Please help!!!! I had to give gia cpr!!
 

OH my god!!! Gia had her last puppy shots today... well besides the rabies, I was writing on here in my living room about frontline being harmful (as I read) relaxing in the living room with a nice cozy fire, we had just let Mia and Gia out to the bathroom, when all of a sudden my husband tripped on Gia!

It happened right next to me. I heard her let out a cry and immediately picked her up. She was unresponsive. She stiffened up and I don't remember seeing her eyes. I think they were back in her head!!! It then appeared she was seizing. She stiffened up and was in the fetal position and was stiff. She stopped breathing!!! I called her name, started freaking out and grabbed my cell phone to call the vet. The have the emergency vets number on their machine. I didn't know it. I then handed the phone to my husband and began to give Gia cpr. Gia started to breath once I did this and continued on her own very little and I gave about 2 big breaths, mouth to mouth. My husband didn't get far with calling the vet instead he started to get dressed to take her to the vet. I grabbed my fur coat wrapped Gia in it to keep her warm. I ran to the car. We rushed 30 min away in a blizzard with our hazard lights on going through red lights to get her there. I called them and told them what happened and that we were on our way. We made it there in 20 min.

I had them check all her blood which is all normal. He said she was a little dehydrated(I keep water and lots of food and treats out for her at all times). I had them do x rays of every part of her body, even her skull. The vet said everything is normal, no broken bones. He said he isn't ruling out the shots she had today. I told them no lepto at the vet and they confirmed. He also said most likely Gia had a seizure because of the shock from my husband tripping on her, or from the vaccines. She is unbalanced and seems lethargic, not herself to me. He said that she is stable. She is hooked up to an iv and is being given steroids and water for the dehydration.

I gave her a bunch of nutrical today. Soft food, hard food, and a ton of treats. This little girl eats and gains nothing. She weighs 2 pounds and is 16 weeks. I have had her a whole month and she hasn't gained a pound.

They are keeping her over night and I wanted to stay and they wouldn't let me. I feel like such a bad mother. I am so sad. I cannot believe this happened. I am devastated. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Do you think she will be ok?

Poor Gia. I hope she is feeling better tomorrow. Your hubby must feel horrible. :(

He does, we both were crying. We are very responsible yorkie owners. Our other yorkie Mia is 4yrs old and nothing like this has ever happened. It can happen to anyone I keep telling him. I feel horrible and sad.:(

It is 3 am and I am going back to the vet right now, I cannot sit here and I definitely cannot sleep.

I'm sending Prayers from Pa. to Gia, You and your Hubby. I always have my Vets give their shots in 1/2 doses. It costs a little more, But I worked for a Vet for 3 years and know little dogs can seizure really easily. Even when I adopted my girls, They were 3 1/2 mons. and 4 1/2 months , I asked the Dr. to give their shots 1/2 dose @ a time. I wasn't their fav. Mother, But, It worried me too much that something would happen to them. I also had them put them in their arms and not their legs. They really hated seeing me!!!! Tell your Hubby it was an accident. They're very little and are easy to step on. Saturday Night my Hubby stepped on Baron's back foot in the dark. Baron screamed and ran head first into the door. He was really scared and limping for 30 mins. I stayed up with him a few hours. He fell asleep in my arms while I was typing on YT. I'd wake him every 30 mins. and call his name, until he reacted then I left him fall back to sleep. I think he was just in shock?shook up and scares more than he was hurt!!! Rory felt terrible. I told him accidents happen and thank God it wasn't anything more serios. I think he was as shook up as Baron was!! Please keep us up to date on Gia's condition... I am so sorry to hear about poor Gia and your hubby as well. Please tell him it was an accident and these little guys get under your feet before you know it. I hope she is doing better this morning, and that you are as well. Please let us know how she is.:love-hug3and :hands::hands:

You are an INCREDIBLE Mother - you SAVED HER LIFE, my dear! You truly did. You gave her breath again and did everything correct in a crisis. Please do not beat yourself up.

It sounds like it was a combo of a couple different things, neither of which were anyone's fault. These babies are very strong and can heal very quickly - so try to stay positive and know that we're pulling for your baby.

My Marcel was very tiny at 16 wks as well (1lb 4oz) - his growth spurts were later (as seems typical of some tinies) and he is now 3lbs and healthy. One thing we did is put a collar w/ a bell on it so we could hear him at all times. Of course, we never use/used that collar for leashing (harness for that). When he was little, we took the collar off whenever we were not there - and put it on as soon as we were home. He now wears his collar 24/7 (as does Wylie) with his bell and I.D. tag. To properly fit a collar for a tiny, you really only want to fit a pinky-tip btwn the collar and her neck - you do not want it too loose as that's unsafe.

I hope you update with good news. ALL the best to little Gia. :)

How scary! Prayers that Gia will be okay!

When she recovers, have your vet do a bile acids test to make sure she doesn't have a liver shunt. I'm concerned since you said she hasn't gained weight in a month. Dogs with shunts can have bad reactions to vaccinations. Yorkies are more prone to shunts than any other breed, so they should all be screened with bile acids tests after 20 weeks old.

I hope she lives through this. It was horrible to watch her go through that. I will not be well if there is a bad result in the end. They will call me the crazy dog lady :( MY dogs mean EVERYTHING to me.

