What's happening to your exposure? Too light or too dark? And how are you fading out the background? Ideally, you want to shoot on a low aperature setting to have the background fade out. So if the picture is coming out too light, choose a faster shutter speed. If too dark, lower shutter speed.

okay....ill go first! We are learning studio lighting and portrait photography in my class! Last night we had a model come to class and here are a few of the shots i took...she is a beautiful girl!!

Wow Jeanne: gorgeous photos and model. Just wow!

My daughter was working on a project (art student) and needed some photos, so we went out and took these in the cold. We had a lot of fun doing this. The last one is my environmental portrait if I understand what that is.

I like the portrait idea. An idea for future topics is Black and White.

Great photos! Love this theme, here are a couple that I think fit the theme of environmental portrait

This one is Nappy hanging on his favorite couch, I took it in B&W then added the sepia tone in.:

I looked at the definition of environmental photos...I think this one fits. This is Copper in his natural surroundings...ok the backyard...and what he likes to do there!

Best picture I've seen yet! It definitely catches your babies personality, in his environment, and it's ADORABLE! Do you mind if I save a copy? Sometimes I need something super cute to get me through the work day.

Agreed! Love that shot. It tells you so much more about the dog seeing him playing in his own element.

I had a prime opportunity last weekend when I went to the ski resort to watch Thomas take a lesson. These were taken when he was resting up between runs. I was thinking "OK, this is it, environmental portrait!" But I don't think I quite got it. The background is so important, and I didn't know how to manage it. You have to include enough to give it a sense of place without making it distracting. Mine either don't have enough background, or what's there is distracting. I like the idea of having the snow reflected in his goggles, but you can see me in them taking the picture! There's definitely an art to it I haven't come close to mastering. Still fun trying

Thanks to all for the nice comments on my picture of Copper. It cracks me up to watch him try and get that tangerine off the tree. He seems to enjoy it too.
