Hit By A Car I have a question. My kids dog ( not a Yorkie) got hit by a car. The vet thinks he will recover BUT, I am not so sure. I am thinking that we need a second opinion. The vets around here suck!! But I am trying to follow his advice. If we don't have any more improvement by Tuesday we are going to a different vet. He is dragging his back legs. I know it sounds awful. And I feel so bad. He is eating and telling me he needs to go the bathroom...I take him outside and he does his business...I have to hold his back end for him. But he has such a will to live that I am not ready to give up on him and he does seem to be getting better. BTW we tried leaving him at the vets and he is soooooooooooooooooo upset there the vet told us to take him home and keep him quiet. He wagged his tail today. BTW it has been 3 days. So has anyone had an experience like this??? I was about ready to give up....then his tail wagged???? PLEASE be nice I need advice. I have almost been to the point of just having him put down and then he does something that makes me second guess my thoughts?!?!?!?! |
May i ask what kind of dog it is? It may be of some help to know the breed..lol |
Did they do any xrays. If he is dragging I presume he has something broken. |
He is a mid-sized mix breed.... The vet said that he has a fractured vertabre. But the dragging is caused by swelling. He said he is sure that Bubba will recover. I am not so sure....:( Until this evening he wasn't even thinking about moving his tail. |
That could go either way, if it is severed he may have hind leg paralysis for the rest of his life, but I don't know if they can wag their tails if their hind legs are paralyzed. So I'm going to bump this and hope someone else has some ideas. Good luck. |
That is the part that I am really wondering about. I would think that if his tail wags maybe he should be walking???? I hope some one has some advice to offer. And I hope it is good. |
shouldn't that vet have also recommended to keep him quiet and not moving around other than potty trips? I say find another vet and get that second opinion. |

It never hurts to get a second opionion and I believe thats what I would do ASAP. |
Anyone else have any thoughts? |
A sedond opinion couldn't hurt, just to be sure that every thing that can and should be done is being done. Don't be quick to judge or make a decision about his life. Just read Tink's story (Tink's mom)...she was on the brink of death just a few short months ago. Her injuries were neurological, but she too couldn't move her back legs. Also, injuries to the spine can be hard to read. He may drag his legs for a long time, then one day just stop.... Bernie was hit by a car when he was a pup and has had extensive surgery. It was MONTHS before he could reliably control a bowel movement. If we'd judged his ability to do that in the first couple of weeks (or months) we would have been wrong. Please, give it time, if the vet thinks he will improve, I'd bet on that for now. |

How is your dog doing today? Showing any more improvements? I agree with the others. I think a second opinion would be wise. I think more extensive checking , testing & x-rays could prove to be beneficial. Wishing for a speedy recovery. |
He is doing about the same as yesterday...I just wish he were doing better....:( |
I would get a second oppinion but also you need to keep him from moving around if you want it to heal. He has to be kept basically crated for how long I don't know but I remember a little one that had to be crated for months to heal. How old is he? Elaine |
I think it would help you if you were to change your mind set a bit. You are looking for marked improvement way too soon. You, unfortunately have a long road to recovery ahead. If he wagged his tail already, after such a severe injury, then this is a monumental step ahead. He needs lots of quite time, as little movement as possible, lots of love and sympathy and LOTS of patience. He will get better a little at a time. You may not notice any more improvements for awhile as his vertibrae heals, and the swelling subsides. It is WAY too soon to give up on him. Be sure to come here to YT for your reassurance and support. You will get tired, you will get frusturated, but hang in there with him and his healing will be your reward. God Bless You for caring so much Patti |
I have no advice to offer. I just want you to know that you and the dog are in my thought and prayers! |
I have not given up on him. I just hate seeing him like this....Maybe if you knew a little more about him. We moved into this house a year ago in April. Bubba showed up in May...some one had to have dumped him....I have no idea why cause he is the most loving dog. AND he loves my kids....He is house trained....Fixed....minds....and did I mention HE LOVE MY KIDS. He follows them all over town (we live in a town of 200) When the kids are gone he sits on the porch and waits. If they are in town he sits outside whatever house they are in and WAITS. He is very protective of them-not mean just watches over them. He is such an active dog and he also follows us all over town. If we go down the street to see my son he follows. He can run fast-we have closked him running 40 miles an hour!!!! But he does not chase cars. Just follows us. I believe that some one hit him on purpose. Just out of meanness!!!! It just hurts my feelings that he can't go with the kids. And he HATES not being able to go. When the kids leave for school he cries for them all day til they get back. One day I had to go to town and no one was home. He broke out of the crate and got out the door, drug himself 5 blocks down the street looking for us. When I got home I thought "oh no he went off somewhere to die!" I drove all over town. To all the kids friends houses to see if he was at any of their houses....My last stop was my sons! He was laying under the shade tree with their dogs! |
When did you pup incur the injury? He has a strong will to recover and did x-ray show his injury? He sounds just wonderful. Warmly, Deborah |
Bubba Well, Ladies, Bubba tried (didn't suceed) to stand today. He isn't trying to move his legs. But he is flinching slightly when (gently) poked with a needle. So maybe just maybe he IS gonna recover. I am not trying to get too excited....but...I have been massageing his legs and setting them under him properly when it is bathroom time. Time will tell. |
I'll keep Bubba in my prayers. I had a cat that got hit by a car one time....the vet swore he wouldn't make it, but Alex had other ideas. :) |

I hope Bubba gets better! Diddy sends many get well hugs to him! |
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers;) He is a sweet angel. I hope everyday gets better for him. |
I hope and pray your boy gets better, sounds likes its going to take awhile. I would also have him checked out by another vet just to se ewhat they say. You should not let him run about town lose. bigger dogs can attack him. plus he could be killed. you wree so lucky that car didnt kill him. He sounds like such a sweetie. |
He is not a Yorkie. He looks like a 30-40 lb Chihuahua. Sorry I have no oter way to descibe him. |
