| What is wrong with him??? HELP! Hello, What is wrong with my baby? Izzy has been sick for the past couple of days. On tuesday and wednesday he had runny stool, then on thursday i turned into bloody runny stool. He wasnt eating and when he did eat he would throw it up. so thursday i rushed him to the vet and he said that it could be colitis and that maybe he ate something or it could be stress. I cant think of anything that was stressing him out, we have been going about our normal daily routine. The vet gave him a shot and an antibiotic (Metoclopramide syrup). Ive been giving it to him since then. And the vet also prescribed this food that is supposed to help settle his stomach...it is in kibble form. He said by today it should start to clear up. But this morning about an hour ago...he got up and pooped in three spots, the last spot was runny with blood and it was mucus like (sorry to gross you out). Im wondering if I should take him back? Im going to call him when they open but I jsut wanted to get some other opinions. I have a feeling he has something else...I trust my vet but im not sure if he diagnosed him right. Its weird that he got sick because I took him about a month ago for his routine shots and he got the clean bill of health. What is going on? I read about coccida and it said something about eating mice and other pests....now we did have a mouse in the house a few weeks ago...i caught it but im wondering if maybe he got a hold of the mouse droppings. Ive cleaned my floor many times since then but Im not sure. Please help! Im so worried!!

I just talked to the vet and he told me that it should clear up in a couple of days and to continue with the antibiotic and gradually start giving him food. Thank you so much for you well wishes.

| Hi Karla - if Izzy isn't noticably better by tomorrow, I would take him back for a stool sample. The vet should have done one. You don't physically have to take a sample in either, they have a little "tool" where they can take one while you are there. His symptoms sound a lot like Giardia (unfortunately, we have experience here). With as much snow as we have had and the ground being wet, it would be very easy for him to get it this time of year if he goes outside. Is he eating the kibble the vet gave you? If his tummy seems to still be upset, get some plain or vanilla lowfat yogurt (I like Stoneyfield organice or Dannon Naturals) and give him some. That is how we got started on yogurt for breakfast with my girls. Hope he is better soon & hope to see you soon, too!!!!

| I agree, it sounds like when my Lexie had Giardia. I would definitely go back to the vet with a stool sample just to rule it out. Its nasty stuff but Lexie was better after a few shots and a round of antibiotics. Good luck and I hope your baby feels better soon! |

| Did the vet check his stool for coccidia? He has been sick too long and in my opinion he needs to see a vet today. You don't have to take a stool sample with you, the vet can take one when you get there. Good luck. |

| Im going to take him in again. I was kind of annoyed when I called the vet and he told me to continue with the medication...i mean, how long should it take before i see that its working? he made it sound like he will be okay...but like you all said, he should have done a stool sample....im so frustrated now.

| Giardia can take a looog to to clear up. I've had way too much experience with this. I alwals put mine on chichen and rice or hamburg and rice for a week or so then gradually start them back on regular food. Keep on with the meds too. Metoclopramide is not an antibiotic. If it is Giardia she should be on something like Flagyl (metronidazole) Have a stool sample checked. |

| Mascot Hi , I am going through the Giardia with my Mascot right now, we are on our 3rd rounds of meds becasue he is a poo eater and keeps reinfesting himself... ( we tried forbid to no avail), anyhow.... my vet did an initail stool sample with Mascot as well and he got a clean bill of health and then the mucus poop came. She told me they have to specifically check for giardia becasue they dry the other poo out on the slide to check for the worms... and that will kill the giardia Anyow, i am no expert, but we had to take a stool sample back and they checked it and it was a hit. It is a stinker to get rid of.... Mascot's last stool check was less then it had been so its getting better but not gone, we go back for another stool check tomorrow. I feel like at this point we should have a poop stamp card....LOL, I hope your baby feels better soon. Dot
