Just wanted to say I am keeping all of you going through Kidney issues in my prayers. I wish I knew of this site when I was going through this with my little girl. My Pepper passed away from Chronic Renal Failure back in June, she was only 7 years old. We did everything we could, Sub-Q's, Meds, seeing the specialists. 5 Leaf is supposed to have great results, we got it too late to have any effect. Keep trying, there are many who do stabilize and do well. I am very excited to hear when someone is doing well who is going through this, any extra time is priceless. All the best to you and your babies! |
You are so nice! Thank you! I'm so sorry about Pepper. These little dogs become such an important member of the family. This is a wonderful website. It's so nice to know you're not alone in this. Our little girl came home this afternoon and is eating when hand fed. She seems to be doing well so far. I'm trying to not get false hope... it's just so wonderful to see her eat something!! |
Hi, No I do not care for VCA either, I do like Dr. Morrison she specializes in internal medicine. They misdiagnosed one of my Yorkies years ago and finally when I saw Dr. Morrison she figured it out. They have alot of interns which is why there is a high turn over.... I go to Dr. Strake with South Coastel in Weymouth... she carries azydoyl...she said she cannot get over the results she has been seeing with it... I saw someone already gave you a website that you can order it on.... I think the website is actually cheaper too :-) Hope all is well..... |
Renal failure I do not have any yorkies at present (my pack is 13 dogs of assorted breeds and mixes that my wife and I rescued from abuse situations)but my beloved 12 y/o GSD, Liebschen has renal failure and is currently on Hills K/D food, Epakitin and Azodyl. She has been on the Hills and Epakitin for about 2 years and the Azodyl for 2 weeks since she stopped eating. She also has had a subq fluid treatment (we will administer weekly) and is now eating a little with a LOT of coaxing. She is fit otherwise for her age as she gets lots of exercise on our farm and as the Alpha of the pack. We are desperate to do whatever we can to prolong her life as long as she is not suffering. Can anyone verify the claims made by 5 Leaf Pet Pharmacy for its line of herbals etc. or suggest any other things we can try? |
We lost our little Pebbles today. Last night she was up alot very sick, throwing up blood. We took her in today and was told she had stomach ulcers due to the kidney failure. I was told she was in the end stage and we could treat the ulcers. This would have involved more hospitalization, shots, and basically hospice care for her remaining life. After lots of tears we decided if Pebbles could speak for herself she would not want that. I have some peace knowing we did everything we should have since she was diagnosed almost 2 years ago. Her passing today was very peaceful as she was surrounded by her family members that loved her best. It has really been a blessing talking to all of you these last few days and knowing we are not alone. Thank you and good luck with your beloved little Yorkies. Kerianne- Pebbles was on 2 different precription diets, we have Royal Canine Modified and Hills KD (both are canned foods). If you could use any of these please let me know. I would be very happy to give them to you. |
I'm so very sorry for your loss :( |
i am so sorry to hear of your great loss...i lost 2 of my furbabies from the same thing and when Scarlet threw up blood we did the same thing you had to do..it still hurts so bad, i cry almost every day and it has been almost a year..i wonder if i should have kept going with more treattments but deep inmy heart i knew her quality of life was not good.. Oh i just can't talk about this anymore..all my thoughts are with you..if you need to talk just keep in touch with me... p.s. i have scarlets baby and she is 14 and nthey think she has kidney failure..no one told me about epakitin..let me know more about it... |
UPDATE PLEASE!!!!!! I joined this site just to find out Quote:
|
Update on Liebschen She is hanging in there. We have gotten green tripe,Renal Essentials, Calcitriol, Prozyme in addition to the Epakitin and Azodyl. Her appetite is declining but with much coaxing she is still getting about 2 cups of food a day. She still is pretty energetic and enjoys the daily walks with the other dogs. I give her 6-800 ml of saline solution subcutaneously about every 5-7 days. We will take her in for another blood test soon. Keep us on prayer. |
