| Too Harsh/Rude or Cultural Lately there have been many posts in threads that have been called extremely harsh/rude by some and cultural by others. It will be interesting to get a consesnus from YTers about whether these posts are cultural or a lack of good internet manners. This will be a public poll, so if you have an opinion on this issue, speak up and be seen. It will be very interesting to see who posts. There will only be two choices, because this is a black/white issue without grey inbetween. Comments are always welcome but hummmm I wonder if it would be possible to keep comments (even negative ones) civil and polite. |

| I will make the first comment - In America we have the RIGHT of Freedom of Speech - with rights come responsibilities. Even though I have the RIGHT to say/type smeting, it might not be the right thing to say/type. I am responsible for my words - spoken and typed and the effect that they have on others. |

| We all have the freedom to speak our minds, but we also bear the responsibility of our words and actions.

| I think with every right comes the burden of responsibility..regardless what it is. We may have the right to bear arms..but... I am very careful with my wording here and the direction of my thoughts because it is a social gathering if you will. I would never want to hurt anyone's feelings. When you are typing/reading and you can't hear someones tone or see body movement it is easy to misunderstand someone's thought intent. However, rude comments or culturally directed comments are just obvious. Its out there and once it is said..it is said. We are a socially polite bunch for the most part. Rarely do you see any cursing compared to what we probably say around the house at time I havent seen any blatent racial or cultural comments..ok maybe one..lol But yes, I believe we have to own up to what we say |

| Oooo a civil ethics discussion on YT! Chicken soup for the political science major's soul... LOL! I agree that rights come with responsibilities. It was best explained to me like this. Let's say we are all in high school and had all gotten BRAND new red Corvette's to drive on the first day of school. So now its 3:15 and the bell just rang to let us all out of class and we RUN to get in our new cars. Well no matter whether or not we have the RIGHT to drive those cars, there has to be mutual respect and courtesy for any of us to get out of the parking lot. Otherwise it would just be a jumbled mess and alot of people could get hurt in the process. My momma always says "If you wouldn't say it to someone that had a gun to your head, then you probably shouldn't say it at all." A little graphic... but it gets point across. Cause if I think about that before I say something, it really makes me think... Is it REALLY worth it to upset this person?!? Smiley faces or not, sometimes members here are incredibly rude. Even in real life, just because somebody is smiling doesn't mean they're being nice. There is ALWAYS a respectful way to say what needs to be said. If not then just be a big tattle tale and report them to admin! I know that's how I always stayed out of trouble when I was little...

| Latley I too have read some posts that have been very critical, rude, and hurtful to other members, more so new members coming here for help and advice. They should not have to leave here feeling more confused and alone than before they came. |

I have typed SO MANY posts and ended up deleteing them as i re-read i try and see if what i am saying can be taken the wrong way and if it can i delete it. Of course I dont want to hurt anyone intentionally. I will say this I have read many posts and shook my head at the ways it can be taken. SOme just dont think of others when they say stuff. I think we all know who those are eventually and avoid reading or posting to those people. There are a few that i will just skip right over their posts and go to the next being I dont wanna get upset or angry. I think the longer your a member and get to know others you realize who's intentions are what and just go from there! And if you see a member you think you know and read a post by them that strikes you wrong...Just ask them PRIVATELY what it meant and you'll prolly find it wasnt what you thought and all is well. Just a lil benefit of the doubt goes a long way!! If I ever say anything that seems odd or off the wall for me Id appreciate a PM saying "What the hell is wrong with you?????" and maybe a Are you serious???? lol Im appraochable and I NEVER mean to hurt feelings at all!!!!!!

Me too! Cause if I say something that could hurt someone's feelings, I'd appreciate if my friends called me on it.

| I agree 100%. PLEASE PLEASE pm me and let me know that I've over-stepped the boundaries of civility. There are times when I am very passionate about a subject, but I try very hard to "attack issues" and not the people behind the post. |

| Thank you to all who have posted so far I would like to thank everyone who has posted/voted so far. It is amazing how many people here at YT believe that we should be held accountable for the words we say/type and how they affect others. I am going to try very hard to thank each person who votes/posts in this thread, no matter how you vote or the content of your post. I will do that by pm so that I don't bog down the very important view points of our members. |

| Me three! Please let me know if any of my posts ever come across as rude or abrasive, because if it does it is unintentional. I would never post rudely on purpose. I think we all need to be positive posters.
