New Puppy at Emergency Vet!! Okay, I just got my new 9 week old yorkie puppy, Lexie. My 12 year old yorkie passed away 2 years ago, so I thought it was finally time. She was the runt of the liver, has been to the vet by the breeder...they said she was eating fine. They did tell me she was eating Eukanuba. Took her thursday, she ate a little food, but not much. Same thing friday. I did some research on here and started getting worried about hypoglycemia because she was acting groggy. Gave her pancake syrup, she perked up. Went saturday am and got some nutrical in case it happened again. We finally got in touch with the breeder and found out she was eating alpo. She ate that heartily on Sat. and took her to the vet. He said blood sugar normal, looks healthy, lungs and heart sound good, she just needs to keep eating. She ate a little sat. night. Woke up sun. am to find her trying to throw up, gave her nutrical, took her to the emergency vet. Said her sugar was 83-normal, but could be thrown by the nutrical. Gave me A/d food to force feed her if she wouldnt eat on her own. So, force feed her 3 times sunday, and she at once on her own. At bedtime, she started throwing up. Gave her karo syrup and rushed her to emergency vet. Her blood sugar was only 51. They still have here with a jugular iv of dextrose. She is eating intermittenly, but her sugar will still get too low, despite the dextrose. They are going to do the 12 hour test I have seen mentioned here, but has anyway had this before. She is so sweet, but only weighs 1 and 1/2 pounds. If it is shunt, I don't even know if she is too little for anesthesia. Is there anything else if could be?? I cannot bear to lose another one, even after only having her for less than a week...losing my Buttercup before was devastating. Any help would be appreciated, sorry to be so long winded. |

I'm so sorry to hear this.:( I think University of Tennessee has done liver shunt surgery on two pound dogs... The 12 hour fast is no longer recommended for the bile acid test. It is fine to do it but it isn't necessary and I wouldn't do it with a dog that is suspected of having hypoglycemia. The important thing with a bile acid test is a blood draw before a meal and one two hours after. |
I'm so sorry about your new baby. I would definitely check into liver shunt. If she was eating regularly, her blood sugar should not be dropping so suddenly. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have liver shunt than all other breeds combined so definitely have a bile acid test done on her. I hope she'll be okay. Keep us updated |
Oh my. Poor little lovey! Our little girl did not eat well in the beginning either. We force fed her by syringe now and then with the following that was recommended by a breeder: 1/2 c milk 1/2 c instant baby rice cereal 1 jar strained baby meat (no turkey) 1/2 tsp. karo syrup Thin this mixture out with milk if it gets too thick. Can be refrigerated for a couple of days. This brought her energy back up so that she regained her appetite. She would often throw up in the a.m. with foamy yellow stuff which was a result of having an empty stomach and then she was nauseated and would not eat, so we would get her to eat some crumbled up rice cake and then she'd be fine and eat again. We learned to get her to eat just before bed, so her tummy wasn't empty in the a.m. and that prevented the throw-ups. |
Cali my 2 1/2 year old kept having hypoglycemic episodes and was at the er vet a lot for iv therapy etc. when she was a puppy. I had to feed her every 3 hours even during the night. She wa 1 lb at 9 weeks and the runt of the litter. She was diagnosed with very mild MVD or internal liver shunt. They specialist felt that her case was so mild she didn't need treatment and wasn't the cause of her hypoglycemic episodes. She did grow out of the hypoglycemic epsidoes. I would just do what you are doing, watching her carefully, make sure she eats frequently, even if it's not the best food, Cali would only eat Cesars wet food. Once she got older I switched her to a good dog food. The test should give you a more difinitive diagnosis. I will keep her and you in my prayers that it is not serious. I know how terrible it is to go thru this. |
I am so sorry your new puppy is so sick. At nine weeks old she is should still be with her mother so hopefully this is just a problem regulating her blood sugar and not a liver shunt. Please keep us posted, okay? |
Trust me, I so wish now I had done more research and she had stayed with her mother longer. I would have paid just to keep her there longer if I knew what I know now. I will ask about the bile acid test, that may have been what they said, but I have just been so frantic. She is still under 24 hour care, so at least it makes me feel better she is under constant watch. They said she is playful though, I just want her to be well. It is coming up on the anniversary of my other yorkies passing, so it just scares me even more. I have these crying fits at work and in a retail setting they just dont go over very well. I really want to thank you guys for this website and the information....and please just pray for my little baby. I just hope I can find out what's wrong and make her better. |

