Your current vet is probably a great vet, but a lot of vets don't see a lot of rare conditions in practice and therefor not be able to correctly diagnose it. A board certified internal medicine specialist will have more training and experience with less common and more serios conditions. If your vet really doesn't have an idea of what it could be it's best to refer you go a specialist |

I sure hope the wee guy feels better soon. It's breaking my heart!:( |
wow, thanks for all the responses. I understand this is hard to watch, and its hard for us here also. I want to set you all at a little ease though. This is the worst that it got. Since being on the meds he only has this kind of episode once a day and it is dramatically not as severe. I wanted to post it as it was before medications in hopes that someone might know what it could possibly be. Since being on meds it IS GETTING BETTER. I know it is killing you all to watch and I know you all care so that is why I am posting now to tell you he is no longer in that much pain. As soon as the vet saw it he did say he needed meds and he has since been getting better. I posted it at its worst just so you can see it without meds, with meds its not as bad, please don't worry :) he isn't in the pain like in that video any longer. I hate to think that I have any of you out there in tears...I will try to post another video of him soon so that you can all see him as he is not instead of just at his worst. I hate that I am worrying you all so much. With as many people as there are on these boards I was hoping that someone could shed light on it and you all have, I can now ask about stenosis at the next vet visit. OH and also, the vet did mention the nerve damage as well. In which case the meds is all he can do and that is why he is on the meds. He said that "the prednisone will help the inflammation around the possible damaged nerves and the butorph will help the pain, and if the nerves aren't the problem then at least the butorph would help ease the pain of whatever is causing it" the vets words exactly, he too thinks we need an ultrasound and that is what we are doing now, looking for the right vet. I posted this all so that I could go in with some recommendations for tests, possibilites of what it can be, and also just some support. I was so intent on putting in all details that I left some out and am sorry for that!! |
When I worked in Gastro as a Dr asst. We would on occasion have patients that were constipated, yet still had watery stools. We had to do impaction removals they were hard as rocks. So he may have something similar to that! I hope you do find the problem soon! |
The actual poo wasn't very big... at least compared to my Ginger's. Hers is at least twice that big. That's why I thought he may still be constipated and is having a hard time pushing it out. When my toddler had some constipation issues, it was smaller pieces and hurt her to push them. Then eventually there would be one big one. Just a thought. I'm not an expert by any means. There has been some excellent advice posted here. I really feel for you. I'm glad Thor is doing better on the meds and I hope there is a speedy resolution for you all!! |
I can only imagine how horrible this is for you to go through, let alone your pup. This is sad and i know he's doing better now. We are all here for support. Please keep us posted on what the Dr. says and what the plan of care will be. This is how we can learn, and identify in case this happens to one of us. I wish you well and hope you baby is doing better.:) |
Poor pup. My next step would also be imaging tests to see if it is structual. I also think stenosis of the colon is at the top of the list. |
That literally broke my heart. I feel terrible for that baby and yourself. Please take your baby to a different vet as soon as possible:( I couldn't take that crying, it would kill me inside. I would personally walk into every vet I knew until someone had the answers as to what it is going on. Please update when you can Sending so many prayers and good thoughts |
I feel so sorry for Thor and yourself. My little ones ran to their bed listening to poor Thor cry. I hope the new meds help him. Keep us all updated! WELCOME TO YT!!!! |
Just checking in to see if there is any new news about the baby. I hope that he is doing better. This just seems so heartbreaking. I have to agree with the others that it may be some obstruction or stenosis of the colon or further up into the intestine. Please keep us posted about how he is doing. |
Hey everyone...I finally heard back from one of the vets...because I called HIM. He had seen the video and said he will not see Thor, that there is nothing he can do. Have called 3 of the other vets since and they will not see him either. They have recommended another Vet in a bigger city. (2 hours away from me) and I have sent them the video as they requested. Hopefully someone can help. The vets I talked to say it is one of 3 things. 1. His opening is too small and there is no "fix" for it. He will live in pain with bowel movements his whole life. 2. Nerve damage internally. No repair possible. Again, he will live in this pain his whole life. 3. A mass internally, operation possible but chances of survival slim. I am sad, upset, scared...anything you can imagine...I can't see letting him live in this pain his whole life and the vets themselves said there is barely a chance a puppy that small can survive a surgery on his bowels to remove a mass. The risks are HUGE they said and some vets won't even attempt it. So what am I to do if a vet won't even help him...I am just sad and mad right now. |
Please keep the faith... What is the closest Teaching Vet University by You???? Please....let's find a way   He deserves a chance...I know you love him :( |

