Marci the only thing I was able to learn last evening was this: First off sweetpotatoes are difficult to digest because of the high fiber, (but my girls eat it and so far no problems, but they only get it a couple times a month) not to feed high glycemic foods such as white breads, cheerios, (among 24 other cereals, but this one seems to be a favorite snack), Instant rice, jasmine rice, tapioca, watermelon, carrots instant potatoes, red skinned potato, russet potato, parsnips, pumpkin, white potatoes, corn pasta, rice pasta, and a few more but not what we feed our pets.
The good foods would be: coarse barley kernel, pumpernickel, whole grain, cereals; barley, buckwheat, bulgur, kellogg's All-Bran, Kellogg's Special K, muesli, non-toasted, old fashioned & oatmeal. Grains & Rice; barley buckwheat bulgur, long grain rice,& rye whole kernels. Fruits; apple, applesauce (no sugar) dried apricots, blackberries blueberries, peaches, pears, plums, prunes, pitted, raspberries, & strawberries. Vegetables; alfalfa, broccoli, celery, peas, green, snow peas, sugar snap peas & zucchini.
There are lots more but too many to mention all at once.

I think with the white fish, veggies & exercise, she will do beautifully! ;)

Oh Donna thank you so much!! good to know i'm on the right track until my appointment! I like the fruits you metioned... i wasn't sure WHAT she could have... thanks!!!

That is odd that they shouldn't be given sweet potato because of the fiber content. Dogs with pancreatitis problems should usually be on moderate to high fiber diets.

Marci, how many times a day is Layla fed?

That's good.
To regulate glucose, she should be fed less more often.
Two larger meals is probably not okay.

no she never eats a "large" meal.. lol... she snacks in the morning because she sleeps most of the morning.. then she might have a small meal around 2, 4, and then again around 8ish (when she is POOPED out from all the running she does in the house... she's a night time nut!) And then she gets her before bed snack.

I can tell you that Sissy eats just twice a day. Yogurt is breakfast (about a tablespoon) and The Honest Kitchen is dinner (1/4 cup). That is it except for the occasional Ziwi Peak treat or bite of banana.

Quinoa is an ingredient in The Honest Kitchen Thrive formula. I know Layla is a picky eater, but I currently have Thrive, Embark and Force formulas from THK. Would you like me to send you some samples??????

Smaller meals are probably better than large ones but the main thing it to make sure she is eating every little while so that her glucose stays stable (from what Google has to say), probably because of the diabetes concern with pancreatitis.

Wow what a great offer! :)

Jodie-where do I get HK again? I have been interested since the meetup in trying it, but can't find it...Sorry to go OT!

I agree though-see what your nutritionist says, Marci!

Gizmo's Mom 10-18-2008 04:37 AM

Oh Marci I am so sorry to hear Layla is going thru this. When Giz had it the first time I Basicly knew nothing about the whole "watch the fat" thing. I thought I was spoiling him making his own hamburger patties and leting him eat what I ate. I almost killed him.

When he left the hospital we were given carafate to coat his tummy before he ate and they gave him cans of Hill's i/d. He really didn't care for it. That's when I learned back then about making him the chicken and rice, which he had no problem with.

In the past couple of years he has had only one other attack, along with one bout of HGE. I am very careful to read everything about his food before I feed it to him. He has been on Chicken Soup for a couple of years and doing great with it. I steer clear of the Beggin Strips that he loved. Have found some peanut butter doggie biscuits at the feed store that you can buy by the pound..I swear he would kill for one of them.

I give him a scrambled egg on sundays and the occasional pieces of apple. Can't really go with a nutritionist but this has worked for us. This can be managed. I can promise that from now on you will be in the Poo Whatchers Club from now on. I swear my neighbors think I am nuts bending over to check out Gizmo's "business" :p.

Prayers for Layla and for you that you will soon find what works best just for her. Please keep us updated on her progress. Will be thinking about you both.

