What made you get a Yorkie? For me it was the size. After I had my first one, I got my next one because they are great companions and the best dog ever! Just wondering why others were drawn to the Yorkshire Terrier :) |
Everything I wanted and more I found on a Yorkie, I started looking for a dog that did not shed, that we could take with us when we go away, and if he needed to stay,a small dog that I could leave at my parents and would be easy for them to take care of,intelligent, loving, the lap dog part, and the kisses overload came as an bonus, need I go on? |
I've always wanted a Yorkie. I love their size and they're ALL just soo beautiful! |
My wife did all the research. She wanted a little dog that didn't shed, and she spent hours on the Internet. I didn't want anything to do with a little dog, but I had to admit the picture she came up with of a Yorkie pup melted my heart. Now that I'm a Yorkie fanatic, though, the reason I would get another one is the convenience factor. They are athletic, feisty and smart, which is everything I would want in a big dog. But their size fits our lifestyle. We can take them with on vacations. They can get up on the couch and bed without hogging the whole thing. And there's something to be said about small poops. |
I used to 'study' dog breeds when I was in grade school...I was a fenatic about dogs and horses. I must admit that I fell head over heels for the Yorkie when I saw the first picture of one...then while watching Green Acres I saw Lisa carrying her little one around and that was it! When I saw it move with that long coat I was hooked...I didn't need to know anything else. I've had a Yorkie in my home throughout my adult life. |

what a GREAT question!!!! i can't wait to see all the answers.... Well i wanted a cat (i know. horrible start to the story). My parents are ALWAYS at work in the summer and they were never home... and my bf at the time lived in Guelph and i only saw him on the weekend (guelph is an hour away from here). so i wanted company... an orange cat... well my mom said no... but i knew i wnated SOMETHING... and friends of ours have a yorkie and my mom really liked him (she doens't like dogs). I was close to a "maybe" with her because they don't shed, she could come with us when we travel, and i could take her to guelph with me on the weekends (never happend.. we broke up) So i researched and found one.. and up to the day we drove to get her.. my mom didn't want her.... the second she saw her... she was in love :D i was too! |
It was the size for me because I was going to college and had a small place, now I've fallen in love with the breed. |
Well to be honest, I just wanted a little "person" to love. My mom calls it "baby fever". Well needless to say I know that I wasn't in a position to have a human baby, because I had just ended a very serious relationship. I had never had a pet before and my best friend had always had a dog before going to college. The more she talked about her relationship with her past pets, the more I thought that a puppy was just what I needed. In my pet research, I saw a picture of a yorkie puppy. I went out and bought "Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies" and read it cover to cover the same night. I had definitely been in a funk since the breakup and Courtney was so happy to see me excited again that she told me to find a yorkie puppy and she would get one for me. So I was on a search for the PERFECT little princess. And on a trip to see a little female puppy, I saw Jamie and just knew that he was my little "person"... bright and loving and inquisitive and cuddly and fiesty .... My mom says that he squelches my baby fever cause he's just like a tiny version of me in a furry package. Now I just can't wait to get him a little sister and I'll have my own little furfamily, no man needed. LOL! |
I can relate with all these responses  Keep em coming! |
It was 1970 and I loved long hair (still do) I wanted an Afgan but my parents said I had to get a small dog, since we had a sheltie already. So I decided on a Yorkie. I have been hooked ever since. I love their long coats and personalities. |
It was love at the first sight for me! |
I couldn't decide between a Yorkie and a Maltese, I love them both. I found YorkieTalk, and it gave me lots of great information on finding a good breeder. So at that point, I was on a search for the best breeder I could find, one that lived up to what I thought may be impossible standards. I couldn't find a Maltese breeder of the caliber of Joey's breeder, I'm not saying that there are none in Arizona, but I was disappointed with all I interviewed. I think if you choose to get a pure bred instead of a rescue, it really is important to reward only those breeders who are doing their very best to ensure only healthy dogs are born, and who are really trying to "improve" the breed, and not just breeding for money. So for me it was find a good breeder first, then choose the dog. |
For me was their size, but also the affection they give. I am sooooooooo happy I got them, they are my precious babies |
Surprisingly, my husband was the one that wanted a yorkie. I asked him what he wanted for his birthday and he said a dog. I reminded him that we didn't have the room for a big dog since his favorite breed is a german shepard. He said that he wanted a yorkie. My first reaction was "You want a WHAT?!" because at the time, my perception of a yorkie was a little 1-2 lb "teacup". He said that he had puppy sat for two when he was a teenager and he fell in love with the breed then. We went on our search and found Chip... and now we have two. I'd like to get one more, but we can't. |
