Sick baby....help, please? We have a 13 wk old girl who usually is full of spunk and energy, but this afternoon she's been very subdued. She's thrown up frothy clear/yellowy bile. I know this can be a sign of hunger, but we can't get her to eat anything. She did drink a little water, but not much. What should I do? |
She is vomiting the bile up because her tummy is empty. Please take her in to the vet. She is very, very young. ANd these little puppies have a high chance of dehydrating quickly. Do not wait. She needs medical care ASAP. At this age they can't go long without food and water. ANd can expire quickly. Please take her in to your vet. Right now. |
If she won't eat, she needs a vet soon. You don't want to risk her blood sugar falling. Have you tried nutri-cal? |
Hi, this is Steph's husband. She is on the way to the vet as I type. Will update as soon as I hear something. |
oh good luck to you, I hope all is well and its nothing serious. |
good Luck! |
Please update us when you get back from the vet. |
Vet is keeping our baby. She tested positive for Parvo, even though she has had two vaccinations for it. We are now going through and bleaching everything to kill any virus that might still be around. Keep her in your prayers please. |
I am so sorry to hear your baby has Parvo. I will keep her in my prayers. |

Any idea where she got it? Had she been to grooming salons or pet stores? A member on another forum's puppy got it from his own backyard. It wasn't fenced and neighborhood dogs used it for a bathroom. Here is a good article that explains how puppies who have had vaccinations can still get parvo. At 13 weeks, she was probably only about 50% protected. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |

No, she hasn't been to any salons or pet stores....the only place she could have gotten it was from our own yard. The vet sent home enough vaccinations to do the rest of the litter and Lilah and Vader. Hopefully this will keep any of the others from getting sick. Thanks for all of your concern...we appreciate it! |
oh, I am so sorry for all of you. Praying she is better soon & that the others will be protected. Prayers too for your cleaning efforts. What a huge job to take on. |
How is your baby today...Just checking.... |

So far the other pups (and Lilah and Vader) seem ok. They're all playing and eating and drinking normally. I'm gonna call the vet in a little while and check on Kya again, then will update again :) |
I am praying for your little puppy. I am very sorry it is parvo . Thankfully the other two pups are doing well. I am very glad you guys took your little pup in and got her started with treatment. The earlier the better with Parvo. |
Sending prayers and warm thoughts. I hope she will be ok, please update when you can:( |
Im so glad your little pup is doing better and hope your babies at home stay well. Whats with Parvo lately. I've been hearing about lots of cases....Lissette |
I am so sorry your baby is sick. I pray she makes a speedy recovery. The incubation period for parvo is 3 to 7 days. I pray the other babies don't get it. Do you mind sharing with us at what age your puppies received their first two sets of shots and were they given by the vet? |
I am sorry to hear that your baby is sick! I hope that she gets better soon! |
Ummm our Jasper is 12 wks. and he goes to the Vet Thursday for his next set of shots. He has had diareaha for about two days now.I just thought he was eating too much. You guys have me scared now that something else could be wrong.I thought once they got a Parvo shot they would be ok.He got one in Feb.Since then we took him to the groomers to have his bangs trimmed,he goes to Puppy school and we take him out in the yard and we go for walks and to the park.I am scared now.I guess I will call the Vet Monday to see about getting him in quicker. |
My goodness, poor thing. I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. Please keep us updated. |

The general rule is that puppies shouldn't be around "stranger" dogs or in places like groomers', PETCO, etc. until they have had ALL their first year shots. But it may not be anything serious, so don't worry too much! Just get him to the vet sooner if his symptoms escalate. |
Parvo? Poor baby. We'll keep her and your other puppies in our thoughts and pray she gets better. Good luck cleaning - I'm sure it's a daunting task. |
Just saw the thread, so sorry. Hope that the puppy will be up and about soon. Also glad the other ones are not showing signs. Getting them tested is also a great idea. Best wishes , hope all is going better today. |

Do you mind sharing where you got your vaccinations, what brand and what vaccinations were given? I am just wondering if the vet could have misdiagnosed your puppy. Do you know what test the vet ran to determine parvo. I have heard there are other bacterial infections that puppies can get that are confused with parvo. Here is an a little information from the following website: Parvovirus In Dogs - Parvo In Your Dog Quote:

In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |
When I brought home my Yorkie puppy home she was going on 9 weeks old. The breeder had already given 2 rounds of vaccines. The puppies had not ever been exposed to any other animals or even been outside. I took my new puppy to the vet a couple day later after bringing her home. The vet reccomened me start completely over with the all the vaccines. My first thought was that this was too much and it was over vaccinating my little puppy. However, the breeder started too early. Therefore, I did choose to began the vaccines over. There is a high incidence of Parvo in my area. Suzi has turned a yr this month and has never become infected with any of these deadly ilnessess. i believe i did the right thing with her. Parvo can come in on people's shoes, hands, or anything from outside where there has been exposure. |

I'll probably get bashed for it, but we used vaccines from a local farming supply store. I know people who have gotten their vaccines there before and not had any problems. As for the diarrhea, she didn't have any at all while we were home, but once we got to the clinic, she had just a little. And the vet has told me this weekend that she's mainly vomiting, with very little diarrhea. I'm not sure what test they ran, my statement just says "Parvovirus Test". I'm wondering if it may have gotten onto our property from stray cats...we've noticed a couple around the last few weeks...as a matter of fact, when we came home last night, there was one sitting on the top rail of our front porch. We are doing everything we can think of to "de-germ" the house...bleaching all hard floors, and we even spent the morning ripping out our living room and hallway carpet, because Kya had thrown up on it. It may sound extreme, but we are trying as hard as we can to ensure the safety and health of our other dogs. |
Years ago I too use to buy my vaccines from feed stores until I heard that is was not a good idea. You never know if they have been properly stored plus in our area they only sell the 7 in 1 shots and I would never again give that to one of my babies. I order mine now from Revival, distemper and parvo only. From what I have read cats do not get parvo, they get something called Panleukopenia Virus and it is not transmitted to dogs. I guess if you ever have stray dogs in your yard you could have tracked it in that way. I still have to wonder if the puppy actually has parvo. If she does then I would be concerned about the other puppies. Has this puppy had anything stressful going on the last few days prior to being sick? Often puppies can be in contact with the parvo virus but not have an outbreak until they get stressed about something. |
