She ate the barrette Penny is just getting long enough bangs that I can get a barrette to stay in. I put a barrette in this morning and 10 minutes later I saw her chewing on something. She ate half the barrette! How do you keep barrettes in your dog's hair and how do you keep them from eating them??

Did she swallow the other half? If she did, you need to call your vet and see what they recommend. Barrettes can cause an obstruction or even a perforation in the bowel. Hopefully, it will pass on it's own. Bands are much safer. They also stay in much better.

Ya that is why I don't use them anymore. They always finish in their mouth! I found that when I use soft hair band, they don't care as much. I think it is because it doesn't pull their hair . Not ti thigh, they don't like it and will take it off. This is what I use now, the small ones w/out the metal part. You can had the bow over it. Good luck

I had a tiny butterfly clip in her hair to keep her hair out of her eyes, since it is getting longer. Now you see it then you don't- it was gone. I had no idea she would do this. Called my vet right away and he told me to watch her- if she started vomiting within the next 24 hrs I had to bring her in right away. If not she would pass it. She did. Now we only use bands. I hope she will outgrow this though because I am crafty and have made some cute little bows for her. I guess I will just have to use the bows on my daughters if she doesn't stop eating everything in sight!

I, too, only use bands. I put bows or barrettes in when they are being watched closely or for pictures, etc. I know my Katy would eat the barrette. I use the tiniest bands 1/4" diameter bands. I wrap them twice around and they hold well.

The vet said to watch her, but since it was a tiny plastic barrette, it will probably just pass on through. She chewed off the straight part that keeps it closed. Thanks everyone!
