Tootsy has hurt herself - advice please anyone Tootsy was very quiet when she woke up today and did not want to play or run around. We thought at first that she might not have slept well and so did not feel concerned. We noticed that she was licking her paw so we had a look at it and it seemed absolutely fine. Later on in the morning she started to limp badly and by late afternoon she was not able to put that leg on the ground. She started to shiver so I wrapped her up and sat with her until she had stopped shivering. Now she is panting and the pad under her foot is swollen and I can see that her foot is red. I am so worried about the panting as it is so unusual. I have taken off the blanket but she is still panting and her little body feels hot. She is just lying down and not doing anything else. I keep encouraging her to drink water. This afternoon she ate her food and had her half cup of goats milk that I give her daily. I only have adult asprin and they are the soluable type and not buffered. Should I give her a tiny dose of one tablet? I am so worried as she got worse so quickly. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks. I will be taking her to the vet first thing in the morning when they open. Last edited by Franceen; 03-15-2009 at 12:52 PM.

| Poor baby. Sounds like she may have some kind of infection. I'm afraid she would just throw up the aspirin if you tried that. I know it's costly, but is there an emergency vet you could take her to today? If not, does your Vet accept emergency phone calls just to consult on steps you could take until the vet opens in the morning? I feel for you, and I hope it's not too serious. It's so hard to tell in these little ones what is an emergency and what could wait till morning.

Hi Franceen, I am so sorry to hear that Tootsy is on the injured list. I would also be a bit concerned about the panting. You might take her temp so see if that is caused by fever. It sounds like her pad is infected. Perhaps she got a sticker or some such stuck in her foot -- or maybe it's a bug bite. I know you mentioned that you were planning to take her to the vet in the morning - what time is it in your corner of the world? Would little Tootsy be willing to rest her paw on an ice pack? Just a thought.

Thanks so much for your replies. It is 9.07pm in the evening here. My vet does not do after hours consultations, but he gives you the phone number of a practice that does all his out of hours consultations! Unfortunately they charge the most outrageous prices and so is only for life threatening situations. As you say it is hard to tell sometimes what is a life threatening situation with these little ones. I have examined the foot and could not see anything in her paw. I will try the ice pack, Cindy, and see if she will let me put her paw on it. I have a feeling that she won't though, but I am going to try. What is worrying me is how quickly she has got worse. Should I try the aspirin?

Update? Fanceen, how is little Tootsy's tootsie doing? I sincerely hope that she is all better by now. I got to thinking, could it have been a spider bite?

After a restless night, I took Tootsy to the vet this morning. She was in such a state, shaking and panting, that he decided to sedate her. I held her until she was asleep and then we had to leave her at the vets and come back in three hours. I have never left her that long before and I was so worried. She was dumped by her original owners and then by the next ones, so I think she must feel very insecure when she is left anywhere. The longest I have left her with anyone is under 2 hours and then she went missing!! Anyway, we got back to the vet in the afternoon and he told us that the paw is infected and there appears to be some eczema in between her toes, where she has been licking, which is raw and weeping. He has given her an antibiotic injection and also some painkillers by injection. I have to give her two lots of medication - one for 5 days and the other for 7 days. I am going to look up on the net to see if I can find out what they are - I know one is an antibiotic. I think the other might be a steriod? She has slept most of the day and has not had anything to eat or drink!!! This concerns me - shouldn't she at least drink some water? But I suppose I cannot force her to drink! The vet also trimmed her nails, while she was under, and cleaned her teeth. I was so pleased that he did this, as I have been meaning to get her teeth done, and she puts up such a fight when you try to cut her nails. Cindy, it may well have been a spider bite - he says that he cannot say for sure what caused the infection, but the treatment would be the same, whatever caused it, he said. I was so concerned that they might have to operate on her paw and was relieved to find that this wasn't necessary. I have had such a stressful day. I had little sleep, as Tootsy was so restless, and when I got up I found that the central heating and hot water boiler were not working! My husband phoned a plumber before we left and he came around and fixed it. Then my bank phoned to say that someone was fraudulently taking large sums money out of our account and they have put a stop to all transactions, until it is sorted out! So now we will have to go into the bank with identification, to draw out cash for a couple of weeks, while they sort it out!! How inconvenient is that! Thankfully the account had not been frozen, before I paid the vet! That would have been embarrassing!! I am going to have a nice hot bath now and then go to bed. I have had enough for one day! At least my baby is now been treated and is not in so much pain. I am sure she will sleep well tonight. Thanks for all your support and help. luv Yvonne xxx Last edited by Franceen; 03-16-2009 at 01:51 PM.