Sounds like you are taking great care of her. I wish I had known about Azodyl and all the other things...maybe we would have had our little Pebbles a bit longer, I'll never know. Please know I am thinking of you and your dog. I hope you have lots more wonderful time with her. Keep us posted on her progress. |
RIP Pebbles!! I'm so sorry for you loss. I read your thread from page one today, and the turnout broke my heart. My thoughts are with you! |
Thank you. She had a wonderful and long life. I miss her so much, but I really think she is at peace now. Kristen |
Hi, I just read this post...I am so sorry to hear about Pebbles...and also read on your other post you are looking to adopt... I am with Yorkies Inc. And yes I could use the food if you still have it...Peppy eats the KD can So sorry for your loss... Kerri |
Hi Kerri- I actually gave the food the someone else when I didn't hear from you...sorry! It was a month ago yesterday we lost her. It still doesn't seem real...keep thinking I hear the pitter patter of little feet. I'm thinking about adoption. We have 3 small children right now, so I don't even know if they would let me adopt. That is also the reason I have to find just the right dog. When we get a pet, it's for keeps, not going back to rescues or shelters. Exactly how many Yorkies do you own Kerri? Hope all is well! Kristen |
I just read on the website they will not allow adoption to homes with small children. I'm actually glad to hear that as children can "love" on a dog that size a bit too much. I'm still going to keep checking because I know my parents would be great adoptive parents for a rescue dog. |
Hi, What are the ages of your children? We have adopted out larger Yorkies who could not get hurt by accident...we just do not make a "habit" of it.... When I lost my first Yorkie Holly I also remember thinking I heard her walking in my bedroom on my hardwood floors.... I have 4 male Yorkies... No problem about the food...happy you someone who needed it got it... |
Hi Kerri- They are young, all under 2! I have been on the Yorkie Inc website for the last hour reading all the stories. What wonderful people you and Cathy are taking care of and finding homes for these little dogs. It was so heartwarming to read the success stories. You just know these dogs are hitting the jackpot of life with their new families. I think in all fairness we should wait a few years until the kids are older. It wouldn't be fair to bring any new pet into our home right now. I just miss my little girl so much. I would love to adopt one of the senior dogs one day. |
Well when you are ready let us know :-) Wow all under the age of 2!!!! |
Five Leaf Pet Pharmacy Hey All, I found your site while researching canine kidney failure. I am looking into giving my dog a treatment from Five Leaf Pet Pharmacy and was hoping to get some feedback. I saw that another member was starting the treatment on her dog and was wondering what the outcome was?? Does anyone else have any experience with the product? |
When I heard about Five Leaf it was too late for my Pebbles. I just got an email from someone who has used it on her dog for several months now and is having great results. I have also heard of some who did great for a few weeks and then ended up not so well. I'm so glad you are researching this yourself and seeking alternative treatments. I listend to our vet and did the tried and true things... oh, how I wish I had the time over. Have you looked into Azodyl or Epakitin? They have great results. When I found out about these things my dog was in the end stage of kidney failure. Best of luck and keep us posted. |
Thanks so much for your response! I'm sorry to hear that it was too late for Pebbles :( If you don't mind me asking, do you know why the folks you mentioned that tried five leaf did not end up well? Was it because of the treatment or unrelated? I recieved the kit in the mail yesterday but am very hesitant to start the treatment. I can't really seem to get good feedback on the stuff other then the testimonials on the site. My vet is not familiar with it because it is a wholistic treatment. She has told me that it should not hurt my dog, but may not help...I'm nervous to start, I guess I just don't want to end up harming her more. Again if you don't mind me asking, what did your vet recommend? My dog, Lyla, was hospitalized for five days on IV fluids. She did respond well to the fluids, but her levels are still not normal. She came home yesterday with a suitcase of medications! Toady she is very sluggish again and will not eat. I have not heard of Azodyl or Epakitin. I will have to research them also. It's so upsetting to see her moping around the house and not eating. |
