I just found this thread! I hope Bernie is on the mend and is back to his old self soon, poor babe. He went thru so much and was lucky enough to be found by one of YT's angels who has given him so much love. He is such a handsome little man and should be up strutting his stuff for all the little ladies here. Big hugs, warm kisses and a couple paw-shakes on their way from all of us. Get better soon, Bernie. |
Bernie...I'm so sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I'll say an extra special prayer just for you. My only advice is to let him rest. If he pulled or strained something...rest is good. As long as he continues to eat, drink and go potty. What exactly did the vet do, any blood test...x-rays? Was he already on the anti-inflammatory, or is this new? Does he put any weight at all on that leg? Does he try to pull away if you touch it or move it around? Sorry, so many questions...I don't understand...what could be wrong? How old is Bernie now? Know that I so wish him well...but we hurt when they hurt...it's a mommy (and daddy) thing, I guess. Hugs... |
Judy, as I write this I hope Bernie has improved some for you. As I watched those video's you posted it made me so sad to see him like that. :( Thinking of all of you and wishing you as good an Easter as you can have under the circumstances. Bernie, here's a special Easter Bunny hug for you :bunny: :hug60: :bunny: and a Get Well wish. :getwellso |
I hope little Bernie is much better today! Kellie helped us tremendously when we were going through so much with Reese. I apologize for not being able to find out if there was temp along with the inflammation, but all I can remember is that his Foster Mom said he began to limp. I am still praying that Bernie is better and will be his old sweet self before you know it. God bless you all. |
Update ` and HAPPY EASTER! Thank you all for being so caring! Bernie's situation has not changed much. He is doing little but resting. The only thing that has motivated him to move at all is when he needs to have a bm. For that he will hop through the yard for several feet. It's exciting to see him move, but as soon as he's finished he just stands their on three legs waiting for dh or I to pick him up. He is still eating and drinking with gusto, and even stood to eat once yesterday. I believe he has tired of laying around, now when I bring him in from outside, he stands on his three legs for awhile before laying down. He is being such an angel. No barking, no whining, no fussing of any kind. To answer some questions, he turned two years old in December?January (we don't know the exact date). He was 9 mos when he was hit by the car and had surgery. We met and fell in love with him a couple of months after that. He is NOT putting any weight on the leg at all, it just dangles/hangs from his side when he stands. Neither does he complain when we manipulate or touch it. He CAN move it, because I've seen him shift it to get more comfortable when he is laying down. We put him to bed between us last night as we were afraid of him falling. He seemed like he might be running a temp shortly after that because he was panting hard. DH brought him cool drinking water which he lapped up, but then he began the heavy panting again. Thinking he was too warm, I brought him downstairs and he and Ginger slept in dogbeds with me beside them on the floor. (with the exception for a short while yesterday when I was working at the table beside him, I have been on the floor with him the entire time) He quit panting immediately and went to sleep. As I type this, he has just stood up and is looking at me. I'm going to go check this new event out. Thanks all!:) |
glad to hear that his spirits are up at least. eating, drinking, and eliminating are all good signs. i would definitely take him to an orthopedic surgeon as soon as you can since he's holding the leg up all the time. His lameness could have nothing to do with the pins, it may be from his knees. its hard to tell but a lot of people come in saying their dogs paw or hip hurts and not even know that it was the knee all along that was causing the dog to hold up his leg. i hope bernie starts feeling better soon. |
Another update Well, he seems to be showing some improvement. (Dare I hope) Of course, this is the third day on meds and I added a baby aspirin this morning. But he stood up earlier, and actually followed me a couple of times this am!!!! He's only using the three legs. I don't think his back right leg has ever gotten as strong as his others and he's having to rely on that now, so he's really wobbly...but he is moving around a little bit. I tried to video tape him (mostly for the vet, but also to post here) But, of course, he was done walking by the time I grabbed the camera. DH tried to encourage him with goodies, but we don't want to push him too much. These are just the ramblings of a worried mama, but if he's showing improvement I think thats a sign that it probably isn't infection? Don't want to rule that out completely as the meds could be showing us a false picture...but I will hope. I don't want to put my boy through another surgery. |

Judy I am Just Checking in I a so sorry bernie is still not doing that well.. I will keep praying for you all. (((((HUGS))))) |
That is a good point...aspirin use may interfere with any type of procedure Bernie may need...but what about the anti-inflammatory? I thought some NSAIDS could cause bleeding problems as well... Judy you are a concerned mom...ramble all you want, we're here to listen. Maybe something you say will give insight to what the problem really is. Could it be LP? Are you able to actually bend his knee? Did you check his paw really well? Just trying to help. Thrilled to hear every little bit of improvement...we're praying so hard for him to heal and recover 100%. Bernie...Winston sends his puppy love...and tons more kisses. |

Human medications always can cause a problem. the most common ones like asprin and benedryl can even cause problems. |
Good morning, Judy. I am probably asking a question that has been answered but did the vet re-xray, Bernie? I was looking at his x-ray and wonder if something is now happening with the ball joint? What caused the second hip revision for me was that I fell full force on my knee, and cracked the cup that holds the ball joint. It felt like my leg was dangling.. Trying to think of Bernie and that was a serious accident for such a little boy. Do you think perhaps he jumped down, twisted and the result is something has shifted? Please know I am only trying to help and glad you will take him to see your vet tomorrow. You know he is a strong boy, and if he does have another surgery, your loving care will help him recover. Also, I understand you and your husband's concern because they do become our beloved children. Thinking of Ginger and Bernie today. Warmly, Deborah |
I am just finding this thread also. I also have tears in my eyes from watching the videos and reading through this thread. A very loving and caring Mommy, Bernie and Ginger have. With all that love he will be well soon. He sure is a handsome guy. I am sending hugs to you and your babies. Please give Bernie a pat on the head for me. Hugs, Mary |
Oh, Judy! Just found this thread. Hugs to you and gentle hugs to Bernie! Poor li'l guy...he's been through so much, already. I'm so blessed that your family found him, and gave him a loving home. The pins very well may be an issue. Anytime there is foreign matter in the body, bacteria tends to seat there. That's why I'm so careful about Hannah and bacteria. If bacteria is introduced into her body, it can seat on the rods in her back, or the leads on her vegal nerve. Praying he's better, today. |

sorry, as I was posting, something pretty exciting happened! I realize my comment seemed kinda, well, short...not meant to be. Thanks so much for all of your help and advice!!!!! But....coming soon...a new video of what distracted me:) |
Look!!!!! Well, this isn't exactly what happened that made me drop what I was doing...but you get the idea. This doesn't change anything, we're still getting back to the vet in the am to figure out what the heck is going on...and he's not using that leg much, but LOOK :) :D :D This is soooooo much better than anything he's done since Friday!!!! I had to block of the stairs, lol, because he decided to use them:eek: Calm down little guy...lets do this slowly.:) |
Wow...He moved...Bernie actually moved!!! Great news...but I agree. SLOW DOWN, don't move too fast. After all something has been keeping him down these past few days...but what? Best wishes to Bernie...I'm going to keep on praying for you little guy. |

LOL, yes I had to shrink his world to a small space around me. :) Don't want him overdoing it. :D Thanks so much for everything! We will keep you posted! |
Wow! He looked so much better on the last video. Maybe the anti-inflammatory helped him. I hope so! |
Yippeeee ... baby steps, Bernie, baby steps!! :) It certainly looks like he is feeling better but I know you are anxious to know what caused him to be sick. What an improvement!! :p |