I am not sure about the closes teaching vet school but the vets i talked to today said to email the video the Memphis Tn to a place called MED VET. They said that they have the most high tech equipment possible so we will see. They did say that they have to agree to see him before we take him so hopefully they will agree to see Thor and we can fix him. |
I am sorry to hear what the vets told you. I hope you keep the faith. Poor Thor. Also isn't the U of Tenn in Knoxville supposed to be a great vet school???? Keep us posted. And I hope everyone is reading that this video was made before he was on meds and that it is not as bad. It just seems like people are starting to attack you as if you are doing nothing to try to help little Thor.... |
Thank you for keeping us posted. I can't get little Thor out of my mind. I am sending YT prayers your way :hands: and a big hug to you also as I know this has to be so stressful...I can't imagine...my heart goes out to you...:( |
thank you...that was sort of how I felt. We have tried everything possible in our area to help him. Getting the video out was my line to the world...begging for help. What good is the video going to be though if they don't see how it was without meds? I understand how they might feel as if I was doing nothing though...there are some pet owners out there that simply don't care and come to these sites for NON VET advice in hopes of avoiding the costs. That's not me...I just wanted advice in order to avoid unneeded stress on Thor, who is timid enough as it is. I am doing what I can, giving him meds, keeping his bowels loose, and loving him...I guess it is up to the vets now to find what is wrong. |
I know that this is a long shot, but have you sent your video to the Tufts Vet Hospital in Mass? Since they handle everything in the world, and also have the university there also. They may happen to know what is the problem with your baby. I checked out their web site and they also have a pain clinic. Maybe you can send the video, and they may know what is the problem with the baby, and send information to your vet. I don't know but its worth a shot |
OK I just sent them an email...Thank you Key... And again i can't thank you all enough for you thoughts.... |
From a person that had constipation(TMI sorry) in the past FROM TAKING Prednisone and other steroid injections(bad back).and pain meds.. the small size of his poop makes me wonder... Are you sure he is not impacted? have you tried something like Laxatone Laxative? It tastes good to them... If you have an impaction you do have loose watery fluids that squeeze out...I apologize if this has been already addressed, but after seeing the video I felt so bad for your little guy I couldnt concentrate on all the postings... butorphanol is an opiates so be careful dosing him..I'm surprised he has been this so long? Steroids/ Prednisone Side Effects in Dogs/Cats • Systemic side effects to corticosteroids are generally dependent on dose and duration of treatment. Short-term use of prednisone is unlikely to cause adverse effects. Adverse effects are more common in animals on immunosuppressive doses. • Side effects seen in dogs include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, poor haircoat, GI disturbance, diarrhea, vomiting, weight gain, GI ulceration, pancreatitis, lipidemia, elevated liver enzymes, diabetes mellitus, muscle wasting, and possible behavioral changes. • Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia may be seen in dogs even on short-term therapy. • Although cats are less likely to develop side effects than dogs, occasionally polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight gain, GI disturbances and behavioral changes occur. • Corticosteroids can cause or worsen gastric ulcers. |
You are doing a good job - we know you love and care for your baby. I think you should contact the University of Tenn - they are an excellent teaching vet school with high technology. Here are some other things: Maybe look into a Raw food diet. I say this, because a raw food diet produce very, very little waste (poop) - maybe 1 time a day (or 2) and very very small. (Nature's Variety is a good brand) Also, maybe ask your Vet about getting him to write you an Rx for Lactulose. You can get this filled at Walmart or Costco (bigger bottle for cheap). Anyway, they give lactulose to dogs with liver issues. The reason why is, Lactulose binds to toxins (those meds he is taking and poop toxins) in the body and rids them thru elimination. And the waste produced from Lactulose is like soft ice cream - so that may be very helpful to your baby. And the lactulose is not harmful for him.... Please keep us posted and let us know if there is anything at all we can do to help you get to the bottom of this :( |
I couldn't watch the whole thing...Mimi started freaking out & is still barking...this goes on for more than a minute??!! I'm so sorry little Thor is going through this & your family has to suffer w/him. I hope you'll find answers soon. |
Thank you Mackymom and TLC. :) your thoughts are appreciated Mackymom...I am an MT (medical transcriptionist) in training. That training had me instantly looking up the side effects, dosages and all the other information about those meds...That is why it is so important to me to get him off of them as soon as possible. I have watched for all of the side effects and dose him VERY carefully. I want to thank you for taking the time to look up all of that for me though :) TLC, since he has been on his Meds and the canned food, his poop is the consistency of soft ice cream right now. The vet also thought it could be impaction but felt NOTHING in there and after even having VERY soft (not liquid) poop he still has this reaction. Thats when he put him on the meds. He said the same as you, if it was impaction it would have been either REALLY hard, or REALLY runny but his is just the consistency of ice cream and he goes multiple times a day. I am welcoming ANY advice....and I will try to take the time (with researching for school and doing medical reports for that, researching for a clue to what Thor has, and 3 kids, my time is stretched) to answer each suggestion to a reason it either didn't work or why i haven't tried it before. |
Oh how sad. Did you show this tape to the breeder? If so, what did she say? I hope someone can find the cause of this and get your little one feeling better, that just broke my heart |
Hi, Yes we did show the video to the breeder and told her about what he was doing and she too has never seen this before and she has been breeding yorkies and poodles for many years. I got an email back from Tufts in Mass. They said they have never seen it and recommend me doing what I am already doing. Just emailing the video out and hoping for some light to turn on the situation. |
Here is my vet's email. She is a graduate of University Of Penn Veterinary. One of the best in the US. Maybe she will know what is wrong. vetmedleb@yahoo.com I just feel so bad for little Thor.... Good Luck! |
Thank you KJ...I emailed your vet with the video and background history of Thor. |

I hope Thor gets some help soon. |
I hope someone can help your little one soon. I agree with Wylies Mom that maybe a CT/MRI/US should be done to try and see if it is structural. He is able to poo, it seems as though it is a matter of why it is causing so much pain to do so. Has your current vet done the ultrasound? |
