| Update on Petey hi everyone. well.. where do I start? the vet called us today. and they said his bloodwork shows signs of very advanced diabetes. So after speaking with him on the phone, we took Petey back to the vet, to have a urinalysis done to see if he had "kero.. something" in his pee. It came back that he did. Which means he indeed does have the diabetes, they just dont know if there is another underlying problem with it. So, we are going to start Petey on insulin twice a day at home. And also fluids/i.v.'s once a day since they said he is dehydrated even though he is drinking sooooooo much. So the vet showed me how to administer the insulin and the i.v. at the office. I was very very nervous about doing it, but it actually wasnt bad at all. He said it is very important to watch within the next four-six hours how he responds to the insulin. He is home now resting. They also put him on a special food. He said the next 24-48 hours will determine a lot as far as if it is just the diabetes or an underlying problem such as cancer in the pancreas or something. So just still keep him in your prayers that the insulin will produce good results in the next two days. He is such a good dog and such a trooper!!!! Thanks everyone again |

| Poor Petey. I'm so glad you found out what is wrong with him and he is being treated. I will remember Petey in my prayers. Good luck with all your new nursing duties.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Sending prayers for Petey. If he has diabetes he will drink tons of water. Someone on here had posted that their baby was drinking a ton of water and that they found out he was diabetic. Hope Petey recovers quickly.

| I'm so sorry, but it's a good thing that they were able to identify his problem early. We will be praying for little Petey. Hugs from Toto and me. Please keep us updated.

| I dont know, it may be just hopeful thinking, but he seems so perky already. He is getting up and about, eating, had a chewy (I asked vet if still okay to give him a treat, and he said yes), walking over to be petted, etc... I know it couldnt have possibly helped already, but I am hoping these next 2 days are quite the turn around for him and we arent dealing with any cancer. |

| My Lady is in her seventh year with diabetes. It is a scary diagnosis, but it is a very treatable disease. Before you know it, giving insulin shots will be like second nature. I even learned to test Lady's blood sugar myself with a human meter. This is a wonderful resource for people who have diabetic pets: http://www.petdiabetes.org/contents.htm This forum is fabulous! I don't think I would have made it through that first year without it. There is so much information and support there. I really recommend joining it: http://p092.ezboard.com/Canine-Diabe...caninediabetes Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions or just need a listening ear. |
