This is a general comment not directed at you.

I don't understand some people who are not giving any pain meds at all. Imagine having your insides ripped out, you know it hurts! Just because dogs do not react to the pain as the same as humans does not mean they do not feel it. Spaying (and other things) are very serious and painful surgeries..
depends on the health of the dog but a dog with liver disease I prefer tramadol over nsaids and dogs on steroids should not ever get nsaids as it is a double whamy on the intestines and it jacked up my dogs intestines from one dose as she is on steroids and vet felt it was safe. My dog NEVER had intestinal issues - she had perfect poops and now for over a year I have dealt with intermittent diarrhea issues. I just double up on probiotics with a little pumpkin to knock it out. She had just had blood work, urine and fecal checked 3 days prior to hurting her leg and all were PERFECT. I wanted tramadol for her hurt leg as she has MVD and is on Temarilp and I knew it was not safe to give a dog an nsaid while on steroids. Well I TRUSTED the professional as we argued a bit and he said she would be safe - well it wasn't - from one dose she could not keep her food down for 30 DAYS. She vomitted her food up within minutes of eating as her intestinal track was so inflamed. I had to finally take her to internal medicine specialist as i was so frustrated and we soaked her food for 30 days so she could get it down and then slowly started adding back the hard food in small amts to ease her back o her regular diet. It was a total NIGHTMARE and she has never been the same since

So dogs with liver disease, IBD, and on steroids SHOULD NOT GET NSAIDS as you are just asking for trouble

Narcotics like tramadol are much safer for the above as they give pain relief - They do not have anti-inflammatory agent though but if your dog is on steroids then the steroids are anti-inflammatory.

OH and we will NEVER go to this vet again - I only went to him bc he had a digital xray machine to xray her leg. My friend recommended him as she goes to him. I gave him her whole file and went over everything with him but he still felt safe that my dog with mvd and my dog on steroids could tolerate it WRONG.

yeah when my dex was neutered they sent me home with NO PAIN MEDS. I was stupid then and he had 10 teeth pulled. I was up all night as again i was STUPID and did not know about ER VET facilities so at 7 am i was all fired up at the vets office saying my dog has been in pain and i just laid on the floor all night petting him trying to keep him comfortable. They gave him a pain shot that morning and some pain pills to take home and i NEVER EVER went back to this vet as i was so upset as i was a new pet owner as dex was my first dog and I TRUSTED THEM.

I have had some wonderful experiences and have had to switch vets quite a few times and is why I have chose to make this my part time job to educate myself on this profession so I never feel helpless again.

This is why i help others as not everyone knows all this stuff as I sure as heck didn't so why i always assume a pet owner knows nothing and try to educate them from there as so many are out there the same as I was not knowing all these things.

Oh and dd was spay and dex was neutered with no blood work prior to that i am aware of and dd has mvd. I did not know you are suppose to have blood and urine checked prior to anesthesia

What Veterinarians Should Tell Clients About Pain Control and Their Pets

it looks like nsaids are approved by fda for use in cats so it is used off label like ivermectin is used off label in dogs for demodex

more info from fda

Treating Pain in Your Dog

every pet owner should read the above before giving nsaids to your dogs

medical insert for metacam for cats

http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AnimalV.../UCM050397.pdf

I always thought tramadol was used for pain in cats but I will check with my client who is a cat doctor only as she specializes in cats.

Yea well I will not be giving it to any more cats. Luckily I never use the whole prescription. I only have given it for about a day or 2 and as soon as they start acting like they are comfortable I don't give anymore and what I mean by acting comfortable is when they feel good enough to jump up on the furniture again. I've only had one cat come home with the patch since Rimadyl has been on the market.

Torbutrol, but Joey had an allergic reaction to it and with each dose became more hyper, so we discontinued it on the vets advice.

Kobe hasn't had the neuter surgery yet but thanks to YT and posts like these I'm doing all kinds of reading and research so I know what to ask and expect when I go in there with him in a few weeks.

yeah narcotics can speed up respiratory system which happened to my maltese as she was breathing alot faster so I called dentist and he said it was normal. She had this for her teeth extractions. Dee Dee had tramadol for her teeth extractions

All this info about side effects of meds given to our animals by our vet are an eye opener for me.

I never thought to question meds being given by the vet.

I am glad this info has been brought to everyone attention. So, we can decide what they want to give or what not to give.

Pixie was given Tramadol liquid for 3-5 days after her recent LP surgery. She also was given Metacam once a day for 7-14 days. She is 9 days post surgery and I think I am going to stop the Metacam today. She doesn't seem to be in much pain and she seems really lethargic. The info from the surgeon gave a lot of warnings about side effects and lethargic was one of them. While I want her to be quiet and comfortable she seems almost depressed to me. I will see how she does without it.