Marci, I forgot to tell you that when the vet was talking about further pancreas testing and possibly lowering the fat in Ellie's diet yesterday, she didn't say we had to go to prescription food...:)

It's the fiberous strings that are very difficult for them to digest. ;)

I think Layla is having a hard time adjusting to the fibre. She had gone over a year without any starch- just protein and veggies- her poop today was a bit soft... I also think the pumpkin treats could be doing this but they are only 1 or 2 treats that I ahve right now that are less than .5% fat so she gets them for a morning snack. Anyways... i'm hoping she adjust soon :) To break things up for her (she is REALLY not crazy about fish) she is getting oatmeal with about 1/5 of an egg and non fat yogurt- but i really want her to eat the fish so i'm trying to find something non fat to put on top to make it a bit more appealing for her... any thoughts?

Hi Suzy - here is their website. There is a store finder listed, but most of the time I order directly from them. They regularly have specials they will email you about. I have also found their food on Amazon!!!!!

Organic, Holistic Pet Food, Premium Pet Food - The Honest Kitchen

I'm sure you've already done this, but double check your yogurt label to make sure their is no artificial sweetener in it. Many non-fat yogurts have added sweeteners. We always go with the low-fat by Stoneyfield. It has great probiotics in it and the girls love it!!!!!

For the fish - have you tried making any brown rice? Brown rice is much healthier as the glycemic index is lower and it also contains protein. I would also mix in some of her favorite veggies!!!

Thanks Jodie. I checked... no artificial sweetner... we are using Activia Non Fat.... which is basically the same ingredients as the regular ACtivia which is why i love it!

I'll try brown rice! thanks! and I have some mixed veggies of hers that i'll try at supper!

Sounds like you are on the right track Marci. I know Layla appreciates and loves you for the great care you give her. You are a good Mommy ;).

chestermama 10-20-2008 01:35 AM

My girlfriends dog has pancreatitis, and she feeds her dog one of the foods from solid gold that is only 6 or 8 percent fat, and she feeds her evangers wet food which is also low fat. I do not know of any premium dog food that is that low fat for dry food.

Ellie May 10-20-2008 06:04 AM

Any symptoms yet?

DENISE517 10-20-2008 07:17 AM

I can't give you any advice cause I know nothing about it, but pray that you find the right answer. Give her hugs from us:)

oh RIGHT yes... i forgot to tell you! it went SO well... i'm headed to the grocery store today to pick up a few things and cook this afternoon- it's mainly fish (i'm going to give turkey a shot and see how that goes) potato, sweet potato, and green veggies. I also have to go buy a scale. I am also going to get NV freeze dried medallions. it will never be fed alone since it does have a high fat content but over the ocurse of a day i'll break up one medallion and put it on her food. Just because she isn't getting a variety of protein sourses and needs more than just fish. ALso she likes the ground bone and whatnot for calcium. It went SO well. I feel SO much better and i'm really looking forward to getting Layla's numbers done again. I just have to wait for some supplements to arrive and as soon as she has started on those I can get her blood work done a month after starting the supplements.

oh just a multivitian, and pro biotics and then a lypase enzyme. She said she REALLY sees improvement with the lypase enzyme but I was telling her that Layla has no where to "improve" from since she is symptom free but she said it will help bring her numbers down since her pancrease will not be working so hard to produce the lypase and thus over produce lypase. but i had to get it shipped to MIchigan so we won't be able to pick it up until some time next week :(

Hmm, about getting shipped to MI, are you still interested in Cosequin? I was thinking instead of trying to get a bulky envelope across the border, would it be possible if I just sent it to MI? If that is okay, PM me with the addy please.:)

Now that Ellie's numbers are up, she will probably end up on enzymes also. We go to the vet tonight.

Marci is coming to visit me in 10 days! You could send it to my house if you want...unless it's something you can't fly with?

I'm sending you and Ellie my best for your vet visit tonight-let us know how it goes!
