ty so much for the encouraging words..... and I will keep you posted on her progress. |

But we know that they are worth it!! ....... By the way, how is little "Tater" doing this morning? I WILL keep you posted. Anything that the vet or rehab therapist says (especially associated with LP) I will relay. I was told that by having LP surgery it would help to avoid any ACL tearing..... but it wouldn't "guarantee" it. So I guess we just happened to fall thru that crack. :( One good thing, Shelby is eating well, pooping well, and would LOVE to thump on her little brother. They both miss playing with eachother so badly. (Now they lay next to eachother and Bop eachother on the nose with their front paws). Silly dogs! Take care....... will post again later today. Hugs! |
Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. I will be sending prayers and positive thoughts your way! |
I am so sorry about sweet little Shelby. Hope the crating heals her quickly. Sending get well wishes and hugs your way. |
Ohh, I'm so sorry to hear sweet Shelby is injured! I will keep her in my prayers that she'll heal without surgery. |
I am SO SORRY about Shelby!!! Seriously, I completely agree with Brooke- DO NOT EVER hesitate to post anything that is a problem just because other people are going through similar things. I would MUCH rather hear about possible problems and be able to support others who have so much supported myself and my boys. I don't remember when Shelby had her surgery, or what grade her LP was. One thing to consider- when we were talking with the surgeon before we scheduled surgery, one of the things that solidified our decision was when he said the longer the LP goes on, the more chance for ligament damage. Could the ACL have possibly been damaged before surgery, and is now causing problems? I am PRAYING that rest will heal this. No baby should have to go through a surgery like this more than once. Please, please, please keep us updated on Shelby. |

Thanks so much for your input....... It is so good to get as much info as possible... If you can remember anything else..... that would be great! Also thanks for your thoughts and well wishes...... we need them!!!.... :animal-pa |
Thanks to all that are sending us good thoughts!!!....... We appreciate each and everyone of you!!! Shelby is still being jailed, and carried around like a football. I am starting to think that she is enjoying all the extra attention. I wasn't able to talk to our PT today. She had an emergency and so I will wait until tomorrow. |

Tatum is doing great today! She went out to potty and is still using her left leg (just not when picking up speed...when she does that, she still "hops" and holds the left leg up off the ground). I am just so proud of her though. It just amazes me how well she has done throughout this whole thing. I had high hopes for her, but I honestly didn't expect her to be doing THIS good so fast! That little girl really shocks me sometimes! :D I just still can't believe poor little Shelby  That sweetheart has been though way too much over the last year and she doesn't deserve this one bit! Of course, no baby deserves it....but poor Shelby?? I just feel so completely awful for her  That really is great news though that she is still so upbeat! Glad to hear that she is eating and drinking well and is pooping too - alright SHELBY! :cheer: Way to go! I bet she really does want to play with her brother...Tatum would love to play with Steddy too (and Steddy is just ITCHING to play with her!) but it's Yorkie Jail for a long time to come still :( I keep counting down the days! Give Shelby a little hug and kiss for me...I just love that sweetheart! |

LOL....carried around like a football, HAH! Tator is carried the exact same way lol. :D Will check back tomorrow and see if you were able to talk to Shelby's physical therapist. :) Give her hugs for me! |
OH NO!!! Im sooooooooooooooooo sorry...:( it makes me sooooooooooooo sad that you guys are going thur this... :( I hope she gets better soon!! HUGS |
Just wanted to check in on little Shelby :) How is she doing today? Were you able to talk to her PT yet? Hope everything is ok girl! Hugs to you and sweet Shelby. |

She tried to thump Seymour after breakfast (one of her favorite games). OF couse, she was scooped up immediately and put back in puppy jail. I swear, she is worse than a juvenile delinquent!! I guess she will start having her meals in jail, too!!! Have a wonderful Easter everyone! |

LOL poor Shelby and Tator Bug...they are both eating their little meals in jail :( I can only imagine how sick of it they are! I wish I could just open the flap on Tate's house and let her RUN WILD...but unfortunately that won't be happening any time soon :( Our poor little angels! Give Shelby a big hug and kiss for me (and Seymour too!) - I love those babies! Oh and, Happy Easter to you guys!!! |
I was checking in for an update on Miss Shelby. I'm sorry to hear she's still favoring her leg. Have you been able to talk to the PT yet? |

I am so sorry that Shelby and you are going thru this. It's not fair. She's been thru so much already. :( I hope that she will not need surgery. I've no experience with this. I read some posting that their dog didn't need the surgery after all, I will keep my fingers crossed that Shelby will indeed be one of them too. Maybe she just needs to rest a bit and just keep of the leg for awhile. I'll keep her and you in my thoughts and prayers. :hands: And if you or Brooke ever find that credit card without the bill....Share, Share! :D:D |
Update... I believe this can be called "good news"!!! :woof: I got thru to Shelb's Physical therapist today and also talked to her orthopedic vet/surgeon. He agrees that it will be great for Shelby to go thru some PT for a few weeks. This will hopefully help in her healing. She will start next week Thursday. (so 10 days from now). Shelby will be getting e-stim therapy, ultrasound therapy, and laser therapy. I know she will be so excited to see her friend again at the rehab center....... Shelby LOVED getting the Ultrasound therapy..... she would relax and almost fall asleep!!! I am so excited for this to start..... and in the meantime, Shelby will continue to be the "jailed princess" that she is! |
Oh, I am so sorry! Poor Shelby just can't seem to get a break. I know what you are going through - having to keep them separated and Seymour wanting to play with her. Mine are so close that it breaks my heart when they can't play together. I'm sure she'll be running around with him in no time. Keep us updated! |