5 Leaf I had also purchased the 5 Leaf, but my Pepper was too far gone for anything to work. We used it only for about 2 days. I did not use Azodyl, but I bought my Epakitin directly from Entirelypets.com. It was more reasonable than what my vet was selling it for. I also did the fluids and Sub-Q's at home. My feeling is that anything is worth a shot, if they are having quality of life and can can handle it (not too old or frail). I don't know where you are in New Jersey but the Oradell Animal Hospital and The Animal Emergency & Referreal Service in Fairfield, both have great Internal Medicine Specialist that would be able to help you with kidney issues. Good luck and prayers for your puppy. Wendy |
I did not do Sub Q's. Pebbles was 15 and did not take well to me when I gave her shots (she would bite me!)... if her nature had been more gentle and if she had been younger I probably would have tried. As I'm sure you already know, your dog has a deadly disease...Five Leaf and the other things will not hurt or make things worse. They could possible help or do nothing, they won't hurt. I know the Five Leaf is pricey, but depending on your situation I would try anything possible. Five Leaf, Azodyl and Epakitin are not invasive. Research all 3. |
You had asked what our vet suggested for Pebbles... She was switched to kd diet and fish oil supplement daily. I have not read anything anywhere about the fish oil supplement, but it really seemed to help her. Over the 2 years I really noticed a difference when she didn't have it for a few days. She would have to pee alot more and I think she drank more. |
Thanks for your replies. I have been giving her the fiveleaf treatment for about a week now. I don't see any huge improvement. Maybe a tiny little bit, but it's so hard to tell. The vetadvised her to be givenSubQ fluids at home so I have been doing that too. She is still very mopey and just lays around the house hardly getting up. It breaks my heart. She's barely been eaiting anything. She goes back to the vet today and I will certainly ask about Azodyl and Epakitin. Thanks for your help, I'll let you know how she does! |
Lyla came home today after three more days at the vet. She still will not eat, and has now developed an ulcer. I am going to order Azodyl today. My vet okay-ed it, but does not have it at the pharmacy. I'm not sure what else can be done and I'm rapidly losing hope :( |
You can order the Azodyl from entirelypets.com...That\'s where I buy mine. The azodyl should help with the ammonia build-up which is typically what causes the inappetance and a lot of symptoms. It should help normalize the urea cycle... Good luck and keep us updated. |
Hope Lyla improves to the best she can. I have been dealing with my Julz and kidney failure too, you are not alone. I was just given another blow today that her blood work values are not good, in fact they are doubled. We just started her on SQ and Carefate treatments for a little over a week and her blood was drawn last Sat and her BUN was at 210 and creatinine is 3.6. She does eat for us but not her food. She is eating cream wheat in the mornings and boiled chicken/pasta in the afternoon and again at night. She doesn\'t drink too much but i do make everything very soupy. I\'m sorry we are going through this but I\'m glad i came across this site, i find it very informative. Good luck to you and Lyla and please update. |
How old is Lyla? How long ago was she diagnosed? I\'m sure you mentioned it, but I don\'t remember. I\'m really praying for Lyla... I know what you are going through. Please keep us posted on her progress. I hope the Azodyl and Epakitin work. Thinking of you... Kristen |
Lyla is 5. We were told that she was having minor problems with her kidneys in May by one vet, and then this all pretty much happened in the last few weeks when we took her to another vet and they diagnosed her in failure. I just ordered the Azdoyl and I will let you all know how she does on it. Thank you all so much for your support. I\'m so glad I found this website as well. It is really nice knowing there are people I can talk to and get advice from. Knowing that you all care so much really means a lot. Like I mentioned before we just brought her home from another three days at the vet today and she is all swollen in her midsection and back legs. It is so bizzare looking because just a few days ago she had gotten so skinny. The vet told us the reason for the swelling was too much toxins in the blood because the kidney\'s are not filtering. It just seems odd to me. Has anyone else experienced the swelling with kidney failure?? |
