Just for informative purposes let me tell you that the last time Bandit was hospitalized with HGE the Vet told me Purina One is the best dog food aorund.
I fed my Yorkie Purina One from the time it came on the market until the time she passed away. She was never sick at all either.Same with her Sister.
When I got these new special breeder Yorkies they recomended Eukanuba and then Roayal Canin, so I switched to those. Now I have been giving all o of mine Royal Canin but I am about to try switching back to Purina One. I felt guilty thinking it was not a designer dog food since some breeders say don't buy supermarket dog foods....Hmmmm . So what do you think about that ?

StewiesMom 12-14-2005 07:34 AM

I don't feed Purina One because it has a ton of corn (two kinds in the first three ingredients - makes up most of the food), brewer's rice, by-products and because of the preservatives.

I wouldn't consider the human-grade dog foods to be "designer". I consider them to be better for my dog. I feed Chicken Soup and it's not expensive at all. I'd rather pay a couple more dollars for a bag and get something that I feel is a great food.

It is important to read the ingredient label. Brewer's rice is low-quality small fragments left when the kernels of rice are separated. Corn is a known allergen for dogs. Corn gluten meal is a cheap protein source. Poultry by-product meal is parts of the carcasses of slaughtered poultry from turkeys, ducks, geese, buzzards, etc. It is a low quality inconsistent ingredient that has NO standard. Animal digest is heated broth from unspecified animals that can be obtained from any animal source so there is no control over the quality or contamination. There are a lot of dog foods on the market do not have negative ingredients; they're not that expensive compared to Purina One or Science Diet or Eukanuba and can be found at any feed store.

Ingredients of the Purina ONE Beef and Rice:

Beef, brewers rice, whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, oat meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), whole grain wheat, fish meal, natural flavors, defluorinated phosphate, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, salt, choline chloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, copper sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

I feed Miko Royal Canin Prescription Hepatic diet...I have to feed him this because of his liver shunt, but he actually loves it. Before we found out he had a liver shunt, and before we put him on this diet, he was a finicky eater and didn't seem to like to eat very much. Now he eats as much as he's supposed to with no problems :)

I have felt guilty about it ever since, as no one ever mentions P1 in the food discussions, and I thought I was being a bad momma. But my theory is if you can get your puppy to even EAT, that's half the battle. And if they enjoy their food and thrive on it, you're doing OK. So OK, I am steeling myself for the bad news... What's wrong with Purina One?

There is NOTHING wrong with Purina ONE or ProPlan. I have been using this food for several years now. It is a great well rounded food with no preservatives. All of my Yorkies love it. I use the Lamb and Rice because the Chicken and Rice has a higher content of "wheat". I have tried almost ALL the other foods on the list plus Science Diet too. Over time one or the other of my Yorkies developed a problem with the other foods. i.e. sensetive stomach, upset stomach, itchy skin, chewing feet, yeast ear infections, bad coats (growth and shine), loose stools, soft stools, etc and the very worst.......bad blood tests at their annual well checkup. This was the worst. I was feeding Royal Canin Yorkie 28. Two of my Yorkies had such awful blood values we thought they had livershunt!! When I removed the Royal Canin the blood tests went back to normal. Royal Canin will grow coat like crazy and will put weigh on a Yorkie, but the fat content is too high for long term use. IMHO If you are feeding Royal Canin please get an anuual CBC blood panel for your Yorkie. My experience with Royal Canin is NOT unique there are others who have had the same results.

I have had excellent results from Purina ONE Lamb and Rice or Proplan Lamb and Rice. Never ever had a sick Yorkie. And no digestive problems AT ALL. This was not the case with many of the other foods mentioned. Trust me I have tried ALL of them. Everyone's gotta do what they think best for their dog. But I can tell ya I have SENIORS that are still running around and playing like puppies. My vet also says the Purina ONE is an excellent food. What's the old saying "if it ain't broke" well it ain't broke so I will not be changing a thing around here. LOL Just my experience and opinion.

Stormy 12-14-2005 08:51 AM

[B]I totally agree with you. The "better" dog foods were not around years ago. Only Science Diet purchased from the vets and we called that "smelly poop food" lol it was unbearable.
I have been using Royal Canin for 2 years now just for the reasons you pointed out here.
Now I am having all this digestive problems with my babies and my Vet tells me to feed them the Purina One. I love this Forum....you breeders sure do seem to know more then the Vets do about Yorkies that should not be classified in with all other dogs because they are different. Very difficult to find a vet that knows the difference and treats them in a different manner.
Thank you for posting all of this information.

OH Boy...this makes decision making so difficult. I am feeling the same way and thinking about going back to the Purina One, I too have tried them all, but then when I read the post on here from YorkieLuv I agreed with her analysis of the ingredients. I never once had a digestive problem with either of two other Yorkies that lived for 14 years each and lived on Purina One from when it first came out,. I am having so many of these episodes with my dogs now and keep thinking it may be the richness of the Royal Canin but i do not know what to do. They are never all well enough to even try a gradual food switch. It is not about the money, I don't care the cost of the food but opinions are so diverse and hard to decide which to use when it is an issue of health not taste or finicky eaters. My first Yorkie never ate dog food. He hated Purina...the chunks and that was about the only dry food around at that time. He lived to be 17 1/1 years old and never once saw a vet for anything but routine shots and checkups. I cooked him a plain hamburger every day of his life. Now I would never give one of my dogs beef, although I do give them plain cooked chicken. I am at my wits end over this digestive problem and the dehydration that accompanies it. I so apprecate all of your information, I just wish I knew how to sort it out better and do the right thing for the dogs.

sabrinasmom 12-14-2005 12:13 PM

Natural Balance is the ONLY food Sabrina will eat unless literally spoon fed. She does great on it, though I'm having to cut her back - she's getting older and gaining too much weight. Pro Plan for puppies (Purina) is what my new vet forced on me for my new baby girl. He says it's the best of the "have it everywhere, all the time" foods for her and it will keep me from having to switch around. All this other stuff sounds wonderful - but we don't have pet stores in small towns and really hard to get ahold of and keep on hand, so I'm going for plain for now if she does well on it.

I am a Chicken Soup feeder.....And I feed him this b/c it was reccommened to me.

Ladies, Just like we find different foods appealing so do dogs. What might be right for 1 dog might be totally wrong for another.. As I have said in th past post, I feed all three of mine Purina 1 and I have to say the first three ingridents are: lamb, brewers rice and oatmeal. (Brewers rice is just broken pieces of rice, that they won't seel for humans)

Yorkieluv 12-14-2005 02:41 PM

My Miko's vet is excellent, and he recommended this food for him...Since my baby has been on his veterinary prescription Royal Canin hepatic diet, he has not had any problems. This food has lower % of protein, increased amount of zinc, and the right amt. of everything that his body needs.

michiko 12-14-2005 04:42 PM

I feed Guinness BLUE... because that is what his owner feeds him. I think petsmart trainer feeds her own dog BLUE so my friend decided with BLUE.
