Anything Pickled! I love pickles of all sorts. Haha when I was typing sorts I almost typed sour! Just found a new brand of pickles at the swap meet. Hooper's pickles. Their chili version is so good. They are packed with whole chilis and lots and lots of dill. They do sell them at Mother's Markets and Whole Foods too, so I won't have to trek back down to the swap meet everytime I run out. I just also tried this delish kim chi at our Flame Broiler. I usually don't care for kim chi bc it isn't sour enough for my taste, but this one was great! Sour, salty, spicy, crunchy and cold! :) One of my favorite chinese pickled things are preserved mustard greens. They also have preserved cucumbers but they are heavy on the soy sauce and sugar, so if you've never had them before, they aren't like regular pickles, but so good with congee (rice porridge). I also find it funny they call it "preserved" and not "pickled" as I'm sure most of these jars of veggies stay on the shelf of the chinese market for ages! Preserved like mummified? LOL What are your favorite pickled things? Recipes too if you got 'em!:) |
I love this recipe from Alton Brown. I cut the sugar in half, after many tests. I just like it better that way. Also I don't use champagne vinegar, it's just too expensive. Kinda Sorta Sours Recipe : Alton Brown : Food Network |
I love my grandma home canned dill pickles..I don't have her recipe, but I know she uses lots of dill, garlic and I think alum and of course apple cider vinegar, but don't quote me on the spices..lol They are very crunchy and spicy. I also love pickled okra and always made it when I use to have a garden. I don't use a recipe, but found this one which sounds almost identical to how I made mine. I used apple cider vinegar though. Does the okra still have the gooeyness inside after it's been pickled? |
I'm a pickled fan myself. Love anything pickled I have ever tasted! |
How about pickled pig's feet? We used to have them in gallon jars when I was a kid, but I don't remember much about them. |
Never had pickled pigs feet. I would like to try it. I like pig skin and pig fat. LOL |
LIME Pickle!! My absolute fave! It's a must have with my curry dishes :D I have made lime pickle myself in the past but it wasn't as good as in the Indian restaurants. Pataks brand isn't bad ;) |
pickles is one of the few things i dont like. Theres only one kind i like, or should i say i love them ... i love half sour pickles |

I have never heard of half sour pickles. Are they just not very sour at all?? |

The only pickled things I love are pickles...dill pickles. :p Especially fried dill pickles - if they are done right! |

I would hate a salty coating I think - the ones I make are loaded down with garlic powder and cayenne pepper. Gives them a nice little kick! |

I love all things pickled! :D The best fried pickles i've actually tasted was from the Hooter's here. LOL Gotta be fresh cause they wilt from the heat pretty fast. I also like the Gardeniera(sp?) pickled veggies esp. the cauliflower. :D My kids LOVE pickles, kim chee, and all that sort. I make cucumber kim chee that my kids love. They always ask me to make it. Best made with Japan Cucumbers though. I love sour kim chee too. There is this Korean place here that uses it in their Bi Bim Cook Soo. I love it! My sil used to work there and would only order it if the Kim chee was just right. ;) |

Ha!! I saw this post and had to share! There is a jewish deli here in Birmingham AL that serves pickled green tomatoes. I was so afraid to try them even though DH told me that they were good....Well, I finally tried them and they are fantastic! I know it sounds strange, but they are wonderful! I am hooked!! :p |
I love pickled beets |

Pat dill pickles dry. You can use dill chips or spears. Spears give more pickle taste, chips give more breading taste. Set aside. Combine seasoned bread crumbs, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and garlic powder in bowl. I don't measure anything, but you can adjust spices to taste. I tend to load mine down with cayenne because I love spicy. :) In separate bowl, break a couple of eggs and wisk with fork. Coat pickle with egg, then in bread crumb mixture. Then coat again with egg and bread crumb mixture so the pickles are extra coated. Heat oil on stove and fry coated pickles until nice and crispy and goldeny brown and perfect. So easy and so delicious! |
Thanks for the recipe! :) Sounds simple enough. I've never double battered before. When you go in for the 2nd egg dip, it doesn't wash away the bread crumbs from the first dip? Also do you just pan fry them or deep fry them? |
Quote:
I would say no. I bread/tempura a lot of the things I fry and I always double batter. :D I think deep fry is the way to go. |

More of a deep fry. I put an inch or two of oil in a deep skillet and fry away! |
OMG how good will these be with Alton Brown's homemade pickle recipe!!! |
I really dont like sour things but I do like pickles, dill and bread and butter |