Thank you so much. You and your husband were very lucky. So far we have paid almost $700 for Gia's stay. I am thinking it maybe a lot more though. I want them to do what ever they have to do to save her. I don't care if I end up homeless on the street. :(

I was panicking and believe it or not the first thing I thought to do was call 911, because to me Gia is a person, my baby. I was very frantic for a minute. My husband was even worse. Then I said to myself . . this is not going to save Gia. Pull it together Heather, and think. Thats when I realized I need to be checking her pulse & breathing. I observed Gia was not breathing. As soon as I started the mouth to mouth she gasped for air. I waited a second to see even she could breath and she did faintly. I gave her another breath, that time a little more. She picked up from there. Her chest rattled a bit when she started breathing on her own. It was like something was in there.

In the car she started to move and I thought she was coming out of it and was going to be better. Then when we had about 10 more minutes to get there she got really weak and her breathing was very faint. I monitored her pulse the whole way and this slowed down too. Through out this when I would move her to keep her conscious she would let out little whimpers. :cry:

I am keeping my fingers crossed for her recovery. I will do this test, for sure. Thank you for the great advice.

Wow!! You are an amazing mommy!!! I give you and your husband massive amounts of credit for saving your babies life with CPR, and then by rushing her to the vet and insisting they do whatever they can to save her.

I wonder if she began seizing before your hubby tripped over her and that's why she couldn't get out of the way?

About her weight- Ryder was 18 ounces @ 8 weeks, then held steady at 20 ounces between 12 and 16 weeks. He was stuck at 2.5lbs from 6-9 months, and now weighs 2.8 at 15 months and is in perfect health!

Please keep updating about Gia, but I think due to you and your husband's quick actions, she will fully recover. Prayers to you and your family!

I went back to the vet...
 

When I went back to the emergency vet they were pretty rude. I walked in and a different girl greeted me, I told her I was Gia's mommy. I told her I didn't feel right not being there and leaving Giavanna. She said ok, I'll be right back. Then really loudly my husband and I heard "They aren't coming back here"!! I never asked to go in the back in the first place.

The girl comes back with Gia in her arms wrapped in a blanket. I told her that what the other girl had said was pretty rude and also asked if it was safe she was taking her off of the iv . . I didn't want her to unhook Gia from the iv's. Because the girl said she would be fine, I held her and then she came back about 5 minutes later to take her in the back. I ended up staying there all night and seeing her every two hours for 5 minutes. I brought her a soft bed, blankets, and a squeaky teddy bear.

Gia was weak. Gia was alert, but she wasn't her normal self and wouldn't really react to her teddy bears squeak. She would open her eyes though. I believe one of her pupils were dilated also. I left at around 8:30 am and when I came home the Dr. called at 9 am and said that she can stand now, that she took a few steps but is leaning to the right side :( She isn't eating but is peeing. He said she may have a headache and not want to eat. Which made sense because she was hiding her eyes away from the light into the blanket when I was holding her. I get migraines where the light hurts my eyes all of the time. I cannot eat or listen to ANYTHING, it all hurts.

I slept for 2 hours and woke up at 11:30 and called them and they said that Gia still isn't eating but her pupils are normal now. That Gia is just resting. I have to call the Dr. at 6:30 pm or 7pm.

This is exactly what we are talking about right now. Very good point, that is why I told the vet no lepto and no rabies for a couple weeks after these shots. I had given Gia frontline when we came home from her shots by the injection site. The emergency vet isn't ruling the meds out. What if the coldness from the snow outside cause her to freeze up along with those shots. It was all very weird because my husband caught himself as he tripped. He said he didn't step on her, but nudged her with the top of his toes and foot. The room was dark with dark carpet, there was only the light from the fire place. The only thing was she did let out a cry. She is very smart and she always moves out of the way. She is very fast too. We aren't sure what exactly happened. At the time we thought it was from my husbands trip but now who knows.

Also . . .she has a collar with the animal saint charm on it to keep her safe. Our other dog Mia has one too and was blessed by our priest, but Gia hasn't been yet. They usually have them on and they sound like a bell. She didn't have hers on at this time! :( That is the ONLY reason they have collars. I use harnesses as well.

I just called the emergency vet at 2:26 pm and they said Gia did eat.

Gia is in our thoughts and prayers and you and hubby too of course!

I just read your post...more thoughts and prayers coming from Long Island for little Gia and your whole family. You reacted well, and saved Gia's life!!

It sounds like she is making improvements, and that is definitely good! I hope she will continue to get better, so you can take her home soon.

It must be scary not knowing exactly what happened, and why. With all the causes, I hope your husband isn't blaming himself any more. Even if it had been his tripping over her, which it sounds like it wasn't, that's just too difficult to avoid at times. No matter how careful we try to be, they are small and they are fast.

Please continue with the updates as you get them. We are all pulling for Gia!

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I will keep her in my prayers. As far as Er vets, unfortunately I have had way to many visits to ours. Most of the vets dealt with were great, There was one male one that I could not stand. He always acted to me like he was thinking "well what do you expect when you get a Yorkie. I actually refused to see him one time and told them why, and waitied for the other er vet, and once refused to leave Cali one night opting to take her home and watch her rather than leave her with him. Other than him they were all great.

Thank you I called the vet they said she hasn't ate since 1 pm. I didn't ask if they tried feeding her from what it sounded like they only offered her food at 1 pm, and she ate it. They said the same thing 2 hours before. They told me not to go there until I talk to the Dr. at 7 pm. I am going there now. Oh Well, it's my baby!! She probably isn't eating enough b/c she doesn't like their cheap food. She is a picky eater. I am bringing her the good stuff. I will keep you all posted. I hope she will recover :cry:

You did all the right things to save your Gia. your an amazing Yorkie parent ! Gia is in the best of care right now, and this is what is the most important. I agree that it is hard to tell exactly what caused this incident to happen. Most importantly, Gia has a chance , and is making progress ! CPR is what saved her.
