| Miserable Yorkie - please help I have just moved to Florida from NH (Thursday) and brought my two pals Toby and Bailey. Toby has adapted well but my three year old Yorkie has been going crazy with a rash which started yesterday. We gave him Benadryl tonight and an oatmeal bath but he is very uncomfortable. After bathing him we were able to look him over pretty good and his entire body is covered with puffy welts. We see no evidence of any insects or anything and he has spent very little time outside (except for occasional walks). He is normally a very nervous dog anyways - is this just nerves or ? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

| Sounds like an allergic reaction of some sort. You should probably take him to the vet. He might need something stronger than Benadryl.

| I would take him to the vet if your medication doesn't do any more good than it has so far. It does sound like some kind of allergy reaction but to what is the question. It could be something as nasty as a fire ant bite - Florida is notorious for fire ants and they can appear and disappear just as fast! Not trying to scare you but it is one of the problems with the area Hope your furbaby is feeling great soon and you can all enjoy your new home without any more welts

| If you don't suspect insects, one thing that comes to mind is the water. The water is very different down South compared to New England. Maybe you could get some distilled water for their drinking and see if that helps. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Puffy welts is likely hives - which is an allergic reaction that has turned severe. You need to keep him dosed on Benadryl until you can get to the vet - at which point, the vet may want to give a presrcription antihistamine that is stronger and/or a steroid shot. Did the rash start in a certain area? An area that would be in contact with the ground? He may have been in contact w/ a pesticide, a bug bite, or any number of things in the new environment. Keep him hydrated - but definitely keep the benadryl in him as much as possible to keep the histamine reaction at a minimum. Keep us posted.

| what color is it? Cookie had something once. We took him close to the beach. We didnt even go near the sand. IT was a dock actually that led to the beach sand etc.... Well we got back to the hotel and I noticed these slight puffy ...almost looked like mold spots? started to appear onhis ears and body.By the next day it got worse andhe was scratching a lot. I turned out it was sea lice! I felt them on my legs and thought it was mosquitos ! Genie |

| We are aware of the fire ants but were also told that for the most part the fire ants will not bother dogs unless they are actively lying on a colony or something. Do you disagree? There are so many ant hills everywhere how could you possibly totally avoid eventual contact? THX for your response. |

| We are concerned about how much Benadryl is too much. We were advised to give him 1 mg of Benadryl per pound of dog weight in order to cope with anxiety of flying on the airplane (which unfortunately for everyone around us did not work so great). We used same amount (5 mg) but are not sure how often to repeat. |
