So upset, a child hurt my puppy... I don't know exactly how to react to this...Please give me some advice. Today, a boy who is 5 years old threw my puppy (6mos. old) off of our deck onto the rocks below! It was a fall of about 5 feet. I am SO upset! I watch this child at my home one day per week, and he is typically a mild mannered, good kid. He was playing outside with my son & the dog, then the next thing I know...the boys are telling me the dog is hiding because she is hurt. I asked them what happened and they told me Jack threw the dog off the deck. I was inside while they were outside, but I could see them...I was doing dishes in the kitchen...the door was open...I am beating myself up because I wish I could've stopped this from happening. Her leg or hip must be broken, becasue she cannot walk on the back leg and is hopping & holding it up. She does not appear to be in extreme pain...no yelping or anything, but she is not well. I cannot take her into the vet until tomorrow morning and it is past midnight now...I cannot sleep. I am so mad at this boy.. I don't want to babysit him any more. My husband thinks that is extreme...I do not trust this child around the dog again. Is it wrong for me to feel like this? |
Hello, I am so sorry about your baby. I have two 4month old puppies and I can only imagine. First thing I would do is ofcourse take her to the vet ASAP as you plan to do. After I find out what the vet says and what the charges are I would contact the parent and ask them to repay you for the damages HER son caused. It is totally unacceptable for this boy to go unpunished for hurting an innocent pet. This could lead to more serious problems in the future for him. I PRAY that she is not seriously injured and will only need some rest to recooperate. She will probably be afraid of the deck for a while so patience is key to her recovery and trauma. I'm curious why your son didn't stop him or is he young too. Good Luck and God Bless... Sharon, PIXI & Spike.. |
I woulddso be pissed off, there is no reason for this child to do this crap, this boy 5 years old or not has some issues. I would let this boy in my home again and I would talk to the parents, Im pissed as well, your poor baby. This child would not like it if someone had thrown him off of the deck. I hope your baby is okay, you are not over reacting trust me. |
I really hope your puppy is okay and its nothing serious. I would talk to the parents and see what they have to say about it. I personally would not babysit him anymore, God only know what he'll do next. At 5 years old he should know better. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
hope the furbaby is ok, I myself never let a child hold my pup that was under the age of about 10, they could pet them, but my protection was for the furbaby that would be helpless against children. I agree the parents of that child should pay your vet bills, wouldn't doubt they then might want to break off you watching their kid.. Hope too you talked to your child after this happened. Their lessons they need to understand in what is right and what isn't accepted. |
I am so sorry :(but he is 5 years old and should not have been unattended for a minute, but it's NOT your fault, I think this child needs to be talked to immediately and told that that what he did was the wrong thing to do. Did you speak to the parents, did you speak to him? I have done the same thing many times, watched from an open door and nothing happened we all have done this so it's not your fault. I pray your little baby will be ok :(. A 5 year old does not have the full understanding of what he did, he probably knows it was wrong from everyone's reaction, but he doesn't understand the severity of what he did. If you don't feel comfortable with watching anymore then I wouldn't, unless your going to be hands on with him when you are watching him. The child definitely needs to be talked to and I hope he was. It takes 30 seconds for things to go wrong, I know I have been there. prayers and thoughts for your little baby and you. |

A 5yr old with any decent upbringing would know better than to do such a bratty thing, if i had been in your place i would have introduced him to a good ass whipping and promised another if he even looked at my helpless baby Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
No, I don't think your feelings are extreme. However it was a 5 year old child and unfortunately should've never be left unsupervised with puppy. Dogs can tolerant a great deal of pain so it's not unusual for her not to yelp if she has a broken bone. Let's hope not. Sending prayers. |

