Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. How long have you had him? It could be kennel cough. Some puppies will come home with that. I would have the vet check him out.

My girl friend and I got two little guys last Saturday. Digby is fine he is about 11 weeks old and Dexter is 9 weeks and he last night seems to be doing the same thing you are talking about. I am pretty concerned my girl friend thinks he just got himself worked up. | |

| I've read a couple different titles that said reverse sneezing lately...what in the world is it? Daisy did the hacking thing twice this weekend. I thought she had swallowed something at first. I got her down and pryed her mouth open and looked down her throat.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Nolee started with this horrible coughing sound. Took him to the vet and she said his tonsilis are inflammed and swollen.

| Hi, I got a mini yorkie at the weekend and he's 7 weeks old. He started doing this dry cough/heaving noise that everybody is mentioning. We brought him to the vet for his checkup today and mentioned it too him (he's only done it a few times, its not constant!) and the vet wasn't overly concerned and mentioned that yorkies can be prone to sore throats and sometimes get collapsed tracia's (as he seems to choke then wake himself when he's sleeping) Do you think this could be tonsilitis maybe or just a sore throat? He seems to be only nibbling at his food, but he may have worms also as the vet noted. We have to go back to the vet in 3 weeks for his next injection... should we wait and see how is cough goes or go straight back with him before it gets any worse. Oh and he's not been outside in the cold and he's kept inside and warm in the day and night... one more thing... could the squealing at night be making it worse? We only have him 4 days, so he's still settling in and crying a lot at night (tis very hard to ignore the lil fella!!!) Any help / advice is much appreciated. Lou. |

| Sounds quite a bit like kennel cough to me... Nikko does this, and at first we freaked out thinking he was gagging too. Turns out, it's just a cough, and as we've had him longer, it's sounding more and more like a cough, but still followed by a sort of gagging noise that we figure is probably in actuality a throat clearing. But it sure was scary at first. Kennel cough can last a short time, or MONTHS, depending... it's basically just like a cold. Antibiotics and close contact with your vet are good, because like a human cold, kennel cough can turn into pneumonia. But other than that, you just have to wait it out, assuming that's what it is. Nikko started out with a few sneezes right when we got him, progressed to "coughing" at least once every half hour even through the night after a week or so, and now is back down to just a few cough sessions throughout the day. Seems it's worst in the evenings, mornings, or when he tries to do really hard exercise. One thing that really helps is buying a warm/hot steam vaporizor and adding vicks to it. Make a little "cave" with blankets or towels over the vaporizor and your pup's crate, so he basically has a happy little steamroom sauna whenever he naps or sleeps at night. If you can't do this, take him in the bathroom with you when you shower, and let the bathroom get really steamy and warm. It really helps them breather easier, and heal. Lauren & Nikko |
