Sammy's LP Surgery Update - 2 days after surgery 4 Attachment(s) Hey! OK Sammy had LP surgery on Thursday. She was supposed to stay overnight but they got her surgery done early so she was able to come home the same day! The night was hard but we knew it would be. She was in pain and she couldn't figure out why these big things were on her legs. We all had to figure out how on earth she was supposed to pee !?! I tried a pee-pad and she just looked at me like I was crazy. Of course we got like an inch of snow so it was wet and cold outside, but we gave up and took her out there and she peed! She's gone out like every 4-5 hours no problem and she even pooped outside this afternoon!! I had to hold her up but she did it. It was a team effort. :D They didn't want to send her home until she was up standing and walking on the bandages, and she wasn't, but we encouraged her and we have been practicing and she has really started to move quickly! I need to take a video. Overall we are so lucky. So far she has not had a reaction to the pain meds - no diarrhea. They do wear off about 2 hours before she can have more though and they take a while to kick in. Oh and she did try to lick/chew one of the bandages but we are watching her very closely now. But she is alert and silly and barking at us when we don't pay attention to her. ----------------------- OK so AS I'm typing this she needs to go outside and she pees blood. So 6 hours later we are home from the ER vet and she has a UTI. We knew it couldn't go perfectly smooth... poor thing she is exhausted and so are we. I'm too wired now to sleep so she is snuggled up next to me and I'm posting pictures anyway. Here she is the night we got home, then sitting pretty, chewing a bully stick, and trying to walk. |
Awwww, the poor little peanut!! Sorry to hear about the UTI, hopefully it will be cleared up soon with antibiotics. It won't be long and Sammy will get those bandages off and feel much better. My lil girl Shelby had her surgery (both legs also) 4 weeks ago. The most difficult thing after 4 weeks is keeping them from running and jumping so they don't injure themselves. Good Luck to you and Sammy...... keep us posted on the progress!!! ....... even with those bandages, it amazes me that they can still have that little "smile"!!! |
Poor Sammy! All in all, sounds like she is doing great. Here's hoping that things continue well and the UTI clears up. We hear of so many that won't/can't pee or poop after surgery so I was happy to hear that she already has. It's good to see that her little face still looks happy! Thanks for the update. ;) |
sorry about the UTI but she looks good! Her eyes are nice and bright and she seems to be adjusting well. Heal quickly sweet baby! |
Aww poor baby. As if she didn't have enough pain. Hope she feels better soon. |
aww..i am sooo sorry about the UTI. But so glad the surgery went well..she is sooo adorable as always! |
Aww, she looks wonderful!!! Sorry to hear about the UTI, but otherwise it sounds like she is doing really well. Sending lots of yorkie hugs and kisses for a speedy recovery! |
poor sweet baby, hope she gets better soon ! |
Poor Sammy, brings back memories of Gracie going through the same thing a couple of months ago. Ask your vet if you can give the pain meds more often, most likely you can. Keep us posted and PM me if you have any questions. I am happy to help if I can. |
Poor baby!:( You are such a wonderful mommy! Good job! :) Sorry about the UTI, and I think asking about more pain meds would be a good idea. Hugs from, Judy and Gizmo |
Hi. Is there an update on our sweet Sammy? Thanks, Deborah |
Sammy is doing OK when the pain meds are working. She is wagging her tail and being silly but she still wants to be held a lot and cuddled. We are going to videotape her walking later and we will post that. |
Thanks for the update. Still praying that little Sammy will have a quick recovery! Toto says tell Sammy that she's pulling for her ... Yorkie girls are strong! :p |
awww...the sweet baby. I hope she feels better soon!! she is looking great considering what she just went through! I hope she figures out how to use her clubs soon and can be back to being her normal self :) the hardest part of having the casts on is keeping them from getting wet and dirty so you don't have to have them changed out all the time. That was noooo fun at all :( but i'm sure she will be running around and amazing you all very soon :) me and the girls send lots of huggles!! |

Erin, I am so sorry Sammy had a UTI on top of everything else she has gone through. I still can't get over that third picture of her standing up in the bandages. And yes, plastic wrap is great to keep the bandages dry. I used it with my last 'port' for my I.V.s and it never got a bit wet. Sheila |
tede just got the same help :(  Quote:

How is Sammy today?? Hope she is continuing to improve. How's the UTI? Poor baby ... I know she will be glad when she can be her old happy self again. :) |
Why did the Vet. wrap her legs? My Zada never has wraps. I'm wondering about the whys and why nots now. For those of you that have had this type of surgery on your dog, let us know if they got the legs wrapped or not. Healing is a long 6 to 8 week process and so important for them not to injure themselves by walking around too much. |
She is doing OK. A little whiny but that could just be because she is bored and frustrated. She is moving when she wants to. They said she should be up and walking on the bandages. Just no running or jumping. I can't really stop her from walking on them if she wants to except for putting her in a crate 24/7 and my ears just can't take that. :D She does OK in her crate for short periods or when she is tired but if she is bored and doesn't want to be in there she is relentless with the screaming... |
Your little Sammy is gorgeous!! Doesn't it just break your heart when they're in pain?? I hope things get better for you both this weekend.... |
l.p. surgery ???? Has any one heard of this being done by orthascopic (sorry spelling) My little one needs the same thing. This little sweetie:p I cant begin to think about "keeping them calm no jumping for 8 weeks" :animal36 not my Tede-Bare I am so glad for the post ... it helps us all.. when we have to go through the same things .. If any one has heard of new ways to do this please e-mail. and I will keep checking on you and your baby to see that all is going well////kisses from us and any helful hint would be great:good job: :animal37 :getwell: :big_hug: |

I have not heard of this being done orthoscopically, but I have read ALOT and done research and haven't seen anything on it...... I would be interested to hear about it if it is done. |

Does she like a KONG? Filled with peanut butter and put in freezer. It helps with the "boredom". ;) Get Well Soon Sammy! |

Sammy seems to be past that hump with the pain meds. Her pain must be less now since she is not shaking or showing signs of increased pain as the meds wear off. She is due to get them now and I haven't given them to her yet and she just walked (almost running - me chasing - she's fast!) to greet my husband! |
Wonderful news that she is doing so well!! |
Just checking in on Sammy ... sounds like she is improving. Hope she had a good night! :) |
3 Attachment(s) I have pictures and an update! Today was MUCH better. Sammy's pain meds seem to be working, but that also means she has been a lot more active and it's exhausting watching her every second! She tried to climb the stairs and she also tried to jump/fall off the bed. We just have to be really careful and watch her closely! So we went for a walk today. Loki walked and Sammy went in the stroller. Loki liked it because we got to walk a lot farther than usual. Sammy had fun too! She is sleeping now so I guess it wore her out! :D The video is coming soon - I uploaded it to YouTube but it's not ready yet. |
Video of Sammy Walking! OK well it’s a couple days late… but here’s a video of Sammy walking. Keep in mind that 1. This is the first time I have used this video camera (or really any video camera) 2. This is the first time I have used iMovie 3. I did this by myself (I LOVE MY MAC!) Usually when I get the camera out they immediately follow me around trying to get in front of the camera? To them Camera=Treats :D So anyway, first you get to see Loki do a trick. Sammy didn't want to walk away from me so I had to toss some Yorkie Yummies. I tried to get her to walk so that you could see how cute it is. Oh and they both spin when they get excited so you can see her try to spin!! |
