anyways here is my story.. When I got Tucker he was on puppy chow, he was constantly itching and just seemed generally uncomfortable. Within the first week of having him and after reading several posts on this forum about good food /bad food, I slowly started putting him and my other dogs on a better food. I choose chicken soup puppy for Tuck and Taste of the wild for my other dogs. Tuck didnt like the chicken soup much so I slowly put him on totw. During this time his itching didnt change much and he ended up with a nasty ear infection. After being on TOTW for 2 ish months, he was gaining well and the itching seemed to be localized to just his sides however I did notice that his coat felt very dry, not fluffy or soft like a puppy's coat should and he had terrible gas issues that effected his inguinal hernia that he would scream out in pain. I took him to the vets last saturday for his checkup and she told me that he should be on a puppy food, that she didnt trust TOTW cause it was a new food, if I insisted on keeping him on it to at least mix it with puppy food. So I did. I went to my local feed store and they now carry some wellness products, dogswell and of course Science diet. Since they didnt carry wellness in the puppy food and dogswell was als I bought SD puppy ( I know gasp). I also bought some canned dogswell to mix with the puppy food. I slowly adjusted his food and just after 2 days of the SD and a small amount of the dogswell canned (it is a grain free food) his gas issues were gone, he had more energy and by the end of the this week is coat was starting to feel soft again and his itching has just about stopped. Now I dont know if its the puppy food or the combination of the 2 brands but Im glad that I switched over. I know that SD is considered a garbage food however it has made Tuck feel better and to me that is all that matters. I have also switched my other dogs off TOTW and onto dogswell. They seem more satisfied on the dogswell. I will probably switch Tuck over to the dogswell dry in a few months but for now he is staying on the SD.

That's great that your baby is better! That's all that counts! Just like you said, he's your dog and that's all that matters! Everyone's dog is different and some dogs have reactions to certain foods. Certain food works better with certain dogs, whether it be SD, Purina or Wellness. As long as your dog is happy & healthy, that's all that matters! I'm glad you posted!

I'm so happy for you too!! I just switched Snick to Merrick's grainless from their Puppy Plate and he has gone from pooping x2 a day to x4!! Eww!! I know I need to wait it out, but if it cont, he is going back to his puppy food as well. There is so much to learn...I wonder how it will be when I have human babies when I am this OCD about my furbaby! Oh my!!

The dreaded food question!

I have spent hours...days....weeks researching and trying to decide! It seems I considered every food out there at one time or another

Chloe came to me on Science Diet puppy and Sydney was on Beneful. After I found this site I started researching and trying to find something healthy and something I could find locally.

We switched them to Blue Buffalo then onto Blue Buffalo Wilderness. They did O.K. on it but they didn't eat with much vigor and they both hated the lifesource bits and left them all over the floor , so we switched.

We decided to try Natures Variety. I mix NV kibble ( we started with Chicken flavor) and a little canned ( venison to start) in the a.m. and then they just get kibble for the rest of the day. We want to do the rotation diet so we plan on switching flavors each new bag of food but will wait till we see how the do on it.

So far they love it !

They follow me around the kitchen in the morning excited to get their food and they have never done that ! They lick the bowl clean

I am hoping this works out for us and our search will be over...only time will tell , but so far they are happy so I am happy

I've tried everything else... believe me

but settled on Artemis Fresh Mix

.. and evangers canned food once a week.

Tucker had the same issue while on TOTW.. when he first started on it he was only going 2 to 3 times a day but not long before I switch he was going up to 7 times a day

and so was my toy poodle and in the 2 years that I had her she has never pooped that much in one day. The food was obviously not working for them however I didnt relize untill I made the switch, I figured because it was considered a high quality food it was normal

. I agree 100 percent with you have to feed your pets what works for THEM wether its homecooked or commercial grocery store brands.

So, I've tried the NV raw and apparently Cassi liked it for 2 days and then stopped eating it. On top of that she started to get these wet burps and a few days later started to vomit. I had to take her to the vet and they gave her some antibiotics. She's doing much better now.

As of now, I'm feeding her a mix of the following:

1-Canidae All Life Stages Formula (this is what she was initially eating)
2- Bill Jac Puppy Food (this is what Ori was eating and she absolutely loved it and won't touch her food unless I mix some of this into her food)
3-Natural Balance Small Bites L.I.D. Potato & Duck Dry Dog Food (I started to add a little bit of this, b/c I've noticed that she will pick out the Canidae kibble and drop it on the floor, this way if I mix this food with Bill Jac Puppy Food she really can't pick out kibbles)
4-Wellness wet food (she loves the duck and sweet potato)

I've also purchased a bag of Solid Gold as well, b/c initially Cassi wouldn't touch the dry kibble sample that Natural Balance sent me. However, when I opened a new bag of NB smaller kibble, to start Ori on it...she started to eat it also.

I hope to tabulate all the responses one of these days and post it. Unfortunately the Poll only allows you to include 10 choices.

Things have changed drastically for me, so need to update my response. I now feed Innova EVO chicken and also use EVO 95% Venison to mix in for morning feedings.

My three are on Orijen, we go from the regular formula to the fish one. (Petey can't tolerate grain) They have fresh fruits and Veggies daily! Right now they are on a Mango, papaya, and Pineapple kick.
