Thanks for the update. Glad to hear Kate is doing better and she is even growing hair again!

Well, we have had her dipped a total of 3 times now with two weeks between dips and here is how the progression went
First two weeks - huge decrease in itching and about day 12 my wife noticed hair regrowth everywhere.
Second two weeks Major hair regrowth. no more bad smell all is well.
Third two weeks. We take her to the vet to get dipped again and she dips her and says we won't need to bring her back unless anything changes. We had noticed a bump on her that was exactly the same as the first bumps that started all this mess. She said don't worry about it unless they get worse. well, here we are towards the end of the third two weeks and she has had a total of 8 new bumps.

This is very upsetting to me because I don't think it is the red mange causing the bumps. I think whatever caused the bumps cause the decline in her immune system which allowed the mange to thrive. I am taking her back to the vet as soon as they are open again to see what they say. If she says it's the mange i will most likely ask her not to do anything but rather take her to a dermatoligist. It's upsetting because i am close to $800 into this endeavor and i feel like i am back to square one.

[QUOTE=davebloomer;2290774]This issue started 5 or 6 months ago as a few bumps on her lower back looking like pimples. They didn't bother her but multiplied in a couple of days from 2 bumps to maybe 50 so we went to the vet. he diagnosed it as some allergy and gave her a steroid pill and antibiotic. didn't help anything. if anything made it worse so we went back. he changed her diet and again no results. after about 5 trips we picked a new vet. all he was doing was giving her more

What food do you feed?

So i know kates problem isn't from a genetically weak immune system. about 2 weeks after we very first got kate she was maybe 10 weeks old and she got beat up by our other yorkie and almost died. she had a sugar low and was very stiff also got a bacterial infection at the same time. I knew then that we would probably end up having some problems with her. He did offer to help on my vet bills even though i made it very clear it wasn't anything that was his fault. of course i declined but i had mentioned i would be buying another female from him in the future and he told me he would give it to me @ half price. pretty honorable if you ask me. He told me they have been breeding yorkies for 10 years and only had to replace 1 puppy. they have over 30 females... so that is a lot of puppies each year.

anyway update on kate.. since the dip she is itching like crazy and pulled out more hair than ever :-( the vet said she would be itchier than ever so i guess she's on track
30 females!!! Do they have a full time staff? I know you stated they are friends of yours but that is alot of dogs and I would be really wondering if it is humanly possible to take good care of that many dogs with out a full time staff. I am just saying this because you said you would buy another dog from them. I would think long and hard about that and look into other breeders.
I hate to sound mean but all I keep picturing is a ton of little dogs in little cages.

they take good care of them. i just looked at their site and it says 50 females and 6 stud dogs. They have very nice big indoor/outdoor cages and they rotate dogs that stay inside the house with them. The females go to work with them when pregnant, and then the puppies and females go with them until the puppies are sold. They also have playgrounds set up in their yards to let them out in. I don't see any difference in keeping 1 dog in a kennel while at work than keeping 50 dogs in a kennel while at work.

1 dog gets attention every day. 10 dogs could get attention every day. 56! ? Have they done genetic testing on them? I won't post on this again I just have a hard time thinking of dogs being kept like cattle. I personally wouldn't encourage it by buying a puppy from them.

I dont have a problem with the way they do things. You would need to see their setup before judging. Actually, no you wouldn't.. just don't buy from them. They never have a puppy past 3 months which means they are doing something right. He told me most puppies are sold by 2-4 weeks but of course not released that early, and for months before christmas there is a waiting list.

anyway i won't comment on this again either as it has nothing to do with my yorkies problems, and it is all speculation.

Default much better

My little kate is doing very well now. All her hair is growing in and her skin is back to flesh color underneath. no more black ulcer skin.
the hair has grown in darker than the rest of her hair but is finally starting to come in lighter underneath. No bumps anymore either.

What does your dog eat?? Many dogs have allegies to grains as all dogs do not have the enzyme amylase as we humans do that help us break down carbs. Orijen is a grain free, high protein diet. My dog is on that and is doing amazing. I also use Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Shampoo and Earthbath Creme Rinse and Conditioner. All natural products and very gentle.

Good Luck!

Oh, Kate looks wonderful! Look at all that fur!

I am so happy she was diagnosed correctly and she able to get the correct medicine. What a great furdad you are for doing all the research and getting her the medical help she needed.

Just like Kate, when Piccolo's hair started growing in from her problem, it was also darker than the rest of her hair. It has also starting to change colors.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the happy news!

Thanks for all your help too. It was all the info i got from you that got me going to a different vet to view other possibilities! We are so happy to have a healthy dog again.

Default Thanks to all of you

First I would like to say that I am new to Yorkie Talk... I joined to help with Potty Training. Recently, after my baby was groomed I noticed a bald spot in his hind leg. I didn't think anything of it because he was badly matted and my groomer is a dear friend of mine, so I trust her with my life. Days later I noticed some scabs in that area...wasn't sure what to think...Then I noticed a huge puss like scab on his spine...I had also noticed a bit of an odor to him as of late...I immediately thought of my yorkie talk buddies and researched here what it might be. I was leaning toward Mites...I contacted my vet and was seen last Friday...I went in with both barrels loaded....waiting to see what the vet said before "demanding" a skin scrap...My vet is extremely thorough if nothing else (usually her attention to detail is costly). She immediately said it could be one of three things.....1) ringworm 2) mites 3) I can't remember the other thing....Without flinching she said I need to do a skin scrap to determine our course of action..."YEAH FOR MY VET, SHE PASSED MY TEST"
Scrap revealed Demo Mange....he also had a minor bacterial infection from the Mange going untreated (tell me I don't feel guilty). We are treating him with Ivomec for the Mange and Cephalosporin antib for the bacteria....
After seeing everyone horror stories about misdiagnosis...I truely hope we are on the path to recovery......DAVEBLOOMER - I feel your pain......Is your baby all cured??

****Can anyone recommend something to bathe him to give him some comfort...He never really itched alot...it just looks so uncomfortable to me...He has not lost alot of hair, only the spot on his hind leg and you can only see it is you are looking for it*****

Interesting thing about the vet too is that I was considering switching vets because he needs to be neutured and they estimated the cost to be close to $500 because he has a destented testicle...we also have a golden retriever and a cat...so the vet bill gets a little out of control...but after this I am wondering if this a matter of "you get what you pay for"
