| This would make me extremely pissed off too. I am sorry that it happened to your dogs. NOW I am hoping they will be just fine. I had a personal phone call from my vet when I was concerned about Suzi's shots. He agreed to modify her schedule. Some vets, just do not care and do whatever, even if it is against the owners wishes |

| If your vet doesn't listen to you - CHANGE VETS!!!!!!! There is simply no reason to go against your wishes. Lepto is very dangerous to toy breed puppies. There are many articles that have been written indicating the risk of harm is far greater than any benefit derived from the shot for toy breeds. But, if you still want it - please make sure it is given seperate from distemper. Distemper is no longer administered yearly either. Once puppy shots are completed and they have received their first annual booster - distemper should be given only every three years - just like rabies. Many toy breeds will gain immunity from their first year booster for much longer than three years - maybe for life. Please educate yourself on vaccinations - particularly with yorkies. Now that both my girls have had their booster of distemper, I do not plan to give it to them again. I am choosing not to vaccinate for anything other than the every three year rabies vaccine. I will only do bordetella if I need to board them. There is way too much written out there to indicate our pups are extremely overvaccinated. Only one vaccination should be given at any appointment and nothing in combination. Please separate the vaccines and space them out. It is the best way to proceed cautiously (even if your pup has never reacted before - it doesn't mean they won't react to another vaccine). Find a vet that is willing to work with you. You might be surprised at the conversations. When Angel was due for her distemper booster, my vet told me that their practice (there are about 8 vets in this office) has a recommended schedule they are required to suggest. Unless the owner discusses alternatives, they are not allowed to give their two cents. When I told her my plan to not vaccinate beyond the booster, except for rabies, she made a notation in my chart, changed their distemper schedule to every five years and told me when I get the reminder just to call and decline the vaccination. She concurred that there are way too many vaccinations being given, but since vets make tons of money from annual vaccinations and the ensuing check-ups, most are not willing to tell patients this!!!!!!!!!!

| Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Great post Jodie! I am on about the same schedule as you. Only thing I did differently was Lepto for Bella. I gave the seperate Fort Dodge shot and spoke with my vet for like 45 minutes about it. Here is Monroe we have 3 vets downtown. My vet alone had 5 cases of Lepto and I know at least one was fatal in an Australian Sheppard This dog was walked downtown only and lived in an apartment. How in the world he got this is beyond my vet and the owner. The City I live in is on both Lake Erie and River Raisin so I am sure that plays into it. So now that I have Bella vaccinaed for it I am stuck trying to decide on Diggy. He seems to be more sensitive and reacts to things Bella does not. So I really am thinking hard. Im pretty nervous again after reading this thread and seeing what happened to Amber. Guess I have some reading to do.

| My Bella is never exposed to standing water or doesnt dig around in the soil. From the info I have read only 10% of the dogs that get Lepto die. I am not giving it to my baby So how are the lil furbutts this morning? what was the vet's response when you were so upset? Last edited by FL Tink; 06-11-2008 at 06:43 AM. |

| What is the Lepto given for? I don't know if Scooter has ever had it but he's never had a reaction to shots. Poor babies!

| Sure hope your babies are doing okay this morning. Chipper just got a rabies booster. Asked the vet about Lepto. She said she never gave to small dogs because there are too many problems with it. You can give Distemper every FIVE years instead of two? Interesting.

| Lepto is a virus that you can vaccinate for, like rabies, distemper, parvo, etc. The thing is, this particular vaccine doesn't go over very well with most smaller breed dogs, and certain areas aren't very susceptable, like Grand Junction, CO for example. So, for those who don't live in an area that is high risk for lepto, it is often better to pass on this particular vaccine because of the low probability that yorkies will encounter this virus and the high probability that they will have a bad reaction to the vaccine. Every time you get shots done you should review what is being given. Not so great vets are usually inclined to just automatically put you down for everything, as that's more money in their pocket. Personally, whenever I go I take giardia, corona virus, and lepto off the list right away. Lepto and corona aren't too prominent here, and giardia vaccine is worthless in my opinion. Tucker got the vaccine and still ended up with it. It comes from drinking irrigation water, etc. now he just drinks filtered water. Also, Giardia is really easy to treat. Anyways, it's just really important to learn the purpose of each vaccine, the probability your baby will get the thing the vaccine is for in your area, and the possible side-effects and reactions from each vaccine. Then you can make more informed choices when it comes to your babies health ![]()

| Oh I hear ya, I hate having to give my boys vaccines. They ONLY get rabies & distemper and both have 3 year vacs. So I only have to deal with this every 3 years thank goodness... but its as traumatic on me as it is on them I think! Im sure it was for you too! I hope your babies are feeling a bit better now!
