Phoebe update Tomorrow I will find out when Phoebe can be seen by a surgeon. My vet believes cataract surgery will help her. They don't do the surgery where I live so we will have to travel to Atascadero CA. My vet estimates the cost at $1500.00-$2000.00. My Dad has generously offered to pay for Phoebe's surgery. Phoebe was originally a gift from my Dad to my daughter. Unfortunately for my daughter, Phoebe decided she was MY dog not hers. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. The stories of blind dog living fulfilling years has really lifted my spirits. |
Phoebe is a beautiful lady . Good Luck with the surgery. Sending ((HUGS and Kisses)) from Virginia. |

It is true that blind dogs adjust very well. Years ago (when I still lived at home) my stepmothers dog went blind. She followed my Jesse (she was a schnauzer too) and she was her seeing eye dog! It was amazing to watch and Jesse would wait for her and make sure she was doing well. Sadly that was years ago and both are gone now...but it was a wonderful bond they had and Lady (the blind girl) lived three years after she went blind and was 18 years old!! |
Sending lots of hugs to you both !!!:ghug: |
I'm sure your babies will adjust just fine. I really do believe it much more difficult for us humans to adjust to our babies losing their sight. Last Jan. our chocolate yorkie, Chunk was diagnosed with retinal degeneration at the age of nine months. He is almost now completely blind now. When the specialist gave us the diagnoses I felt like the world just collapsed on me. I'll never forget her words of He's almost completely blind and it is not treatable, nothing can be done for him. I quickly snapped out of my depression and conformed our home to best suit Chunk. The dr said our other dogs were basically Chunk's eye seeing dogs so we put bells on their collars, gated our pool, because before of his diagnoses Chunk kept falling into the pool. We do not move our furniture around and try not to leave things out of place. He has adjusted very well and we expect him to have a very fulfilling life with a bunch of love. a righteous man regards the life of his animal.... proverbs 12:10 |
Any news on Phoebe today? Hey whay a great idea! From cgennawey's post: The dr said our other dogs were basically Chunk's eye seeing dogs so we put bells on their collars, gated our pool, because before of his diagnoses Chunk kept falling into the pool. We do not move our furniture around and try not to leave things out of place. He has adjusted very well and we expect him to have a very fulfilling life with a bunch of love. Maybe I won't need to buy Spicy an eye seeing person after all. |
Sweet Phoebe.... you'll be okay little one.... Your Phoebe is a beautiful girl..... :animal37 I'm so sorry that I have no wise instruction or suggestions for you as I've not been confronted with a baby with loss of sight... but please know that we will keep you and Phoebe in our prayers :hands: that she will adjust to her new way of life and settle back in to some sense of contentment.... and that you, will be able to stay strong through her transition and continue to encourage her to be well. :tinyheart Someone said it perfectly in a different thread re: another blind pup.... "thankfully, love is FELT and not SEEN..." She'll be just fine 'neath the shelter of your love... :luvu: Warm hugs to you  And extra special snuggles to your precious Phoebe. :littleang |
Sweet Phoebe. I know it is a natural progression for our beloved pets, but it is difficult to watch them as they grow older. Charlie is 11 and beginning to be afraid of the dark when we go outside to potty. I think he see shadows and the movement of the trees. Sophie (full coat Yorkie in my avatar), who died at 13, was the same way. Look forward to good news for Phoebe and they are the most wonderful breed of pup. Warmly, Deborah |
Hugs to you and your baby. I love our yorkie but my heart has always been with schnauzers. I still have my yorkie baby (l yr.) and 2 schnauzers babies. (11yrs. & 13yr.) Mandy's birthday is today as a matter of fact. We lost Max at 13 1/2yrs. old because of diabetes. I know what you are going through. He lost his hearing but it is more common for them to lose their sight. I will be praying for Phoebe and she will adjust even if worse comes to worse. They say as long as furniture is not moved around and they get use to everything they do really well. I think Mandy is also getting hard of hearing. Max was also on 2 shots a day. I hate diabetes with a purple passion. Just take lots of pictures and enjoy her everyday that you have her. They are truely a blessing. God bless you and little Phoebe. |

I Can Completely Understand Hi I read your post and my heart goes out to you. I too have a precious mini Schnauzer. Her name is Leipshen. She is 12 yrs old and I have had her since she was 12 wks. She also went blind last December. It seemed as if one day she could see fine and then the next day she was bumping into the wall. I was devistated . It was only one week before, that I had her to the vet for a complete check-up. She had x-rays because I was worried about her heart. She is a bit overweight, even though I watch her diet closely. I love her so much. She has been a faithful and loving companion. I cried for her when all of a sudden she doesn't have her sight. Well...I may have have cried, however Leipshen has never let her handicap bother her. She navigates around the house and out to the back patio very well. She is still happy and although she cannot chase her toys anymore, as she always loved to do, she still finds them and plays with them like before. She still loves to ride in the car. she is a trooper. My Yorkies adore her and she is very sweet and tolerant of their antics. They just fuss and jump up with Yorkie kisses and she stands and lets them. the other day I walked into the living room, Leipshen was laying next to the couch and my 5 month old Yorkie (Biscuit) was standing on her, it was adorable. I know that this is hard for you. As the days go by, Phoebe will adjust and so will you. I believe we both have more quality time ahead of us with our wonderful Schnauzers. I just wanted to let you know...I completely understand what you are feeling. Patti |
Reading this and wondered how Phoebe is doing. Is she going to have surgery? What a beautiful girl. Schnauzers are very dear to my heart and she has been on my mind. Here is a picture of my Bubba. Please keep us updated on her condition. |
2 Attachment(s) oops, forgot to download the pics..He's not regal or anything, he's just Bubba:) |
Just seeing this.......... ..........and wanted to send hugs and prayers to you and for Phoebe. It really is so very hard to watch as our beloved pets who are truely members of the family get older and even harder when they can't tell you what ails them or why. Please let us know how the appointment with the surgeon went as to whether she's a candidate for the surgery or not. (((((More Hugs))))))) |

Hugs to you and Phoebe... I know it's hard to watch when our furbabies become Senior Citizens. Your Vet will be able to give you tips to help her get around better @ home. She'll adjust just like when she got Diabetes. It'll take some time, But, it'll work. You and your beautiful Phoebe are in my thoughts. XOXO's to Phoebe, She's such a Beautiful girl... :aimeeyork Baron and his Mom |
Went to the Vet Opthomologist today. I left at 8AM and got home at 3PM. All day driving back and forth. Phoebe slept a good deal of the way. The vet says I need to get her Diabetes under control better before surgery. I ordered a glucose meter today. The estimate for both eyes is 4 thousand dollars. My Dad offered to pay, but my Mom is causing a stink. She told me "She is JUST a dog. They don't have the same feelings as people. She will be fine how she is." My DARLING husband said he doesnt care how much it costs, he is going to pay for the surgery. Now I just have to get her Diabetes under control. I swear I think I was adopted because my family doesn't even love animals like me. They suk!! Anyone else use a glucose meter on your dog?? I read I have to take the blood sample from her lip! OUCH! |
I am really sorry to hear about your sweet little baby. I had come acrossed a really neat thing for blind dogs the other day and thought this might help you and others here. It is called the angelvest. Here is the link sure hope it helps you out until you can get the surgery. angelvest. I believe these are going to be a great seller once the word gets out on them. Send you hugs for sweet little one. I know how hard medical issues and the finances for them. This might be a temparary fix for you and your baby. |
