Kidney failure Hi. My Boomerang, 14-1/2 years and 5.5 pounds, the love of my life, is now threatened with kidney failure. My vet is administering sub-q fluids daily, we have him on baby food and are praying he will survive this. Has anyone heard of or tried alternative medicines for kidney failure. I found a company on the web, Five Leaf Pet Pharmacy. They offer an all natural product with lots of testimonials on how great the product is and how it has saved the lives of many dogs. I'm searching for someone to support these claims.... I'm desperate. Paige |
Azodyl by Vetoquinol is highly recommended for dogs with renal problems...I would look into this supplement as it has been a great deal of help for many. Here's some info on it: http://www.vetoquinolusa.com/pages/pdf/AzodylVetBro.pdf |
Thank you so much. We will be back at the vet tomorrow for another dose of subq fluids and I will ask about this. We appreciate your reply!!! |
Your welcome! Good luck with your baby, and please come back to let us know how he is doing. Give the azodyl a try if your vet agrees. |
We used the special Science Diet for kidney problems for our Kizzie. Once she was stable, and on the new diet, she did pretty well for another year. We finally let her go when she was 16 yrs. It was heartbreaking, but the best for her. I hope you find something that will help you and your baby. |
Boomerang also suffers from smoldering pancreatitis so we are on a special lo fat, lo potassium, low sodium diet. We thought he had had another flare up only to discover kidney failure. We get retested on Thursday and are hoping for the very best. Life just wouldn't be the same without my baby :( |
Awww. I so understand this. I hope you get good news. |
Thanks everyone for your good thoughts. We had good news yesterday, his BUN level dropped from +130 to 77. We know all of your prayers helped. |
Great news!! Did you talk to your vet about the Azodyl...It is supposed to normalize the urea cycle and lower the BUN significantly...77 is still high, but MUCH better than 130+. The brochure in the previous link I sent explains how it works. I highly recommend it. |
You know, I printed the info you sent and gave to my vet. He wasn't very excited to give it to us and I'm not sure why. I will ask next week when I see him. I have started Boomerang on a natural herb supplement and I will let you know how it works out. We go next Friday for re-testing. He is so much perkier today, it makes my heart smile. |
I am praying for you and your baby. |
I am so happy to hear your baby is doing well. I will pray for you and him. I was wondering, can a dog ever recover from a kidney failure, like with your dog and being diagnoised with it or is it something that has to monitored for the rest of his life? I just never ran across this before and was just curious. I hope the best for you! |
praying for you i lost my poohgirl at 11 from kidney failure i know how you feel may god bless you both and send a speedy recovery |
I am so sorry. I lost my Dixie at 7 months to congenital kidney failure and I was seeing a nephrologist and he told me that he had a lot of older Yorkies in his care right then that were doing really good on SQ fluids and medicine's. Maybe try a kidney specialist they may use some alternative meds. Dixie's BUN was like 477 at the specialist's office and off the regulat vets chart. So sadly nothing could be done for her. I will keep him in my prayers. |
2 years ago we took Boomerang on vacation with us to the beach. One day at the dog beach he ate sand, a lot of sand. We had no idea. Well 12 hours later I was at the emergency hospital with him, his kidneys had completely shut down. We have been battling kidney disease aon top of his existing smoldering pancreatitis ever since. I bought something on the internet last week that we are trying. This product came from Five Leaf Pet Pharmacy, is an all organic herb supplement and a 3 week program. If it does half what they tell me it will be incredible. They also recommend hydrotherapy although we have not started that yet. I will keep you posted as we will be having the BUM levels checked weekly. So far I can honestly say he is perkier and has more bounce to his step than we have seen in a couple of months. I refuse to throw in the towel!! |
I don't believe they ever fully recover, instead it is managed. Maybe we should put our collective heads together and come up with a method of recovery... |
I know of several dogs who have used it along with Epatikin(sp?) and done well. Azodyl would not hurt anyway, as it is simply probiotics and fiber... I hope your baby recovers!! :) Prayers for you guys! |
Hi Everyone- My 14 1/2 year old Yorkie is in a late stage of kidney failure and I'm desperate. She is in the hospital for a few days having IV fluids. She has lost so much weight due to the nausea. I've been looking at the website for Five Leaf Pet Pharmacy and noticed someone else on this forum was trying it for her Yorkie. It sounds too goo to be true when you read the testimonials, but like I said, I'm desperate. I would greatly appreciate anything any of you could tell me about this product... |
My Peppy is in kidney failure and my vet prescribed him the azodyl and his numbers are now in the normal range!!! I also give him Epakatin (I ordered that on my own), but that was after his numbers improved so much... I swear by Azodyl.... |
Thanks so much for the reply. I asked our vet about the Azodyl, but she said it's only in pill form. The problem is our little girl won't eat at all and they don't have it in liquid form. I'm hoping the anti nausea meds will start to work and then we could try the Azodyl. Thanks again. |
Hi, My Peppy wont take it as a pill either...no matter what I do he spits it out......you can open the pill and it is a powder it loses some of its effectiveness but I feel something is better than nothing.. I sprinkle it on his food and mix it in... and he eats it no problem |
Can you syringe a little food into her with the medicine mixed in? I had a foster who was also in last stage kidney failure and was not eating she spent a two nights at the vets getting fluids and they got her to eat alittle, which stimulated her to eat, and she is on the azydol and her numbers have greatly improved... |
I'm going to ask for the Azodyl tomorrow when we pick her up. She won't eat, so I can't even sprinkle it in her food. I'm thinking maybe we could put it in liquid and give it to her through an eye dropper. What is the Epakatin you mentioned? |
It was highly reccomended to my on a liver chat I belong too, but for my kdiney failure dog, and when I googled kidney issues in dogs is came up as something to give them. That is also a powder that I sprinkle on his food. I did not get this from my vet but ordered online. Epakatin is a new nutritional supplement that safely and effectively supports kidney function. It helps slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease. Dogs with kidney failuer usually have high phosphorous in their blood. Epakatin is a phosphorous binder..... I am from Weymouth! |
So funny! We are neighbors! I'm going to try both, but I'm not sure she is going to come out of it this time. She is old and has been sick with this for several years. It's just so hard to say goodbye and not at least try all we can to help her. I wish I had researched this more when she was diagnosed, but she seemed fine and the vet said to just give her fish oil supplement to help. Thanks so much for your help! |
No problem...please keep me updated.. Who do you go to for a vet? |
Old Derby Animal Clinic in Hingham for the last 2 years, for many years we went to VCA in Weymouth, but wasn't happy in the end. Any vet we ever like there ended up leaving and I felt my little baby was just a number getting lost in the mix. I know they are great in alot of ways, but with her age I felt she needed something a little more personal. Where do you take your pet? Probably there! |
Where did you get the Azodyl?? Our vet can't seem to find it. Thanks. |