You don't hit anyone's child not even your own, Violence only meets violence  |
First, I would like to say I am so sorry your dog was hurt. I hope the news at the vet is good. It is a terrible thing when they are hurt and you are waiting to get to a vet to find out the extent. If you watch this child, I am sure you have cautioned him many times about being gentle with the dog etc. He needs a serious talking to about the consequences of his actions and find out WHY he did such a thing. The parents, if they are decent people, should offer to pay for the vet expenses. There is no valid reason for this child's behavior, at any age. Back in the day (I am showing my age) we never dreamed of doing some of the things you hear kids doing today. Don't beat yourself up, you had no idea this child was going to do something crazy. I have a strict rule, my two grandchildren know they are never allowed to pick up the dogs. They would never intentionally hurt them but too many things can happen. It is so easy to drop them, I worry about adults sometimes. Just when I think I may overreact, I read your stories such as yours. :( |
I am so sorry!! First off, I've been around many many 5 year olds and have never heard of such a thing! A 5 year old should entirely know better than to THROW a living thing, let alone a dog, off a deck. That's ridiculous. Especially, you say, this boy comes over once a week. He should know how to treat a dog. Ahh that makes me so mad. |

BUT, as I stated above, all the five year olds I know would never even think of doing such a thing. And to the OP watching through the window... that's a totally normal thing to do, especially with a five year old. If he had been younger (under 2) I would understand this happening more. When they're five, you don't have to keep your eye 24/7 as they're supposed to be old enough to do certain activities on their own. That's the age they start kindergarten. |

I am very sorry for what happen to you puppy. Hopefully it is only a only a pull muscle. Is a 5 years old responsible of is act? It is debatable. I would a try to teach him the consequence of his act. Physic correction are a big no no... I you baby sit him again, make sure not to leave the dog alone with him, obviously... Let us know how t when at the vet... |
OP I'm really sorry this happened to your puppy, and I would definitely get him to the vet asap to make sure everything is ok. I also don't know how long you have been watching this child and what his normal behavior has been, and it would be up to you based on your experience if you should keep watching him. I would have his parents talk to him about it . I hope your furbaby is ok. |
As we ALL know if a yorkie wants out of our arms they will bolt...seems they have no fear. My Mother used to watch Sadie for me when she was a puppy. My Mom was holding her, Sadie was about 12 weeks old, Sadie decided she wanted to get down. She bolted out of my Moms arms and landed on the floor on her side and let out a yelp. My Mom was so upset. THANK GOD! Sadie was ok but, my Mom was shaking...I don't let ANY child hold my girls...even now and they are adult dogs. Maybe this little boy didn't throw her...maybe she jumped. I don't believe you should hit anyones child...Even though he is 5 he should no better not to hurt ANYTHING...However he is "5 yrs old"...I would have sat him down and explained to him what he did was wrong and that he should NEVER do anything like that again to ANY animal. I would have NEVER left the puppy outside with the children. These little guys can get into so much trouble on their own. I hope and pray that your little furgirl is going to be ok. |

It seems most people on YT are not for selling to anyone with children this is a very good example of why and i agree 100% Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
I do hope your little pup is fine after the vet checks him over. Poor puppy. I have raised 3 children and at the age of 5 years old a child, under normal upbringing should be responsible for his/her actions. Any 5 yrs old that does not know it's bad to throw a living creature off a deck or even would want to has some sort of problem. Most children would cry at seeing an animal hurt, at least mine would. For heavens sake my granddaughter was three when I bought Buddy and she was with me. She was so gentle to him and touched him with such love and caring it touched my heart. It's apparent to me that this child has never been around animals and has not been taught what is right or wrong. As far as leaving a 5yrs old out in the yard to play I see nothing wrong with it. My children played in our yard with a friend while I was keeping an eye out from the house, of course. In some families 5yr olds take care of smaller siblings! If your child at the age of 5 is not responsible enough to know right from wrong you better get moving and teach him. Are you saying that a five year old would not know the difference of slapping or throwing an infant off the bed? To me it's the samething. This boy is either spoiled rotten or just get's away with anything he wants due to lack of guidance from his parent's. These kids are the ones who cause trouble down the road. I would most diffenately have a talk with his parents. I would also never allow this child around the puppy until he get's some dissapline and if the money is needed I would continue to baby sit him but keep a watchful eye out for anything else he might do. I do hope your puppy will not be tramatized by this. Saying a prayer that he will be alright. |
What a horrible accident. I honestly don't think you should expect the parents of the little boy to pay for any vet expenses. The incident happened in your home while he was in your care. I don't know how high your deck is, but they could be upset with you for letting their child out there unsupervised. Please update us after you take your puppy to the vet. |
