My new "rescue" yorkie has a serious problem. Any help?
 

I was told his old owner left him in a car so he was a little "forest gump" special... they said that he just could not walk long distances and loves to cuddle, and was not big into play time.

Well I got him home yesterday and he is the cutest thing ever! Not to mention the sweetest, he just gets all lovie when you give him attention and gets sooo scared when you leave him alone for 3 seconds! but there are a few major problems! I was seriously lied too.

So he cant really stand and can't walk. He can only lay on one side of his body, and keeps trying to curl up in a ball. If I un curl him he acts fine and cuddly as long as I pet him/hold him back but if I stop touching him he slowly moves back... almost like he cant help it. I can't really straighten out his body.. or I guess he can't? If I lay him out normal he either flops on his back and sticks his legs straight in the air or rolls over and curls up.

If he Stands he kinds stands in a C shape and he can walk in a circle all right (very flimsy) but if he tried to walks straight he falls over... the same way I said earlier either on his back or in a ball. He tries REALLY hard to walk though and does not seem to be in any pain at all.

His Brain is all there though... he thinks perfectly fine you can tell nothing is wrong with his barin so I am thinking there is no way he was left in a hot car like suggested. I think it is something eles maybe something to do with his Spine? I jus don't know. Of course I am going to bring him to the vet I just know he has been like this for a while and don't want to stress him out for a few days because he is already stressed out being here...

Sometimes he shakes... almost like he just could not hold his weight up or even when he is laying down like a wet dog. At first I thought it was a seisure but it's not... I think it might have something to do with her nerves? He only weights 1.4 pounds so like I don't know if he can just shake one part of his body... the hole things ends up shakeing. :(

I have no idea what might be going on with him, but if I were you I would take him to my personal Vet to assess. You need to have an idea what to expect in caring for this guy.

Bless your heart for rescuing him! He sounds like a sweetie.

You should definitely bring the little guy to the vet. Bless your heart for rescuing him.

We took him to the Vet, and they think he has a liver shunt ;(

4,000 dollars to fix.

I can't stop crying we don't know what to do..

I am just heartbroken for you! I can only offer my prayers for you, your husband and this sweet little baby. May God bless you and guide you to make the right decisions.

OMG, I'm heartbroken for you. Bless you for taking in this sweet baby. And darn those who lied to you in the first place.

Get another opinion...and talk to those on here who've dealt with liver shunt...you want to be sure that is what you are dealing with.

Bless you for taking him...So sorry you were definitely lied to, no doubt about that. Please know that Liver Shunt surgery (if the shunt can be corrected) is VERY successful and he can live a normal happy life. However if left untreated he can die early.

I know that you are upset, but PLEASE DO NOT return him, I fear that if you return him to where ever he came from, they will let him suffer and die a painful death, or they will simply put him to sleep :(

There are lots of us that have Shunt Babies or MVD Babies ~ LOTS of success stories....

Let me know if you need to know anything about it? I can answer lots of things and I can lead you to the right places to research.

Also, if this is too much for you, please consider surrendering him to a Reputable Yorkie Rescue, they would take him in and certainly get him better :thumbup:

Wow what a person to rescue this little one. You had to know there was soemthing wrong with him to be so little. And not acting right. But I know your heart is broken and you are so sad right now. But there are alot on here that have dealt with this problem and can help you through this. Maybe you need to start another thread out there for this problem so you can get some answers and support for this condition.

Please tell me the name of the rescue you obtained this yorkie from. I am with a yorkie rescue and want to know who would adopt a pup out in this condition.

When you say that he is a rescue what does that actually mean? If he was from a reputable rescue you need to contact them to explain what is going on with your little guy. If you cannot afford the surgery then you can alway surrender him to a rescue who can give him the surgery that he needs.

I just read your original post and you said that he came from a breeder and was returned. Sounds like he was returned because he had liver shunt and then sold to you. What is the name of the breeder that you purchased him from and were are they located? A reputable breeder would have had this little guy vet checked when he was returned and would not have sold a pup with LS as a "forest gump" left in a car dog. Were did you find this breeder? If he was let in a car and vet checked with the symptoms that he is having they would have checked him for LS~I would think.

If I were you I would be on the phone immediately with whoever sold you this pup to let them know about the LS and the cost of the surgery.

Wow...you got him into a vet quickly! That's great! I am curious...what kind of tests did that vet do today in making this diagnosis?

Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support@yahoogroups.com join this group immediately and they can live a good life with the liver shunt surgery but i would only trust two people dr tobias and dr. center -- what were the pre and post bile acids if over 100 you may want to do the liver scan test to see if definitely a shunt -- once repaired they can have a normal life

the surgery is only like 1600 if you go to dr tobias I believe but she is at the university of tennessee but she is the only one i would trust with this surgery as she does a bunch of them and has small hands for the tinies. Please contact her and fax all info to her for review of this pup as many vets do not have a clue about liver shunt -- I do know a rescue that specializes in this if you are considering giving him up :(