Praying For You And Your Little One! Hugs Bleus Mommy Welcome To Yt! |
Praying for your baby. She is at the best place right now to get her better. I know it is so devastating to have them sick and away from us. Whenever my Yorkies have been kept at the vets or er vets they tell me that they spend most of their time being held by the staff. WHen Dixie was in for her all day testing the specialist said her feet never touched the ground and no one got any work done that day. So they do give them loving for you, |
I was just checking to see if there are any updates. |
Oh I am so sorry.. I will pray for Lexi!! Please keep us updated.. and Welcome to YorkieTalk! |
My mom did get to go see her yesterday. She was yippy and playing, so that makes me feel somewhat better. She is getting the bile acid test. They did the second part this morning at 6, so it is a day turn around to get the results. We did talk to the breeder and they do have a health guarantee, they will refund me the money or replace the puppy ( which I told them I am not concerned about), I do not want another one, I just want Lexie to be healthy. She will be at the 24 hour vet for awhile now, but at least she seems to be getting a little more stable. I will definitely keep you posted, esp. when we get the results back. The prayers are a godsend, thank you!! |
Praying for little Lexie...Let us know the results when you get them... |
Okay, they rushed the bile acid tests because I found out she had a rough night last night. They are normal, so they said they have about 90% ruled out the liver shunt. The only problem is she does not seem to want to eat. She is getting dextrose constantly, and she is mostly being force fed, but her sugars will still fall. They are wondering if she does not have enough reserve to fall back on because she is so little and did not eat for the first few days we got her. They are going to try and wean off a little on the dextrose to see if her sugars hold. Had anyway had this happen, possible no shunt, but the sugars being off and not really wanting to eat? |
That's good news about the Liver shunt and hopefully they can get her stabilized. Cali was very similar and Cesars was the only food I could get her to eat. Getting her to eat was a full time job at the beginning. Now I can't get her to stop/ I will keep you in my prayers. |
I wish I knew what to tell you. I will continue to pray for her and for you. May she stabilize soon. |
Aw, poor little girl, sounds like she is having a rough time. That is great news that her bile acids are normal. Is there any way she can go back to the breeder's to stay with her mom longer? Perhaps she just wasn't ready to leave them yet. I would try to find a food she really likes even if it isn't a good food, getting her to eat is the most important and if she really likes the food she will want to eat rather than being forced something she doesn't like. I would try the Cesars. A lot of dogs seem to really like the taste. Keep us updated on how things go. |
It sounds like to me that you have a tiny that is a picky eater and has the stress of being in a new home...this combination equals hypoglycemia....my little Delilah was like this when I first brought her home. Once your baby gets settled in and you find something that she will eat consistently (was raw in Delilah's case) she will put on some weight and put this phase behind her. Good luck. |
just checking in to see how your baby is doing today. |
Update-saw Lexie today Well, I was feeling better last night. She is at er vet still getting syringed fed every 4 hours and getting dextrose drip at 7.5%. Her sugars were holding stable, so they were dropping to 5%. They held good for about awhile, but have slowly starting coming back down again. Basically the vets are stumped. Physically everything appears okay. They only shunt they think could be a microscopic one, but I would have to take her to a specialist clinic or UGA vet school for the scintiography ( or some test that sounds like that). They just started treatment for coccidia, b/c they said sometimes they can have a longer incubation period and make not always show up on initial tests. I am praying to God that is what it is and the treatment will help. Otherwise, I am at a crossroads...I will fight tooth and nail for Lexie, but at this point I don't know where to turn. Has anyone had a case like this where there is persistent dropping in sugar without shunt? Anything else we need to look at. I went and saw her today. She is just the sweetest baby, giving me kisses, wanting to cuddle, even with the little dextrose pump in her. I am not holding it together very well...and am just looking anywhere I can to find the answer. |

First of all, welcome to YorkieTalk. I am almost your neighbor -- I live in Rome. If you haven't already, I would take your little one for a complete vet check. If you are in need of a fantastic vet -- Dr. Amy. She has a yorkie and the practice serves a great number of Yorkies, both pets and show dogs. The practice has one of their vets on call 24/7 and they don't try to take you to the cleaners with vet bills. I have always found them to be compassionate and reasonably priced - even with after hours emergencies..... If you would like their information, please send me a pm..... |
God bless your baby I'm sending prays for you and Lexi. So sorry you are having this rough start. |
Update not good I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. I am so happy I got to see Lexie this afternoon.......but at about 530, I got a call from the er vet that she went into cardiac arrest and my new little baby is gone. They said it was probably something congenital because her blood sugar would drop even with constant dextrose drips...the only thing that gives me any solace is the fact that I loved her so much in such a short period of time. I am just not doing well....I miss her so much.....but I really appreciate everyone for listening and your advice. The hurt is just really overwhelming right now..... Jessica |
