| Yorkie diet Hi everyone! I posted a similiar letter earlier but I think I did it under the wrong area. So, here it is again. My little Emma has been back and forth to my vet's clinic and to Tufts University. She has had very high bile acid test results (6 blood tests!). She will return to Tufts for the scintigraphy test the 2nd week of March. The ultrasound done in Januarydid not show a liver shunt and the Tufts doctor is sure she does not have one. She is as active as ever, does noy look sick and is eating well. Since she became ill in December, she is eating Iams low residue kibble---a 1/4 cup 2x a day. A little fresh cooked white chicken tender meat is added. Prior to getting sick, she ate EVO kibble (by Innova) with the chicken and raw carrots added. The Evo is a high protein kibble. Both my yorkie girls ate it and the one who is not "sick" still eats it! What does everyone feed their yorkies? Is the Evo too high in protein for a yorkie? It is a premium food which was never on the "recall" list last year. Can a higher protein kibble make a yorkie sick? Please advise. I always appreciate the advice I get on this site. DAB |

| If Emma has a shunt or MVD, a high protein food like Evo will not work for her. She needs a food with no more than about 22% protein if she has no symptoms, less if she is symptomatic. Animal proteins produce ammonia which gets into the system of a liver compromised dog. Red meat is the worst and should be avoided. This is a great article about nutrition for dogs with liver disease: Liver | B-Naturals.Com Newsletter There a a couple of excellent premium foods on the market that are low protein and may work for Emma: Holistique Blendz Adult Dog (fish) WELLNESSŪ - Healthy Dog and Cat Food |

| i like to stick to science diet or royal Canin and if they do not like to eat it as much i feed purina PROPLAN small breed formula, they love to eat that and i never had problems with it. I would think that a very high protein food is not good for yorkies, if you research more on the breed and how delicate their digestive system is anyways it could make my idea make more sense to you. I used to feed Royal Canin only, but that food is a bit too rich and i find they do not eat enough, never had problems with it but my guys used to be lighter in weight, now they eat the proplan, you can touch the kibble and you will notice that has less fat in it, they like to eat it a little more and i found they keep a little bit more weight just because they eat some more of it, coat is great and shiny, more playful , the science diet is the food my vet recommends... and i tried but they absolutely do not eat it, they eventually eat some if they are starving , but just enough to get by.... I hope this can give you some insights and some light in your questions towards too rich of a food for a yorkie. Good Luck with your baby, hope it gets better soon and this turns out to be nothing.
